Inspired by Col Tawathia's posts on being good officers in Suicides in Indian Armed Forces (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?p=103026#post103026), was wondering what really makes a supervisor a good manager. Is just being a 'boss' and holding on to your authority enough?

Dear Amit Ji,
It is a very common subject and I guess we might be getting a lot of response to this topic. We all face the management problems whether we are managers or are being managed by some one.
To start with my personal belive in some thing:
"when in a profession, one person is placed subordinate to another,
senior if he is a gentleman, will never think of it,
and junior if he is a gentleman will never forget it".
What essentially it means? As McArthur had said, "I can't fight unless I can see it". That is absolutely true. If we don't know the problem we really can't solve it. By creating the atmosphere in the organization (like I had mentioned where both senior and junior are gentleman) the senior will be approachable and the Junior will always be able to share his/her all worries with his/her senior. There are many aspects of management. The worker should never be looking back to his shoulders. Give him more than what he needs in resources and he will never complain for if he fails, he is responsible. However this theory may be against the princeple of optimum utilization of resources. The best thing is to train him well to make use of available resouces in most profitable manner.
Many time a worker gets stuck with small problem, and then keep looking back for directions. Give him the liberty to make decisions (good, bad or ugly they are all better than indecision). Don't fire him for first mistake, teach him where and why he went wrong. All decisions are good, if they turn out to be in unfavorable results, it is only due to error of judgement in considering one or more factors leading to that decision.
For today, I guess it is enough. A lot can be written. Let us share other's views.
