This thread is in continuation of Dev Dahiya's thread Chhola tau. (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11793) of yesterday. Before proceeding further, please click the link above. This new thread is being created as the topic of discussion of "Chhola tau" has completely changed and is now confined to Buffalo breeds of Jatland.
Agar koi gora American (or European) iss mheinss (buffalo) per koi thesis likh key koi chotti-si kitaab chaap de tey ye MDU wale usko sir-pey baitha lenge aur usko honorary doctorate bhi de-denghe.
Par agar hum sab ye discussion aapas mein karaan saan tey kuchh apne hi doosre member isney padh key yeh sochte honge ki aachhe baawle sein – paddhe-likhe aur topic chedd rakhya se mheinss ka !!
Tey bhaiyo eib sunno : Ek Tau aapni mheinss ko “hari karwawann” le-gya. Wah mheinss addiyal kisam ki thi. Uskey ek mukka maar key bolya: dyoh…dyoh…dyoh – terre sussre ki !
Aar pher woh tau jhote aagey hath jodd key bolya: “Arey bhai pyare jhote, maharbani kar, teri tey zara-si laagey-gi: mhare ghar mein doodh ho-jyaaga”.
Aagey Angrezi mein :
Buffalo is an important asset for any Indian farmer, not just for Jats – it not only provides milk, but is also a source of income – a cash crop. It is learnt that recently one trader from Hyderabad paid Rs. 1 lakh for a ‘Murra’ buffalo of Haryana.
Now a true story which I had read in “India Today”, around 1980.
In a village in Hissar district, a kisan bought a milch (dudharoo) buffalo which, on arrival at his house, was welcomed by kisan’s wife with traditional rituals: placing a “teeka” on her forehead and offering a sweet diet of boiled grain mixed with gudd. While preparing this diet for the new buffalo in a big brass-basin (huge ‘pateela’), the lady forgot that she had hidden her 8-tola gold-chain in that ‘pateela’. The buffalo ate that golden chain too with the sweet-mix.
The lady later realized the mistake and started crying. Now, the whole village, rather the whole area knew that the golden buffalo was hiding the precious metal inside her. Then the nightmare started for the whole family. The buffalo could neither be sold to a third party, nor could it be kept lose, fearing that the “Kaali mai” may be stolen by the thieves. Its gober (dung) too became a sought-after commodity for the village ladies who are habitual of collecting it from other houses – reason being that some day, the golden chain may come out with dung. But it did not happen. Tight security was provided to the kaali maharani and its dung was checked on a daily basis, even when it was outside the house.
X-ray reports confirmed that the chain was still inside her belly. Some villagers suggested that as a last option, the animal should be sold to a butcher who would take out the yellow metal. But the buffalo was giving a lot of milk and Chaudhary said that he would never allow the animal to be butchered even after it stops giving milk.
The golden buffalo, which had provided an average 12-13 KG of milk on a daily basis, died after 8 years. Its belly was cut with a knife and the golden chain was recovered intact.

