Tips for use of Hindi on your computer

I have been successfully using Hindi language on this site, though on a trial basis. The best example of this is my thread दादा बस्तीराम की जुबान से (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13073) (Time Pass Forum) and also Dev Dahiya’s thread Ghar Ke Bheddi (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13203)in the same forum, where I have presented his few poems in Hindi. However, some of you who do not have WindowsXP PCs, may be facing difficulty in watching Devanagri script on Jatland.

In India, there are a few sets of Devanagari software programmes developed successfully by various programmers/ firms. Most notable is “Leap Office” and “Aksara XP”. But these programmes do not fit into web browsers and sending communications via e-mail etc.

Very few users know that WindowsXP Operating System contains Devanagri fonts which are useful for watching and posting Hindi/ Sanskrit/ Marathi texts on the Internet. I am explaining below the method how to extract the fonts and how interested members can form Hindi letters (though not as efficiently as one can do using a traditional Hindi keyboard of ‘Godrej’ settings).

In WindowsXP :

Step 1

- Press ‘Start’ and then go to ‘Control Panel’

- In ‘Control Panel’ double-click the icon “Regional and Language Options”. A separate window will appear.

- Check option “Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)”. Press “Apply” and then “OK”.

Fonts will be extracted.

Step 2

- Go to “Control Panel” – “Regional and Language Options”. A tiny window titled “Text Services and Input Languages” will appear. Press “Languages” and then press button “Details”. A mini window will appear.

- Click “Advanced” and check the box “Extend support of advanced text services to all programs”. Then “Apply”

- After this step, again (in the same mini window), press “settings”.

- In a box, you will find the word “Keyboard”. Click it and press “Add”. A mini window “Add Input Language” will appear.

- Under Keyboard layout/IME, press ‘down’ arrow button. A list of languages will appear.

- Choose ‘Hindi traditional’ or ‘Devanagari Inscript’. Then ‘OK’ and ‘Apply’. Either on ‘Desktop’ or in ‘Taskbar’, a small icon of languages will be created.

- Close all windows.

To test whether Hindi fonts have been extracted, go to ‘Control Panel’ and then ‘Fonts’ folder. There, find out whether font file ‘Mangal’ exists or not.

To test Hindi typing, open ‘wordpad’ programme. Click the ‘language’ button in taskbar and choose the language ‘Hindi traditional’ or ‘Devanagari Inscript’ as the case may be.

Start typing from letter 1-2-3-4-5-6- and q-w-e-r-t-y-u-i-o-p etc: Following text will appear:

In the second step, put your left-hand thumb on the ‘Shift’ key and start typing with a left hand finger in the same method, starting from ‘1”. The following text will appear:

ऍ ॅ ्र र् ज्ञ त्र क्ष श्र ( ) ः ऋ औ ऐ आ ई ऊ भ ङ घ ध झ ढ ञ ऑ ओ ए अ इ उ फ ऱ ख थ छ ठ ँ ण ळ श ष । य़

So, it will not be a Hindi keyboard as we have our standard ‘Godrej’ in India. Now, it is up to you to make out a few Hindi words by “cut & paste” method on the Wordpad or MS-Word. For this, one should have a good knowledge of Devanagri alphanets, half-forms, and dots etc. A Sanskrit-knowing person would be more perfect in this job as his knowledge of Devanagari letter-formatting is naturally more accurate.

Users of Window98/ME/2000 etc. :

As explained above, after extracting Hindi fonts on a WindowsXP PC, open the “Control Panel” and “Fonts” folder. From there, copy the font file ‘Mangal’ on a floppy disk or any other external device. It is a short file (140 KB).

Then, copy this file to other computer (with OP Windows98 etc.) in Control Panel/Fonts. Restart the computer. In this way, you would be able to watch Hindi text at least on Jatland site.

There is considerable enthusiasm among members to post something in Hindi. Some have made sincere efforts in the last few days. I have been successfully using Hindi in my posts. There are many posts by me which are only in Hindi, the latest being my short play Kissa-e Maham-Chaubissi (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13768) . [Here is the summary of some of the software programmes which can be downloaded for use of Hindi. Some programmes have been suggested by various members, I am compiling them at one place for easy reference, quoting my own experience with those.

