Hi!! All,

Well, Its matter of pride & certainly time for celebration as we've won Cricket World Cup couple of days ago.....but the HYPE these cricket players are getting & Janta goin ga ga over team, is that worthwhile??? just read about yesterday Welcome home celebration of so called national heros in Mumbai.....how ppl r goin crazy over team & politicans that too were not losin ny chance of publicity & Govt and Cricket Board they are giving away Crores n Crores of Money extravagantly to the team like anything!!

On the other side....recently so called National team of National game HOCKEY won Asia Cup in invincible style....but not a single penny given to players forget about the appreciation n treatment...even here on Jatland the very thread bout Asia Cup hardly got much attention n merely there're aroud 10 replies!!:(:(

I agree ppl here in India are crazy about Cricket like anything....its more then a game....its a relegion!! Its ok but why other games neglacted like anything here in India even our so called National game...every other coutry including Cricket playing nations like Australia, England, South Africa always pay heeds to other sports too that why they keep wining madels in Olympics.... n here in India with more then 1 Billion population hardly 1 madel is what we get in 4 year...why so partility, why so disregard of other sports????:mad::mad:

Nowadays Cricket is a big lucraticve business.....even industrialist & politicians are also attached with the game n it'll keep earnin like anything.

Just read a news today that Indian Hockey team is on Hunger Strike to protest disregard behaviour of Govt...I support their protest as if u dont appreciate players hard work n dont reward them with atleast fame n money.....why they'll perform afterall they also need to earn bread n butter for their family....they dont merely play for fun!!!

I remember couple of years ago...old players of Hockey started a national league named PHL to take Hockey in mainstream....but its kinda flop as neither ppl paid any attention nor much sponsors!!


Well, I can go on n on but I feel there's no future for our national game...no matter if they earn Gold madel in Olympic but it'll be neglacted always....so I guess our national game should be changed to CRICKET and also ban all other sports!!!

Well, Media.....god save!!....frm the movment India won the cup.....these rational media be it ny medium...TV Chanel,News Paper,Web portals all r flooded with Cricket,Cricket n Cricket!!!

I good topic for discussion. All of you know that I am a sports fan be it cricket, hockey or basketball. The issue raised is extremely relevent. However we need to find out why it is so?

1. How many of us have written about Hockey on this forum itself as compared to Cricket?
2. How many of us bought viewing channels to watch Hockey matches? (In US you have to buy viewing these matches, sale of cricket matches is way up, while I have no news of any one buying the viewing channels for hockey matches).
3. If that be so, it becomes a supply and demand problem rather than Cricket and Hockey problem. Politicians across the world are businessmen. They want to invest money on popular things and not moral things.

The problem here is that these politicians are distributing the tax payers money to one game and giving nothing to other game. If it is the question of investment they just can't invest tax payers money for their personal political gains.

Our people in India need to bring these politicians to the national debate on TV and ask then as to why they are giving different treatment to different teams? We all need to support other sports people for this be it Hockey or any Soccer.

I watched whole Asia cup & always luv to watch every game but not cricket n golf....cuz I dont hv that much patience to sit for that long....but 20-20 form of the Cricket is really gud n found intresting :)

English Football league is famous world over and players salaries run into millions of pounds.

Cricket has not got the same status here.

FA is very rich in comparison to ECB.

GB Hockey hardly gets any coverage even when they win.

Its all commercial end of the day.

n as far as media role is being balemed, lemme say media did no step motherly treatment to hockey. asia cup news was broke in prime time n by all means d moment was fosterted...infact there were programmes by ppl like rajdeep on such repercussions of chak de. infact after movie chak de, media talked a lot abut hockey. See Jit, it doesn't make much of a difference whether hockey will remain our national game or not. Neither field hockey nor cricket is an indigenous sport so no point in fretting over the word 'National'.

And it is not some India-centric problem (if at all it is). In Japan, Sumo is their national sport but baseball and football get the maximum attention. If cricket is ruling the roost in India, it is on the receiving end in countries like England and Australia where, despite being the national sport, it lags far behind football and Aussie rules football respectively in terms of popularity.