The rising importance of buffalo
The importance of buffalo is clearly viewed in our Jatland area. When a quarrel takes place between two parties, someone says, “Manney ke teri mheinss khol li”.
In ancient times, “Pashudhan” (the asset of livestock) and agriculture were considered the most pious professions. So the famous saying generated: “Uttam kheti, madhyam vyaapar, neech chaakri” (The best profession is agriculture, medium one is trading and the worst is to become a servant or to work for others). “Kheti” also includes keeping livestock (mainly cows). In ancient times, the cow became the symbol of pride for its master and naturally acquired the status of “mother cow”. We need not elaborate this point as all of us know what honour this animal “cow” has in our society – both religious and economic. Swami Dayanand’s booklet “Gokarunanidhi” explains various tenets of this animal.
Now, the point is why, now-a-days, buffalo has overpowered the cow. The reasons are obvious. New technologies in agricultural field have reduced the status of cow as its male offspring (calf) is no longer being used by farmers in many states, including in Punjab and Haryana (tractors are common now). Cow is sensitive, wise, shy and a kind-hearted animal - it has a human touch and keeps close relationship with the members of the household. If an owner of a cow wants to get rid of it (for any reasons), it is not so simple. One owner gave his cow to one of his relatives whose village was 20 kilometres away. But after a few days, the wise animal came back to the owner – walking all the way. The story by Munshi Premchand “Do Bailon ki katha” in which two bullocks of a kisan came back to him, is not a fiction but a hard reality. If someone has not read this story, it is available on the Internet. Click the following link:
http://www.webdunia.com/literature/story/0107/11/1010711063_1.htm
So, in modern times, a domestic cow becomes a liability for the owner, the sole reason why so many stray cows are seen on city roads. The current laws restrict its sale or transportation to a remote place. - For example, the female cow cannot be exported outside the borders of many States. On the other hand, buffalo does not contain a religious or “holy” touch and can be disposed of at ease. It is neither shy nor wise, nor kind-hearted. This suits the Kisan and the resale value of buffalo has gone up in recent years. Ek Tau ki mheinss addiyal thi : tau ney uskey do latth marrey aar bolya: de dyo sussri ney kassaiyan key”. Gai(cow) key maar key dikhaao – ulti laat maregi !
In milk production too, the buffalo has surpassed the cow. A Cow is best to be kept if there are grazing grounds (pasteurs) available. Unfortunately, in today’s villages the forest area for grazing the cattle has reduced due to pressure on land, increase in human population and higher land prices. Villagers naturally prefer to keep the buffalo which remains happy inside the household boundary. Its milk is thick enough (unlike cow’s) – fit for doodhwalas who are notorious for adding water to milk. Buffalo’s milk also contains more fats and more quantity of ‘ghee’ can be acquired after churning. Mheinss is also the natural choice of dairy owners due to heavy demand of milk in big cities.
If you torture the cow, it has the capacity to deprive you of its milk (“Toppa bi nah de – jo sey usney bi sahaar jyaagi”). But – “mheinss ko do latth maaro aur kaadh lyo dhaar”. !!
Eib bataao – mheinss raakhann mey faydaa sey ak iss ‘dhandhee’ (gaawdee - cow) mey ? Ye gamman ke tau baawlle konya !

Do bhai nyaare ho-gey. Sab cheezanh ka batwaara ho-gya par do ka nah huya : ek tey unki mheinss aar doosra ek kaamball (blanket). Faisla yo huya ak ek bhai (Chotta) din mey kaambal istemaal kareyga aur doosra raat-ney. Aur mheinss ka faisla bera sey ke huya? – aadhi mheinss ek ki aur aadhi doosre ki. Mheinss ka aage-ka hissa chotte key baantey aaya ar paachhla badde ke.

Buffalo’s calf (“Katrra”) – a humble, meek and neglected animal
A kaatra is perhaps the most innocent, harmless and “soodha” domestic animal ever seen in our land. This poor creature is tortured for no fault of its own, is abused constantly and subject to funny jokes. It is also denied of its due share of diet. Even his mother’s milk, which is naturally his property, is snatched from him by buffalo-owners. Any mother (including buffalo) produces milk for her child only. We human beings consume it after denying the due share which should have been given to mother’s offspring.
A very common notion among villagers is that a Katraa is lazy and slow (unlike its counterpart Baachhrra - cow’s calf) “kaan todd key lottyaa rahey sey”. Often, a young buffalo-calf’s belly is infested with 6-9 inch parasite - a long white worm and to remove that, a special liquid has to be injected through the throat with the help of a bamboo pipe called Naall. Moreover, due to lack of proper sanitation and surrounded by the bad smell of buffalo’s urine and gober, the child (Katraa) is often the easy target of flies and other tiny insects, especially ‘Dherre” and “Cheechadd”. But when it goes out in the pond and takes a bath in the pond (Johadd), its laziness is replaced with a remarkable ‘furti’.
In most cases (almost 90% ), when a Katrra acquires the age of 1 year or so, it is sold to a dealer who generally sends it to a slaughter-house. Buffalo-owner wants to keep it only till its mother’s capacity to produce milk. The lucky ones which survive because of their well-built body structure, are trained either for pulling the heavily loaded carts (jhotta-buggi) or for ploughing the fields. The luckiest one which is really strong-bodied (‘tagraa’), is retained to lead its life as a Jhotta ! The female calf (Katia), however, is considered an asset for obvious reasons. Its resale value is higher and if she is fed well and grown into a well-built young buffalo (Jhotti), it is in high demand from dairy-owners after its first pregnancy (Khaar-ki Jhotti).
* Ghar mey jhagraa tha. Boodha tau chhohryaan tein bolya: Arey meri tey iss ghar mein itnni-bi kadar konyaan jitni mheinssyaan mein katrre ki !!”
* Aar wah kahaawat bi sunni hogi: “Naya-naya dukandaar aur mheinss ka katrra: jey yeh donoo 3 saal jee jyann to kissey-ke bi bas-ke konyaan”. (3 saal mein naya dukandaar to seth ho jawey sey aur katrra jhotta bann-jya sey).
Footnote:
Buffaloes constitute 45 % of the total livestock population of Haryana state and they contribute 80.5 % of the total milk production. About one lakh 'Murrah' buffaloes are exported every year to other States and abroad. For details, please the Haryana Government’s web-page:

