He should have said, " hey doorman ! you are wrong you should have asked, 'three' !

Exactly. While I was writing my post above, Vijay's post came up first. I noticed it afterwards. Just see - mine and Vijay's posts have a difference of just one minute.

Yes, the correct answer is : 3

The first time, the doorman man said : Twelve ( this word has 6 letters)
The second time, the doorman said : six (this word has 3 letters)
The third time, the doorman said : Ten (this also has 3 letters)

The man thought that he should divide the figure by 2. His first two attempts were just a coincidence. The third time he said '5' which was not correct. The word 'ten' also has 3 letters. Hence, the answer is '3'.