(i) The website of Department of Information Technology provides free software for use of Hindi on various Windows based programmes. If one downloads this on PC, then various menus in MS-Words etc. would be converted in Hindi and file names would be able to be saved in Hindi. I have tested it but later uninstalled from the machine because of some irritants which occur. But those who are IT experts, can well solve these petty irritants. (ii) The following site of ‘Tavultesoft’ provides freeware software by which the keyboard can be used to type Hindi in Wordpad and then pasted on MS-Word etc. This system is called “Transliteration’ i.e. you type Hindi in Roman script and Hindi text will appear in Devanagari script. I am using this programme now-a-days. It is fully compatible, using ‘Mangal’ font, which is part of Windows XP system. Just try – wonderful. Here is the link:

Do you have I386 folder in your C or D drive? specify the path to that folder while installing the fonts.

Deswalji, thats good but relation between english keys board and devnagri is not straightforward... eg. a does represent hindi "a"... its hard to memorize this relation to type... I remember that Shusha has more direct relan.. so I have saved shusha in windows/fonts folder but and I can write in wrod file... but I don't know how do I use shusha in Jatland becuz that fornt doesn't appear in the list of languages in control/regional language option/languages/details/add procedure...

This requires a little practice. I am using the keyboard method after downloading from the following site:

After downloading the above programme, an icon is created in the task bar (right bottom of your monitor) from where language can be chosen. After choosing "Hindi Keyboard Beta" if you type your name 'vinoda', it will appear विनोद in Devanagri. The text should be typed in 'Wordpad' and then copied in MS word or in the browser.

I found baraha program very simple and cute. Its also good for emails and posts in devnagri. You just have to install in your comp and write message in the wondow in program then just copy devnagri message and paste it wherever you want. the correspondence between english keyboard and hindi letter is very direct and simple to remember. E.g. I just wrote a message

बिलकुल आता है भाई । पहले 'EDIT' बटन दबाइये और उसके बाद 'GO ADVANCED' । फिर जैसे मर्जी संशोधित करो अपने लिखे हुए को ।

एक तरीका और भी है - यदि text ज्यादा लम्बा न हो तो 'Braha Direct' द्वारा ब्राउजर पर सीधा भी टाइप किया जा सकता है ।

Deshwal ji, I did that lekin us mein bhi font size ka option nahi aata... jasse mane screen shot ka photu attach kiya hai... esma kahan se font size change karoon?... aut different fonts, like ariel, aur color kasse edit karon?... There is simple technique. Go to the following URL address

You get a hindi unicode type writer. Type on it you desire and copy paste where you need hindi matter.

The popularity of ‘Mangal’ font is proved by the fact that the largest Hindi daily “Jagran” (http://www.jagran.com (http://www.jagran.com/) ) which earlier used its own font, has switched over to ‘Mangal’. Hindi service of BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/hindi/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/hindi/)) is already using this font.

Hindi is now widely used in Jatland forums, including Wiki pages. Both Haryanavi and Rajasthani dictionary are now bilingual – so is Jat Gotras (http://www.jatland.com/home/Jat_Gotras) page. More material would be added in Haryanavi Folk Lore (http://www.jatland.com/home/Haryanavi_Folk_Lore) and Haryanavi Language Idioms and Phrases (http://www.jatland.com/home/Haryanavi_Language_Idioms_and_Phrases).

Those of you who have earlier versions of windows (Win98, ME, Win2000 etc.) may download Mangal font so that you may enjoy Hindi posts at Jatland. There are several sites for free download – see earlier posts in this thread. Windows XP already contains this font and let us see what is in store when new version of Windows ‘Vista’ captures PCs in 2007.

Text can be saved in MS word also, by copy-paste, using 'Barahapad' - can be pasted on Jatland posts also. There is another icon under "Baraha" called 'Barahadirect', through which text can be typed directly on the browser on Jatland posts. But I would not advise this until you are adapted well to the keyboard.

For good practice on keyboard: Open 'Barahapad'. You will see a ? sign on the extreme right on the top (menu bar). Click it and then open "Hindi Transliteration system'. Take a print of this page and keep it with you. It would be useful for typing difficult words like gÉ Á Xû G I M×ü
etc.