Jhotta - the buffalo-bull
In ancient Indian mythology, Jhotta is ‘Yamrajvahan’ (Yamraj ki sawaari) and an animal of the liking for ‘Asurs’ or non-Aryans. The Pouranik devil “Mahishassur”, as the name suggests, must have been a ‘super-jhotta’.
This animal is generally the common property of a small village but for a big village with a large cultivable area, there should be one or two more. It is a common saying : Ek gaam mey do jhotte nahin rah sakte. Generally the ‘jhotta’ status is to be given to a male calf whose mother was the best in milk production and size of body. This animal does not stay at one place, though it remains within the village territory – free to graze standing crops. To avoid this, villagers keep a common fund for it which is utilised to feed him so that the damage to crops is minimum. Normally, ‘Danna’ or crushed gram is provided to the animal from such a fund.
Normally, a jhotta is arrogant and has the habit of grazing freely in the fields. If interrupted, sometimes it attacks the human beings too. Stories have been heard where a jhotta crossed over to another village’s territory and kisans from that village hurt the animal and then, elders from both the villages were at daggers drawn with each other -police had to intervene to calm the both sides.
In “Krishi Expo” (January 2000) in Delhi, a Jafferabadi jhotta from Gujarat weighing about 1600 kgs was adjudged as the “best male animal” of the Show but in the buffalo-bull category itself, a Murra Jhotta of Rohtak district had won the “Best Bull Prize”.
An incident:
Some 15 years back, a ‘Bateu’ went to his sasural in a village in Gurgaon district, 3-4 days prior to Holi festival. There, the girls (his ‘Salli’ and her friends) tied him tightly with the charpai and then, that charpai was tied to the tail of a jhotta (with a long rope) - aur jhotte key marye do latth !!
The animal kept on running through the village fields and the poor bateu lost his life. This incident led to a big uproar and the whole village gained the status of a ‘notorious’ category and the villagers found themselves in a difficulty while arranging marriages for their daughters. The matter was reportedly sorted out after many years in a special sitting of the area panchayat.

.Johadd - a village water-pond
There is a popular saying “Jis-ney aantyaa johadd, uska aa-gya oudd” (one who fills up the pond with clay, his days are numbered). Many villages in the Delhi zone have filled the old ponds with clay due to high land prices. Now, these villages are facing acute water shortage as the ground water level has gone to a dangerous low level. Our ancestors had developed this simple technique to store the rain water. A johadd not only consumed the rain water of the housing areas of a village, it also provided valuable raw material in the shape of a strong clay (“Cheekni Maati”) which was used for making bricks for construction of mud houses. This stored water was also used for livestock and was the source for drinking water which filtered into the water-wells around a johadd so that in case of low rainfall in a particular year, at least availability of ground water could be guaranteed. Even modern research shows that rain water harvesting is the best way to solve the drinking water crisis. In south India, the ponds are also used for irrigation.
A village pond is the favourite place for domestic buffalo (which is normally called ‘water bufallo’ by Europeans or Americans). In the wild, water buffalo are found in tropical and subtropical forests as well as wet grasslands. They are considered terrestrial but are heavily dependent on water and spend a majority of time wallowing in rivers or mud holes. The buffalo is a good swimmer in deep water but even small ponds or ditches (‘khaddhe’) with a low quantity of water and some mud are the likings of buffaloes and its calves. The mud wrapped on the buffalo’s body gives it relief from sun, mosquitoes, flies and other tiny insects. The village johadd is best for a bath by this animal and also by village boys and youth.
Some johadds have acquired a ‘holy’ status and waters of some johadds are believed to have some medicinal value. One such johadd is said to be in Chharaa village where a holy bath, according to belief, removes the jaundice.
