Well this thread is in some sorts furthering the Book Review thread in the Current affairs section. However, that thread was already out of gas so I thought of starting afresh.

Poetry, as compared to prose, has always been more tender and closer to heart something hard hitting and soothing at the same time. Something which leaves you craving for more.

In this section we have seen that we Jatlanders are second to none when it comes to Shero Shayari. Surely we can discuss and deabte great poets and there masterpieces and exchange information on our favorites.

Let me start with my favourite: Amir Khusro. Now this man is hailed as father of the Urdu poetry. Truly a wizard, with the pen being his wand, Amir Khusro went on to write some real gems. Even in those times he did not shy away from experimenting (But creativity traces its roots in experimentation only). Here is one of my favourite couplet by the master:

Zehal-e-miskin makun tagaful, duraye naina banaye batiyan;
Ki tab-e hizran nadram -ay Jaan, Na lai ho kahe lagaye Chaatiyan.
Loose traslation is as follows:

(Don't overlook my misery by blandishing your eyes and weaving tales;
My patience has over-brimmed; O Sweetheart! why don't you take me to you bosom?)

The beauty of this couplet is that alternate lines are in Faarsi and Brij!

Trivia: Can you recall a famous song of Dharmendra-starrer Ghulami?
Gulzar was inspired by this couplet only when he penned:

Zehal-e-miskin makun ba-ranjish, Ki taab-e hizran bechara dil hai.....

I do not have much knowledge of urdu.butwhen it comes to poetry
SURYAKANT TRIPATHI NIRALA is my favorite poet.his poems BIKSHUK AND WIDHWA really touched my heart.MY 2ND FAV .IS HARIVANSH RAI BACHHAN .his poem RAAT ADHI HO GAYE HE is my favorite.hindi was never my subject but I have spent hours in university library reading poetry.

"Madhushala" by harivansh rai bachchan.....
Just with one poem, he has depisted whole life with the example of madhushala...

If you can, try and read it once .... just an abstract from it-

Madiralay jane ko ghar se chalta hai peene wala

Kis raah jaun mein hai asmanjas mein Bhola Bhala

Alag alag path batlate sab, Par mein ye batlata hun

Rah pakad to ek Chala Chal, Paa jayega Madhushala

I like "Tarkash" by "Javed Akhtar"....there are so many good poems in that book & when you read this book, you feel that you are reading Javed's life...really very nice...
here are some lines from "Tarkash"...
"Mai katl to ho gaya teri gali me lekin, mere lahoo se teri deewar gal rahi hai"

"Dhalta Suraj, faila Jungal, rasta gum, hamse pucho kaisa aalam hota hai,

one more(it's about his break up with Honey Irani)...

Why am i having a sense of deja vu after reading this? Oh I got it! This poem was in our course in ninth standard. I luved it then, I am rejoicing it even now.

If you all start getting amused in anticipation of some funny Tukbandi by persons of a certain hilarious type identified with their headgears, I must disappoint ya all coz this post has nothing to do with Sardaars.

This is about one of my favs -- Ali Sardar Jafri (No he has nothing to do with Javed Jafri either.)

One of the great poets of the century bygone, this man was had a certain liking for Vedanta and had even penned down some couplets which could be related to Hindu Mysticism and the philosophy of death and rebirth.

Consider the following sher:

(Ahem! Ahem! ooh! ooh!) Arz kiya hai, Zara gaur farmayen:

Khoon ki gardish, Dil ki dhrarkan, Sab ragniyan so jaayengi;

Main fir aaunga, Yahan;

Main ek guzarta lamha hun, Ayyam(1) ke fasoonkhane (2) mein;

Main ek tadapta qatra hun, Masruf-e-safar jo rahta hai, Mazi(3) ki surahi ke dil se Mustaqbil(4) ke paimane mein;

(Shabdo ki khubsurti par dhyan dein..)

Main sota hun, phir jaagta hun aur jaag ke phir so jaata hun;

Sadiyon ka purana khel hun main; Main mar ke amar ho jaata hun.

Translating masterpieces an atrocity on literature. It is akin to watching Gone with the Wind with voice over. So I won't do that but will write meanings of few words.

1.Ayyam: Time, Waqt
2.Fasoonkhana: Ghar, abode
3.Mazi: Past
4.Mustaqbil: Future

This time the man in question is a real sardar although a Mona one -- Sardar Sampuran Singh better known as Gulzar.

Chech the following poem:

Din kuchh aise guzarata hai koi,
jaise ehasan utarata hai koii;

Aaina dekh ke tasalli hui,
Ham ko is ghar mein janata hai koi;

Pak gaya hai shajar pe phal shayad,
Phir se patthar uchhalata hai koi;

Phir nazar mein lahu ke chheente hain,
tum ko shayad mugalata hai koi;

Der se gunjate hain sannate,
Jaise ham ko pukaarata hai koi.