What can be done to work in Hindi in Linux. Though there is an option of selecting regional language as Hindi, the display is not proper. Also
the web browsers (Mozilla & Mozilla firefox) on linux (redhat fedora core 2), do not display Hindi fonts properly at least on my machine. Even in window, mozilla firefox doesn't displays the hindi fonts though I have Installed the true type fonts on the machine. Can any body help???

A lot of us use linux as our primary desktop and face no problems usually. As for mozilla, you need CTL enabled builds. Just do a search on google if your distribution does not do it by default.

Although in modern distributions, it should work out of the box, I am not sure about fedora because I moved to debian and then ubuntu and have never repented. If you don't have a cd/dvd for a recent distribution, you can request free ubuntu cds to be delivered to you from their website. www.ubuntu.com .

Dear Jatlanders,

Kindly use MS Internet Explorer while browsing text in Hindi here on Jatland or anywhere.....I found out a irritating bug in Firefox!!

Firfox browser shows correct matras wrong!!! so you might have come across that hindi text is shown with wrong matras....so better use Internet Explorer while browsing text in hindi!!!

If I type on a web type writer or Jatland Wiki Hindi symbols there is no problem in copy paste but it takes a lot of time to type there. Please find the way how to go about in above so that a lot of time can be saved.

I pasted the following text on a MS Word document, highlighted it and chose font ‘KrutiPad 100’.

Though you will be able to paste Hindi text at Jatland (as I have done), it may not be visible to other users (though it will be visible on your computer). For this sole reason, I use 'Mangal' font which is pre-installed in WinXP system. Recently, some on-line Hindi newspapers have switched over to Mangal font - notably 'Daily Jagran' which earlier used to work on its own 'Jagran' font.

But there is one advantage. After downloading KrutiDev fonts, one can type in MS Word by selecting "KrutiPad 010" etc. The keyboard will be converted into Devnagri typewriter (such as used by 'Godrej' typewriters). Its use on the Web, however, is problematic due to non-compatibility with popular OPs like WinXP etc. and related browzers like IE 6.0 etc.

यूनिकोड का चमत्कार

पहले अंग्रेजी का वर्चस्व विश्व भर में उतना नहीं फैला था जितना कि इंटरनेट के माध्यम से रातों-रात फैल गया है। UNESCO के अनुसार आज इंटरनेट पर उपलब्ध सूचनाओं का लगभग 82 प्रतिशत भाग अंग्रेजी या रोमन आधारित भाषाओं में है, सिर्फ 18 प्रतिशत भाग अन्य भाषाओं में है और भारतीय भाषाओं में तो इसका भाग एक प्रतिशत से भी कम है ।

आखिर ऐसी कौन-सी दिक्कतें है जिनके कारण इंटरनेट पर हिंदी और भारतीय भाषाओं में पर्याप्त सूचनाएं उपलब्ध नहीं है? आखिर क्या है यह यूनिकोड? क्या यह अलादीन का चिराग है, जिसके उपयोग से हिंदी और भारतीय भाषाओं में सूचनाएं अनायास ही इंटरनेट पर आ जाएंगी?

इस समय हिंदी में इंटरनेट पर उपलब्ध वेबसाइटों और ब्लागों को हम तीन श्रेणियों में विभाजित कर सकते है । सर्वप्रथम वे वेबसाइट, जिन्हे खोलने के लिए किसी फांट विशेष को डाउनलोड करना पड़ता है, जिसका परिणाम यह होता है कि तकनीकी जानकारी न रखने वाला आम उपयोगकर्ता उसका उपयोग नहीं कर पाता और फिर हर वेबसाइट के लिए अलग फांट डाउनलोड करना भी कम झंझट का काम नहीं है । इसके अलावा ऐसी वेबसाइट में उपलब्ध सूचनाओं को सर्च के माध्यम से खोजा भी नहीं जा सकता । भारत सरकार की अधिकांश वेबसाइट इसी श्रेणी की है । दूसरी वेबसाइट वे है जिनके लिए dynamic font का उपयोग किया जाता है । डायनामिक फांट HTML डिजाइन का एक नया रूप है, जिसकी सहायता से किसी भी फांट में निर्मित वेबसाइट की विषयवस्तु को उपयोगकर्ता फांट विशेष को डाउनलोड किए बिना ही देख और पढ़ सकता है । हिंदी के अधिकांश समाचार पत्र इसी श्रेणी के अंतर्गत आते है, लेकिन डायनामिक फांट में निर्मित वेबसाइट को न तो आप word आदि में save कर सकते है और न ही इसमें संकलित विषय वस्तु को सर्च के माध्यम से खोजा जा सकता है। इससे यह स्पष्ट है कि इंटरनेट पर इन दोनों प्रकार की वेबसाइटों का कोई अस्तित्व ही नहीं है और इस प्रकार वेबसाइट बनाने का मूल उद्देश्य ही नष्ट हो जाता है।

