PRE SEA TRAINING FOR MERCHANT NAVY DECK OFFICER CADET
1. Naval Maritime Academy is conducting Pre-Sea Training for Merchant Navy Deck Officer Cadets, first batch commencing 15 Jul 06. A total of 40 vacancies are available.
2. In pursuance of BSc Nautical Science degree from IGNOU and Certificate of Competency, 2nd Mate Foreign Going from DG Shipping, the total training period is split in 03 parts as under:-
(a) Pre Sea Training for 01 yr at NAMAC. This 01 yr period comprises semesters I & II of BSc Nautical Science IGNOU. NAMAC has advertised to conduct this 01 yr Pre Sea Training.
(b) 18 months sea time on a merchant vessel as a Deck Cadet.
(c) 04 months Competency Course for 2nd Mates Foreign Going from a recognized institute followed by examination (written & oral) conducted by DG Shipping. NAMAC does not conduct Competency Courses but plan to start it when our cadets complete their 18 months sea time.
3. It must be understood that NAMAC will conduct only the 1st yr (first two semesters) of BSc Nautical Sciences degree course of IGNOU. Subsequently, the sea time requirements followed by the competency course schedule does not form a part of Pre Sea Training and hence not the responsibility of NAMAC. NAMAC cannot assure the candidates of placement for sea service. However, on the basis of its good reputation in the industry, NAMAC will endeavor to invite major ship owners during the course of training, to sponsor candidates or select candidates for sea time.
4. Eligibility Condition
(a) 10 + 2 pass certificate or equivalent examination with not less than 60% in PCM and 50% in English. Age less than 20 yrs as on 01 Aug 06.
Or,
(b) BSc in Physics, Maths, Chemistry or Electronics with physics as an individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 55% marks in final year. Age less than 22 yrs as on 01 Aug 06.
Or,
(c) BE/BTech degree from IIT or from a college recognized by AICET. The candidate should have min. 50% marks in English language in 10/12th standard or in the degree course conducted by a recognized board or university. Age less than 24 yrs as on 01 Aug 06.
(d) Medical & Psychological fitness as per DG’s standards for sea services.
(e) Eye sight – Min 6/6 with normal color and night vision.
(f) Eligible candidate will undergo a written examination followed by an interview board selection process.
5. Fees for 01 yr Pre Sea Training at NAMAC is Rs. 1,80,000/- inclusive of boarding, loading, uniforms, textbooks & training aids
6. Expected remuneration .
A Merchant Navy deck cadet always pays for his Pre Sea Training unless sponsored by a shipping company. During his subsequent sea time, he is paid a stipend by the ship owners/management. The expected remuneration in the initial ranks in the Merchant Navy are as under:-
(a) Cadet - US $ 300-500
(b) 3rd / 2nd Mate
(On completion of BSc Nautical Science) - US $ 2000-3000