Coming to the "world-cup winning" cricketers reaping a rich harvest, they were the same bunch who bore the burnt of public fury after the first round-exit at the ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. Remember the same Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is now cynosure of all eyes, had had his house vandalised after India lost to B'desh.

When was the last time a hockey player faced public's wrath? If not many give a $hit to their achievements, fewer take any notice of their failure (failures, in fact, far outscore the achievements on astro-turf!). Obscurity has its benefits too and there's a price to be paid for popularity.

I am not saying the hockey player's shouldn't be paid well. They should be. That is for the Government and IHF to take care of, but not at cricket's or, for that matter, any other sport's expense.

So Jit, let's not make the discussion about 'IF' Cricket can (have the fan following, accolades, glory etc. etc.), WHY NOT Hockey!!?!!.... I think the dicussion is more benifitted by simply asking "WHY not Hockey!!?!!"...

And THAT there should be the real discussion here, and at the regional, national level! Period.

Here is something else that irks me no end...EVEN as an obvious huge Cricket FAN:

Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes.
So Great! Loved the way he did it (all perfect cricketing shots) and hence a match winning performance...
More importantly as a spectator; It was Exciting to watch no doubt (and the format quite obviously supported that aggresion)!

How can it be worth Rs 1 crore in country where 80 per cent of the people are going to die without earning or saving a crore? :mad:

I love Hockey (or should I say LOVED hockey)...as a kid, would try and watch all those close matches, especially with India up against Pakistan (they are our favourite rivals, ain't they?)... :)

BUT then somewhere, someplace something happned, that probably happened to most of the other fans like me :o....Indian Hockey never grew, never tried to flourish furthur...never tried to regain the lost glory..... it just seemed to wither away with one bad performance after the other........... losing even at the Asian levels, .............while forget at the international level where teams like Australia, Netherlands and Germany (relative new comers to the format) could simply dance rings around our players!...

The Indian players were never properly coached to the changing rules, style and pace of the modern field hockey, the practise stadiums were never quickly transformed to the astro-turf and equipments, kits etc. that everyone else in the rest of the world was practising with... the Indians at the international arena simply looked jet-lagged at that level of competitions (and still do)!!!

...and so that brings me to the part of the point I am trying to make here; every Nation loves having a sport where they can say that they match the best, and can stand looking in the eye of the opponent!...hence in comes CRICKET!

A game, where the level of skills and competitive edge of the rivals was matched by oure players; and lo and behold suddenly the sport was like a bolt for the hungry sports fans! ...and they lapped it up with glee!......

Now any smart person will tell you, if you are good at something; IF YOU HAVE IT- FLAUNT it!!!
And THAT, dear members is what we crazy Cricket Indian fans have been doing, and that's what has been happening on the Indian sports landscape....................

Asian Championships (Hockey) and the Nehru cup (Football) is still not the exposure at the International level arena that a World Cup (twenty20 or 50overs One day International World cup) brings!... and that is the sad but true fact!

We need to up our gamesmanship in these other sports (and why just Hockey, what about Football, Volley-ball, Basketball etc.!?!)... we need to find the spark in this billion plus Nation to make kick-ass, cutting edge, competitve and killer instinct sportpersons!

...and then.....or should I say when and only when we achieve that same kind of successes in (any other) sport is when we can turn on the imagination of a sport Hungry nation!

If one has to choose a national game, I would suggest only the games which are played solo. Best one I can think is archery. It will do honour to Arjun awards also as this is the true sport great Arjun was best at.

my dad was inter-services team captain, air force/inter-services teams coach, junior india coach but still he didnt get support from govt side, thats why he had to look for options abroad, otherwise he loves hockey whole-heartedly and wanna take it up again as a coach after my education is done...
u are absolutely right, if hockey is given that much attention and money, we will be world champs for sure, india has potential.
moreover, if kins play hockey over cricket in india,, TO MOTAAPEY KI BIMAARI KA BHI ROG KATTEGA, AND GENERATION WILL BE MUCH MORE ACTIVE AND ENERGETIC. :)

unfortunately Haryana and Punjab are the only states where wrestling is a culture ! Wrestling is our tradition !