यह विडंबना है कि आज भी कंप्यूटर पर भारतीय भाषाओं के अधिकांश उपयोगकर्ता सिस्टम और फांट की असंगतता के कारण ई-मेल, चैट, टेंपलेट, आटो टेक्स्ट, स्पेल चेक जैसे कंप्यूटर के सामान्य अनुप्रयोगों का भी उपयोग करने में हिचकिचाते है । यही कारण है कि कंप्यूटर पर हिंदी के उपयोगकर्ता आज भी शब्द संसाधन तक ही सीमित है । शब्द संसाधन के अंतर्गत भी वे कंप्यूटर पर हिंदी में टाइप करने मात्र को ही हिंदी कंप्यूटिंग समझने लगते है । बहुत ही कम उपयोगकर्ता ऐसे है जो हिंदी और अन्य भारतीय भाषाओं में पावर पाइंट, एक्सेल और एक्सेस आदि का उपयोग करते है या इंटरनेट पर हिंदी में खोज जैसी सुविधाओं का उपयोग करते हैं । इसका मुख्य कारण अब तक तो यही था कि भारतीय भाषाओं में विभिन्न सिस्टमों के आर-पार कोई समान मानक प्रचलित नहीं था । वैश्वीकरण के इस युग में विविध प्रकार के प्लेटफार्म, फांट और सिस्टम के बावजूद आवश्यकता एक ऐसी मानक कोडिंग प्रणाली की थी जिसके अंतर्गत विश्व की सभी भाषाएं सह-अस्तित्व की भावना के साथ रह सकें । इन समस्याओं का एकमात्र समाधान है- यूनिकोड । हिंदी के व्यापक प्रचार-प्रसार में यूनिकोड की सुविधा क्रांतिकारी परिवर्तन ला सकती है।

आज सभी लिखित भाषाओं के लिए यूनिकोड नामक विश्वव्यापी कोड का उपयोग माइक्रोसाफ्ट, आईबीएम, लाइनेक्स, ओरेकल जैसी विश्व की लगभग सभी कंप्यूटर कंपनियों द्वारा किया जा रहा है । यह कोडिंग सिस्टम फांट मुक्त, प्लेटफार्म मुक्त और ब्राउजर मुक्त है । यूनिकोड, प्रत्येक अक्षर के लिए एक विशेष नंबर प्रदान करता है, चाहे कोई भी प्लैटफॉर्म हो, चाहे कोई भी प्रोग्राम हो, चाहे कोई भी भाषा हो । विंडोज 2000 या उससे ऊपर के सभी कंप्यूटर यूनिकोड support करते है इसलिए यूनिकोड आधारित फांट का उपयोग करने से न केवल हिंदी को आज विश्व की उन्नत भाषाओं के समकक्ष रखा जा सकता है,बल्कि उसकी सहायता से निर्मित वेबसाइट में खोज आदि अधुनातन सुविधाएं भी सहजता से उपलब्ध हो सकती है । पिछले कुछ समय से बड़े हिंदी समाचार पत्र और हिंदी पोर्टल यूनिकोड के महत्व को समझने लगे है और उन्होंने अपनी वेबसाइट के लिए यूनिकोड का प्रयोग शुरू कर दिया है । कुछ नमूने यह हैं :

Its good efforts to use hindi. Swami Omanad used to say that use hindi in chemistry symbols and nomenclature also. If hindi is used then many nomenclature and formulae become simpler. English has only 26 alphabets but hindi has 44. Hindi ki matrayen vagerah mil ke ek achha permutation/combination deti hain chemistry me. Even more powerful is sanskrit in computer usage being the most systematic langauge of the world. But as we are not all that aware of sanskrit so second option is hindi.

