MAN ON TAPE: Ravindra Pradhan is taken away by the police after he surrendered on Sunday.
Meerut/ New Delhi: The Uttar Police on Monday declared that missing lecturer Kavita Rani is dead and was murdered over sharing of booty and the blackmail of a former state minister.
Kavita, 29, a lecturer at the Lalit Kala Department of the Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, disappeared on October 23.
Police on Monday held a press conference where a man called Ravindra Pradhan confessed to murdering Kavita. Pradhan alleged Kavita was troubling him for a higher share in the Rs 35 lakh they had blackmailed from former state irrigation minister Meerajuddin.
Pradhan alleged that Meerajuddin, a leader of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, was captured on camera in a compromising position in his bedroom in Lucknow.
Pradhan, Kavita and a man called Yogesh used spy cameras bought in Delhi to record Meerajuddin is his bedroom and then prepared a CD to blackmail him. Yogesh helped Pradhan in murdering Kavita, alleged Senior Superintendent of Police Navneet Sikhera.
The CD is believed to have been made sometime in June-July. "We collected Rs 35 lakh out of which Rs 3 lakh was paid to her," said Pradhan.
Meerajuddin, who had to quit the Mulayam Singh Yadav Cabinet because he was not a legislator, said it was a "political conspiracy" against him and rubbished Pradhan's allegations.
Pradhan and Yogesh strangled Kavita and dumped her body in a canal in Sanauta in Bulandshahr on October 24, Sikhera said.
They allegedly destroyed Kavita's cell phone and the CD after killing her. Letters found at Kavita’s hostel indicate that she knew two other ministers: Kiran Pal Singh and Babulal, who are also from RLD.
Babulal said he had spoken to Kavita a number of times but didn’t know her well. Singh alleged his name was "being dragged into it due to personal enmity".
In the letters, Kavita wrote that she feared Pradhan would kill her. Pradhan, who claims to be UP Education Minister Kiranpal Singh's relative, surrendered in Noida on Sunday.
RLD leader Ajit Singh said action would be taken against party leaders if they were found guilty of any wrongdoing.
Police have renewed efforts to find Kavita’s body after a one found in the canal turned out to be that of another woman.
