Brief - No Indian varsities, including the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology, figure among world's top 200 universities this year while six Chinese universities were listed, signalling the rapid stride the Communist giant is making in higher education.
but what got my attention was the first comment i read there.... which is:
Why all of crying so much? Tell me first, is there any reservation facility in these top 200 universities? If yes then OK, feel shame and think if all universities has same criteria then why we are so behind from them. If NO then how can you think about quality education, when meritorious student with over 90% will sit outside and reserve student with less then 40% will get admission. Can you expect excellent output from our universities? THINK! THINK! THINK!
Makes sense... much sense:)

This is really an interesting article and I read the heated discussion board of rediff.
The fact is that this is reality. Let us accept it that the quality of education in India is deteriorating for so many odd reasons. Having friends who did their postgrads and research from IITD, I have learnet only one philosphy "
The secret of all success is to know how to deny yourself. Prove that you can control yourself, and you are an educated man; and without this all other education is good for nothing. (http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/2910.html) by

Hello,
As per my Point of view every discussion brings a new thought,
we see so many new people around with new ideas to discuss and
ratings also change with time. No harm in having the discussions...:)

How i wish things would have remained the same forever... and we could just refer to one thread for one topic all the time.
Rightly said Manisha!!!
It is clearly visible how our IITs have degraded and now not even amongst top 200 universities of the world. We are talking about becoming the next superpower but our education system is degrading day by day.
The worry with India is that students after school(those who atleast pass 12th) either go for government colleges where quality of education is a concern(and limited seats) or they go for private education in private colleges, most of which are not even recognised. Such private colleges and universities are more about minting money and running the business.
We all are so proud of our IIMs but do we even know where do we stand globally?

IIMs?......how many people go to IIMs.......Do something to improve the basic-elementry education in the villagges where 90% of India dwells....problem lies there not with u and me.

To the latest of what i got to know, Indian Government is allowing 100% FDI in education sector in India which means we will soon have some more private players coming in India in education sector.. Good or bad, cant comment but surely it will give a competition to leading institutions in india and an alternate to students going out to study.

I would like to contribute certain points
Reservation in education should only be for physically challenged citizens and for those people who are below poverty line.
Employment of teachers and lecturers should focus onto some of the aspects like communication skill and knowledge. Both are very much important for the education as both aspects are complimenting each other.
Education should be given more visual effects rather than reading huge books.
The structure of education and exam pattern in the universities / boards should be universal for basic degrees or vocational degrees. (This now differs from east to west to north and to south).
The fees for a particular degree should be made equal. Special sanctions for the people who deserve to be educated for a particular degree but drop out for the reason being unaffordable.
Please do not take the following examples personally.
In science and technology, at the degree level, most of the Indian Universities lacks a correlation between theory and practical. (E.g. We study synthesis of cholesterol in 50 steps and cram up for the exam but we do not do it practically. Practically we do synthesis only maximum up to 4-5 steps , hardly doing any characterization to prove the synthesis).
At school level we start reading “Misr (Egypt) ki sabhyata”, history teachers never show to the students where exactly Egypt exists on the world map and little children develops their whims and fancies about a particular subject and cram it up with out understanding.
A comparison:
Ph.D scholar quite often becomes a slave for his/her supervisor for years together. In Indian scenario Ph.D degree is in the hands of supervisor rather than any Education policy (Japan gives a date of submission of thesis as soon as the student gets enrolled for Ph.D).
Scholar in India struggle for the results of his research at stake of technicians. (In South Africa, Master student individually handles machines worth of millions of dollars at the university / institute and is able to finish his research work in a week’s time).
I am sorry to say that the quality of research done by IIT or IISc is no exceptional. Check IIT / IISc (www.scopus.com (http://www.scopus.com/)). Go for the IMPACT FACTOR of the journal (google serach) in which these people publish.
Endless to compare and feel ashamed....

Actually what i feel is these rankings are based on evaluation of various aspects of the institutions.. not solely on the basis of Education. Infrastructure, lab facilities, practical implications, faculty,,,, these are some such areas where Indian Universities seriously lack.
And IITs n IIMs are not Universities,, they are technical institutions... so its not at all possible for them to be in Universities ranking list.
From the same article.....
[[ For this year's survey, individual IITs were assessed, and not the "IIT system as a whole." And none of the seven IITs was considered good enough to find a place among the top ranking world universities, according to the survey.
However, IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai find mention among the world's top 50 technology institutions, with the former at 37 and latter at 33 ]]
Thou no doubt Indian Education system is way back than its counterparts in the west... but things are changing... n hope for the best. May be things wud be better in few more yrs.

Rahul! Madras University provides a very good curricullum for any degree course.
I wish to share some real time incidents.
1. Master student / Ph.D in the faculty if becomes part of the department politics, then he/she would finish degree in 5-7 years.
2. Punishments of Madras University : Write 500 times the Law of survival for the fittest for Bachelor's degree / Buy 4-line notebook (Meant Kindergarten Kids) and fill it up writing Periodic table of Chemistry. If undone the punishment would double.
3. Writing answers from the notes given by lecturer would fetch brilliant marks OR you score low/fail if you write something similar or better
4. The person issuing the provisional certificate in Examination Unit / Registrar's office could easily be bribed at Chepauk Campus of Madras university for recieving the marks a students yearn for.
These are few realities you can easlity come across at UNiversity of Madras
I wonder if this means the quality education.
Cheers!

hmmm... well i dunno chavvi why r u sharing all these... these are well known facts... and don think its only in Madras uni... its evereywhere including IITs n IIMs i guess although i have never been part of both but heard of...
so writing and sharing these incidents really gonna change it ????
if yes then i too wud like to write pages...
see things are changing very fast... dont consider this country very weak...
here ppl r really gr8... if someone is spiting on road or not using urinal that doesn mean that county is not progressing... things will change but not in one day... have a flash back of changes after freedom... its a good achievement ... and if someone says iss desh ka kuch nahi ho sakta ya phir ye woh... toh dhyaan rakho tum(eveyone not pointing u chavvi) bhi woh hi ho jiski wajah se desh barbaad ho raha hai...
yaha par jitne log hai batao koun hai jo nahi thookta hai road par... kitne log apni social duty ko samajhtein hai ... jo garib hai woh aaj se 50 saal peeche hai dheere dheere tarraki hogi... and same way system... don blame madras uni and system coz system consists of our parents, relatives ,,,, they r the one who r spoiling and including us... do we follow all ethics n principles...
chalo madras uni mein bribery letein hai par deta koun hai ????????????
chhodo yaar iss behas ka koi end nahi hai... individual ko khudh samajhna hota hai... khair iss baat par ek video link share karna chahta hoon...