NEW YORK: The Roman alphabet will lose some of its dominance of the Internet beginning Monday when the organization overseeing website addresses starts testing 11 new languages for domain names.

In a long-awaited break from its devotion to the Roman alphabet, ICANN — the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers — announced on Thursday that it will test registering website domain names in Arabic, Persian, Russian, Hindi, Greek, Korean, Hebrew, Japanese, Tamil, and both simplified and traditional Chinese. “This will be one of the biggest changes to the Internet since it was created,” said ICAAN president and chief executive Paul Twomey.

People creating web addresses with non-Roman lettering will be routed to a wiki page and required to use “.test” instead of commonly used domain name endings such as .com or .net. The results of the test will determine whether ICANN sanctions using languages written in alphabets other than English for complete domain names. Presently, website creators can use other language characters before the dots in website addresses, but endings must be in English characters such as .com or .net.

Search Engine' एक ऐसी तकनीक है जिससे इंटरनेट पर जानकारी को खोजा जा सकता है, चाहे वह किसी भी भाषा में हो । सर्च इंजिन में एक वाक्य या कुछ शब्द लिखने होते हैं जिनको कि खोजा जाए । आजकल google का सर्च काफी लोकप्रिय है ।

अब सवाल यह उठता है कि क्या हिन्दी में भी सर्च की जा सकती है । जबाब है - हां, बिल्कुल इसी तरह जैसे कि लैटिन अक्षरों में ! शर्त यही है कि आपको जो भी खोजना या 'सर्च' करना है, उसे हिन्दी में ही लिखकर 'google search' बटन को दबाना है । ऐसा करो कि जाटलैंड की कोई भी पोस्ट खोलो जो हिन्दी में है । उसके एक वाक्य को अपने mouse से highlight करके कापी करके गूगल के बाक्स में डालो और सर्च करो । आपको जाटलैंड के URL का option मिल जायेगा ।

प्रश्न - क्या कम्प्यूटर भाषा को समझता है ?

उत्तर - बिल्कुल नहीं - कोई भी मशीन भाषा को नहीं समझती । कम्प्यूटर एक विशेष नम्बर या कोड को पहचानता है, जिसे आम तौर पर 'binary code' कहते हैं । छोटी सी सूचना को bit कहा जाता है और आठ bit को मिलाकर एक byte बनता है । कंप्यूटर प्रोग्राम एक सूचना को data में परिवर्तित करता है जो कि दुबारा एक 'सूचना' में बदलता है । यदि हम 'A' टाइप करते हैं तो CPU में एक आठ bit का byte बनता है : 01000001 और चित्रपट (monitor) पर 'A' दिखाई पड़ता है । हिन्दी या किसी दूसरी भाषायें भी इसी तरह के कोड से बनाई जाती हैं जिन्हें कम्प्यूटर समझता है । इसलिये कंप्यूटर हमारी भाषा को नहीं समझता, केवल कुछ कोड हैं जिनके द्वारा अक्षर स्क्रीन पर नजर आते हैं ।

प्रश्न - क्या कभी भविष्य में ऐसा हो सकता है कि एक कंप्यूटर भी हमारी भाषा को ऐसे ही समझने लगे जैसे आदमी का दिमाग होता है ?

उत्तर - डा. अब्दुल कलाम का कहना तो यही है कि ऐसा कभी नहीं हो सकता । कारण ? मनुष्य का दिमाग लाखों-करोड़ों साल की प्रक्रिया से प्रकृति द्वारा बनाया गया है जिससे कोई भी कंप्यूटर आगे नहीं निकल सकता क्योंकि यह तो सिर्फ हमारे ही द्वारा बनाई गई एक मशीन है ।

प्रश्न - तो फिर 'voice recognition' सिस्टम में क्यों एक कंप्यूटर हमारी भाषा को पहचानता है - जैसा हम बोलते हैं, वैसे ही यह टाइप करता है ?

