Affirmative action is the politically correct and misleading euphemism for discrimination. In this case, it is reverse discrimination. i.e. It is discrimination against the majority class of the population.

So you can say that affirmative action is just another term for reservation. In this case, there is no set quota for pulling in minorities. If you are a minority, you automatically get considered for preferential treatment, while your real abilities and capabilities are overlooked.

In the US you do not need to be a affirmative action employer if your business or institution has a total strength of 12 people (its approximately around 10 +/- few people). If your institution has more a higher number of people, you need to show that considerable efforts are being made by you to have diversity in your institution. You may be given legal notices in response to Public Interest Litigations filed by gangs like NAACP. If you do not have enough "diversity" within an allotted time frame, government may either enforce diversity in your institution or threaten hefty fines.

In the US hardly any institution is ever cited for not adhering to affirmative action policies because Litigation brings negative publicity. Thus most institutions openly boast of their affirmative action compliance or at least show that they are trying hard enough.

I strongly believe that in a capitalist society there is a strong desire against discrimination because the employer wants best value for his money and thus hires the best candidate for the job. Proof lies in the fact that so many Indians and other people of color are being absorbed in the country's corporate fabric with open arms.
