Dear Linux/ C++ users,
I have just started writing programmes in C++ on a Linux plateform. I am very keen to get into graphics also soon. Please advise me of some good books / reading material which I can consult.
In next phase I wish to read the output data from certain equipments which have RS 232 serial ports and other COM ports. Some guidence on this also will be highly appreciated.

there are plenty of books out there but best thing to do will be to take some dummy project. It will be best for you to use some industry standrad tool like Borland® C++BuilderX™

Depends what graphics you wants to learn. If you wants to learn graphical user interface then you have to learn X11/Motif or go fo some general purpose GUI toolkit. For X11/Motif check this website out
http://www.rahul.net/kenton/xsites.html
it has lots of information about the GUI. If you are interested in doing non commercial project check out GTK+ at http://www.gtk.org/. I found it much more easier than X11 and Motif.
If by graphics you mean 3d graphics then you might have to learn Opengl. Just get Opengl RED book. There is no better book than that one.
let me know if you want more information

Thanks friends..its really heartening to see so many responses.
1. Harishankar Jat: Its really easy as Linux comes loaded with C++ and Fortran Compilers. Use emacs or Vi editor to edit your programs, G++ to compile and then run like u do on any operating system.
In fact writing and running C++ or Fortran is not the problem. My main proble is still how to call the Fortran subroutines from C++ programs. I have read lots of stuff on mixing the programmmes. but so far no success. Meanwhile I got involed in Matlab Programming and enjoying that a lot. For the moment C++ has taken back seat...
By the way friends temporarily I have moved to UK. I have joined my root profession of Medical Physics here at Clatterbridge Hospital in North West of England. This move has been just to freshen up my outdated knowledge. I intend to work here for 5 years and hopefully move back to India after that. I will keep travelling back and forth ofcourse every 3 months....anyone planing to vist this side can certainly be my guest..share my hostel and eat what i cook these days...