उत्तर - फिर वही बात लागू होती है - यह सिर्फ एक आवाज (sound) को पहचानता है, भाषा को नहीं । एक प्रोग्राम द्वारा यह आवाज को पहचानकर, कुछ code द्वारा लिखे हुए अक्षर स्क्रीन पर ले आता है, इससे ज्यादा कुछ नहीं । और लिखे हुए अक्षर भाषा नहीं होते । भाषा बहुत गहरी होती है - जो लोग पढ़-लिख नहीं सकते वे भी भाषा को समझते और बोलते हैं । इसलिये कंप्यूटर और भाषा का कोई संबन्ध नहीं !

है न अजीब पर सच ! इसीलिये सर्च इंजिन से किसी भी भाषा में लिखे हुए पेज इंटरनेट पर खोजे जा सकते हैं - हिन्दी में भी !!

एक समस्या जरूर है - वह है हिन्दी का एक मानकीकृत (standardised) की-बोर्ड । रोमन के माध्यम से हिन्दी में टाइप जरूर हो रहा है, जैसा कि ऊपर वाली कई पोस्ट में दर्शाया गया है । अंगरेज़ी का एक मानक की-बोर्ड है । भारतीय भाषाओं में यह अराजकता के स्तर पर है । फ़ॉन्ट की मानकीकरण के साथ-साथ हिंदी सहित अन्य भारतीय भाषाओं के की-बोर्ड का भी मानकीकरण किया जा सकता है । इस संदर्भ में यह कहना अप्रासंगिक नहीं होगा - 1999 में करुणानिधि सरकार ने तमिल भाषा के की-बोर्ड का मानकीकरण किया था । हिंदी के लिए ऐसा कर गुजरना असंभव नही होगा । आखिर इससे पहले टाइपराइटर के की-बोर्ड का मानकीकरण तो हो ही चुका है । आखिर कंप्यूटर उसी का तो विस्तार है । अखिल भारतीय स्तर पर ऐसा हो सका तो भारत में आई टी का फैलाव कई गुना बढ़ सकता है । ज़्यादातर लोग इसलिए रोमन का इस्तेमाल करते हैं, क्योंकि या तो उनके मोबाइल और कम्प्यूटरों में देवनागरी में लिखने की सुविधा नहीं है या फिर उन्हें इसके बारे में पर्याप्त जानकारी नहीं है । रोमन में ई-मेल वगैरह लिखने वाले लोग खुद रोमन में पढ़ने की अपेक्षा देवनागरी में लिखा पढ़ने में ज़्यादा सहज हैं । इसका मतलब यह है कि रोमन का इस्तेमाल मजबूरी के कारण ज़्यादा होता है, बजाय कि अपनी पसंद से करने के ।

जो जागरूक हैं वे इंटरनेट से लाभान्वित हो रहे हैं और इस काम को आगे बढ़ाने में सहयोग कर रहे हैं । लेकिन बावजूद इसके अभी हिन्दी जगत में कंप्यूटर को लेकर इंटरनेट को लेकर और कुल मिलाकर तकनीक को लेकर ही, एक असमंजस का, संशय, सन्देह का और एक हद तक अस्वीकार का भाव विद्यमान है । ऐसे लोगों को लगता है कि तकनीक उनकी सृजनशीलता को नष्ट कर देगी । वे इससे दूरी बनाये रखने में और यह कहने में कि मुझे न तो कंप्यूटर आता है और न ही मैं इसे सीखना चाहता हूं, गर्व महसूस करते हैं । वैसे, माइक्रोसाफ्ट ने काफी पहले से कंप्यूटर का हिन्दीकरण कर रखा है । वर्ड, एक्सपी सब कुछ हिन्दी मे सुलभ है । सबसे बड़े सर्च इंजन गूगल पर हिन्दी में खोज की जा सकती है, हिन्दी में ई मेल भेजी और प्राप्त की जा सकती है और हिन्दी लिखने-पढ़ने में अनेक साफ्टवेयर्स की मदद ली जा सकती है । फिर भी, कंप्यूटर और इंटरनेट अभी हमारी आदत में शुमार नहीं हुए हैं । अगर हम इनका प्रयोग करते भी हैं तो अंग्रेजी की मार्फत, जबकि हिन्दी के माध्यम से भी किया जा सकता है ।

