Rural Haryana is rollicking to obscene and lewd ‘ragnis’ available in the form of audio cassettes over the counter all over the state.

These cassettes are produced secretly, and therefore, carry no credits. But, the excellent audio quality indicates that the audio porn industry is controlled by professionals.

Each cassette has four to six ‘ragnis’ interspersed with equally dirty jokes and lewd dialogue between couples. The cassettes also have Haryanvi songs set to tunes of top Punjabi pop numbers. The lyrics leave nothing to imagination. Four-letter words are used without reservation.

The ‘ragni’ singers are accompanied by the usual harmonium, banjo, dhabb and gharwa (a percussion instrument made by tying a rubber diaphragm to a pitcher). This again clearly points to the fact that professional ‘ragni’ singers have been roped in to produce these cassettes.

Though the role of women players is limited to the conversations between couples, the voice-over of a woman uttering lewd dialogues and four-letter words is the USP of Haryanvi audio pornography. In rural Haryana, women never utter such words, even when conversing with fellow women. As such, rural youths are going gaga over this.

Haryanvi audio-porn first surfaced here about a month ago. For the first two weeks or so, these cassettes were being played discreetly in the villages. Within days, the craze caught on with college and university students here. Now the lewd noise reaching a crescendo with tractor-trailers which in this area are almost always fitted with cheap audio systems playing these cassettes at full volume here and in neighbouring districts much to the chagrin of women.

Inquiries reveal that the master tracks of these cassettes are recorded in studios in Noida in Uttar Pradesh which then are re-recorded digitally in professional laboratories in Delhi and Bahadurgarh. Each cassette costs Rs 50. The cassettes are sold without covers and carry no markings to hide the tracks of the producers. These are available even in villages.

It is learnt that the trend was first set in Bihar where such cassettes have been popular for the past several years. Bihar, the sources, said had gone further and the in-thing there these days were VCDs depicting topless girls performing on stage to lewd songs.

Police officials said here though they were aware of the fact, no seizures had been made so far. They said normally they raided shops only when a big company lodged a complaint about the infringement of copyrights which in this case is ruled out completely.

Meanwhile, music shop owners said they expected the sales to boom once the colleges and universities reopened after the summer vacations by the month-end. They said the audio-porn virus was slowly spreading to the urban areas too.

Respected Dharampal Jee,

I agree fully with you that degenerated culture is mushrooming in Haryana.
double meaning words have been used in folk Ragnis, the Cinema halls walls are pasted with nude posters, ragni competetions have lost theis social sanctity becouse of this porn type of material. This all is being done in the name that people want this. I donot agree becouse we are celebrating Faujee Mehar Singh Birth Day for the last 12 years in a very descent way.

I must say, this is ingenious. Lets give credit to some highly enterprising individuals.

Point is, I do not want government to do anything about it. They already have a lot to do abot, that they never do anything to do about. So lets not add another feather to their portfolio of failures.

Those who want to listen to it should not be inhibited. Those who dont want to listen to it, can volutarily opt not to buy it.

I find it highly hypocrytical of just any individual to curb other individuals desires. We all are human beings made up of similar stuff. We all think and feel alike. I am sure that many of us decry the very desires of others that we ourselves are slaves of.

Even Gandhi was hypocritical. If he really was desire-free, then he wont have had children himself.

Lets get real for once.

Dear Sumit,
If some one want to listen to these songs, no one can stop them, but then they should not play it on a tractor with full volume, making others to listen to these songs. I think that is what the Government must stop. I feel, that should be stopped by public itself.

Another typical Sumit reply!

Restraining myself from posting long replies, I would just say "Charity begins at home". Sumit, can u try what u have addressed in ur post in ur family. Will it be acceptable? Man is called a "social animal" but don't try to convert him back to "just animal". Freedom doesn't mean that u do what ever u want and where ever you want. It should atleast be done in social limits. And if this is not followed, social insecurity and crimes will prosper!

Moreover, if u favor this idea, you must support all forms of porn...jiska mann aaye woh karo...Think again!

Resp Dudee Jee and dear Sumit,

Thanks for the comments dharampal jee. As far as sumit comments are concerned I agree about individual freedom but if it leads to social Anarchism then it is problematic. Progressive Values in society always have a struggle with degenarating Values and Orthodox Culture but in turn what we are making also needs to be critically looked in to. never mind a healthy debate is also a sign of struggling society.

Thanks