हिंदी में स्कैनिंग की त्रुटिरहित तकनीक ''ओ सी आर'' विकसित कर ली जाए तो इंटरनेट पर हिंदी में उपलब्ध अथाह सामग्री और भविष्य में लिखे जाने वाले वाङमय को लाने की गति तेज हो सकती है । ओ सी आर वह तकनीक है जिसमें प्रकाशित साहित्य स्कैनर से अपने आप कंप्यूटर पर टाइप होने लगता है यानी कि टेक्स्ट में तब्दील हो जाता है । इसी तरह से त्रुटिरहित फ़ॉन्ट परिवर्तकों को जनव्यापी बनाया जाना समय की माँग है । इंटरनेट के हिंदी युजर्स बढ़े, इसके लिए आवश्यक है कि हिंदी का मानक की-बोर्ड भी देश में लागू हो ।

जाट लैंड पर अब आप हिन्दी में आसानी से लिख सकते है. इसके लिए गूगल का यह यू आर एल खोलें

यह ओन लाइन काम करता है. आपको जो जाट लैंड पर लिखना है वह हिन्दी को गूगल के इस विंडो में रोमन में टाईप करें. प्रत्येक शब्द के बाद जब स्पेस देंगे तो गूगल इसको ट्रांस्लिटरेट करके हिन्दी में बदल देता है. कुछ शब्द अगर सही नहीं बने हैं तो आप उस शब्द पर कर्सर रखें तो आपको कई वैकल्पिक शब्द दिखेंगे. सही शब्द का चुनाव करें. फ़िर भी सही नहीं हुआ है तो चिंता न करें. जाट लैंड विकी का विंडो खोलें. उसके नीचे हिन्दी की अक्षरावाली दे रखी है. उससे शब्द को इन्सर्ट कर सही कर सकते हैं. यह काफी तेज गति से काम करता है. अब अंगरेजी से डरने की आवश्यकता नहीं है.

Windows interface in Hindi can be downloaded from this link. But beware, I am not advising this – even with English interface, there is no problem in using Hindi. Microsoft will check for “Genuine Microsoft Windows’ and most users in India use pirated copies which are cheap. Nevertheless, installing Hindi Interface Pack is not necessary.

Before using this you have to first downlaod MANGAL FONT..

I have one more problem:
I have recieved a soft copy of Technical Installation Mannual by my Japenese counterparts, they have translated it into Hindi using some tool, which has made the entire document a bit of tough sanskrit kind of hindi words...the font is KRUTI DEV...

Now i have found all the tools, which works on MANGAL font only..

though i have used mangal font inbetween Kruti dev font, but that looks a bit ODD...which finally my boss has approved, but still the font sizes are a bit different.

How can i synchronise both??

I request all JL techies to come up with some solution....

इंटरनेट पर गूगल जैसी लोकप्रिय सर्च इंजन के मुकाबले के लिए एक सर्च इंजन हाल में ही शुरू हुआ है, जरा आजमा कर देखें :

इसमें हिन्दी की-बोर्ड भी है जिसके द्वारा हिन्दी में टाइप किया जा सकता है, सो यह एक और आन-लाइन टूल जैसा है ।

UNICODE सिस्टम के आने के बाद फांट डाउनलोड आदि से मुक्ति मिल जायेगी - यह मैं ऊपर एक पोस्ट में लिख चुका हूं । यूनिकोड तकनीक का सबसे अधिक लाभ गैर-अंग्रेजी लिपि वाली भाषाओं को मिला है । आज हम यूनिकोड का उपयोग करके किसी भी भाषा में लिखे गए टेक्स्ट को दुनिया के किसी भी कंप्यूटर पर बिना कोई फॉण्ट इंस्टॉल किए देख सकते हैं । बस उस कंप्यूटर को यूनिकोड-संगत होना चाहिए । यूनिकोड-संगत कंप्यूटर दुनिया की हर भाषा से पहले ही परिचित होते हैं तथा इन्हें दर्शाने के लिए आवश्यक सेटिंग इसमें पहले से विद्यमान रहती है ।

इन भाषाओं में सभी प्रमुख भारतीय भाषाऍँ भी शामिल हैं । विंडोज एक्सपी, विंडोज विस्टा, मैक एक्स 10, रेड हैट लिनक्स आदि यूनिकोड-संगत ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टमों के कुछ उदाहरण हैं । विंडोज ने अपने 2000 संस्करण में पहली बार यूनिकोड सपोर्ट दिया था। इसका हाल ही में लॉन्च विस्टा संस्करण भारतीय भाषाओं के लिए भी पहली बार सपोर्ट लेकर आ रहा है । ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम के अलावा उपयोग किए जा रहे सॉफ्टवेयर का यूनिकोड-संगत होना भी आवश्यक है।

कंप्यूटर में डेटा इनपुट करने से लेकर इंटरनेट तक यूनिकोड तेजी से लोकिप्रय हो रहा है । आप कंप्यूटर पर यूनिकोड टेक्स्ट देखने और पढ़ने के अलावा उपयुक्त Input method editor का उपयोग करके यूनिकोड टेक्स्ट लिख भी सकते हैं । इसकी मदद से एक ही फाइल में फॉण्ट सेट किए बिना विभिन्न भाषाओं का टेक्स्ट लिखना भी संभव है ।

आजकल तो विभिन्न typeface वाले यूनिकोड फॉण्ट भी उपलब्ध हैं, जो आपके टेक्स्ट को सुंदरता प्रदान करते हैं। माइक्रोसॉफ्ट ऑफिस, स्टार ऑफिस तथा ओपन ऑफिस जैसे सुइट आजकल यूनिकोड-संगत हो गए हैं तथा आपको प्रतिदिन का हर कार्य यूनिकोड में निपटाने की सुविधा देते हैं । इनमें न सिर्फ आप अपनी भाषा में कार्य कर सकते हैं, बल्कि फाइल का नाम, mail-merge, हेडर-फुटर, कमेंट्स, सॉटिग, वर्तनी जाँच आदि भी अपनी भाषा में कर सकते हैं। ये सारी सुविधाऍँ अब तक केवल अंग्रेजी में ही उपलब्ध थीं ।

इसके अलावा इंटरनेट पर भी भाषाई वेबसाइटों में यूनिकोड अपनाने का कार्य तेजी से चल रहा है। नई भाषाई साइटें यूनिकोड में ही आ रही हैं तथा पुरानी साइटों में conversion का कार्य तेजी से चल रहा है इन वेबसाइटों को दुनिया में कहीं भी बिना कोई विशेष फॉण्ट डाउनलोड किए देखा जा सकता है। गूगल, याहू, एमएसएन, बीबीसी तो भारतीय भाषाओं में अपनी यूनिकोड आधारित वेबसाइटें लेकर आ भी चुके हैं ।

यूनिकोड में वेबसाइट बनाने का एक अन्य लाभ यह भी है कि गूगल तथा याहू जैसे सर्च इंजिनों द्वारा इन्हें खोजा जा सकता है, चाहे वह टेक्स्ट किसी भी भाषा का क्यों न हो । केवल उस भाषा में खोज टेक्स्ट लिखिए तथा इच्छित परिणाम आपके सामने होंगे । वेबसाइटों को अपना व्यवसाय तथा visibility बढ़ाने में यह महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है । True type font में बनने वाली भाषाई साइटों को यह सुविधा उपलब्ध नहीं है ।

आवश्यकताऍँ आजकल बाजार में मिलने वाले अधिकांश ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम तथा सॉफ्टवेयर यूनिकोड-संगत होते हैं। इन्हें यूनिकोड के साथ तुरंत उपयोग किया जा सकता है । यूनिकोड का लाभ वे लोग नहीं उठा पाऍँगे, जो पुराने कंप्यूटर सिस्टम जैसे 486, विंडोज-98 आदि का उपयोग कर रहे हैं । इस तकनीक का उपयोग करने के लिए उन्हें अपने हार्डवेयर अपग्रेड करवाने होंगे। यूनिकोड के साथ उपयोग करने के लिए कंप्यूटर को कम से कम P-4, 2 गीगाहर्ट्ज होना चाहिए तथा उसमें 40 जीबी हार्ड डिस्क व 256 MB RAM होना आवश्यक है ।
