Tribune News Service

Hisar, November 12
An NRI fled from the venue of his second marriage here last night after his first wife landed there with the police and relatives.

He has been identified as Nitin Kumar of Patel Nagar area.

Sources said Nitin, who is now residing in the USA, had first married a local girl, Divya, in 2002. Immediately after the marriage, he went to the USA and remained in touch with his wife for a few months on the telephone.

Divya alleged that he had demanded a hefty amount from her family for buying a house in America, which they could not arrange. After a few months, he severed all contact with her.

However, late last night she was informed that he was marrying a girl from Sangrur at a house in Urban Estate II here. By the time she reached there, the couple had fled, but his family members, who were present there, admitted that Nitin had remarried.

The police has registered a case and police parties have been sent to Sangrur and Delhi airport to apprehend him.

Injured pregnant woman returns from US

Chennai, November 20
A 23-year-old pregnant woman with fractures and brain injury had to be brought back from the US in a special air-ambulance after she was allegedly tortured for dowry and pushed out of a running car by her in-laws.

Smalin Jenita, who had remained in a state of coma at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina, has been admitted to a private hospital here in a critical state.

She told her lawyer R. Saravanakumar here today that she had been pushed out of a moving vehicle by her husband and in-laws as her father could not meet their continuous demands for large sums of money as dowry.

Her family would now file a criminal case here, and also move the US Consulate and the National Commission for Women to ensure that Smalin’s husband, Christy Xavier Danius, a software professional sent on deputation to the US by Infosys, was brought back to India to face charges of murder, Saravanakumar said.

He said though the offence was committed in the US, Danius was an Indian citizen and sent abroad on a work visa under which he had to give a guarantee for the safety and well being of his spouse, which he did not fulfil.

Sebastian, who flew to the US when a family friend telephoned him two weeks ago from the US to inform his daughter’s plight, brought Smalin, who is 28 weeks pregnant and can now barely speak because of brain injury, back.

Inamullah initially gave shelter to Danius and his family members after Smalin was admitted to the hospital in North Carolina in an unconscious state. Danius had told the hospital that his car met with an accident on a freeway in Yadkin County and Smalin was injured. He forbade them not to inform anyone except him about her condition, Sebastian said.

Sebastian alleged that Danius neither bothered to telephone him though Smalin was admitted to the hospital on July 31 nor even met him when he reached the US.

Sebastian alleged that torture for dowry began immediately after his daughter was married to Danius and his mother and sister would beat her up.

“She kept thinking that he (Danius) might change once they were in the US. But Christy also took his mother Chellam, and sister Leema, to the US in March this year and the torture increased,” he said.

He said the marriage was arranged and he was forced to pay a huge sum and gold jewellery as dowry only a few days before the wedding to the Danius family as they threatened to cancel it.

“We accepted to all their demands and the marriage was conducted in a grand manner. My daughter stayed in her in-laws house and Christy Danius had flown back to the US within a week of their wedding,” Sebastian narrated.

Surprisingly, no police case was registered in the US, which is mandatory even if one is injured in an accident. However, Sebastian had lodged a complaint with the police in Tiruchy, from where the family hails, but no action could be taken, as the offence was committed in the US.

Rewari, November 21
A 17-year-old girl, student of class XII, who was reportedly picked up forcibly from Gindokhar village, 6 km from here, on Monday evening, was allegedly gang-raped by her two abductors inside their Max jeep.

The father, along with his daughter, yesterday approached the Sadar police which got the girl medically examined at the local civil hospital. The police registered a case of abduction, gang rape and criminal intimidation against Narseh of Harjipur village and Krishan.

Jind, November 21
A scare was created after some persons in a vehicle attempted to run over a woman litigant on the district court premises here this forenoon. The victim identified as Sheela Devi (30), hailing from Dalamwala village, was injured and had to be hospitalised. A case has been registered in this connection. No arrest has been made so far.

The scream and cries of the woman led to assembling of a crowd, who rushed for her help. While the police officials, including the SP also reached the spot, but the accused were able to flee from the place.

A case had been booked on her complaint about a year ago, claimed the police sources.

I think its something that we really dont know much about.

1. Further: http://www.chennai365.com/general/indian-woman-recused-by-us-based-pakistani
"...it adds that Danius did not have serious injuries, but his wife, Smalin Jenita, 23, and sister, Leema Pillai, 34, were flown to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem with critical injuries. Danius parents were also injured, but their injuries were not life-threatening...."
What explains the injuries to other members of the family. Leema Pillai (Christy's sister), too received critical injuries and was hospitalised. Was she too thrown out???? If yes, then for Dowry??? Well, this really needs some investigation. But, in my humble opinion, this matter we guys do not know much and so do not really know the fact.

2. Fabricated or the truth, we really dont know but his friends were seriously very concerned about him. Read further...

SUMIT: To conclude, "dowry harassments" can be and are (in fact) exercised by both the parties. Unfortunately, innocent girls are getting physically tortured and also a few boys [innocent??? :-)] are being false implicated. The result is nothing but a bad marriage and in most cases a separation. Sadly, that is bad.

Thanks,
Sumit

Groom turns out to be murder accused
2 weddings off, father made to pay compensation

Jhajjar, November 27
The marriages of two brothers were called off at the last minute when one of the grooms turned out to be a murder accused in Jhamri village in the district last night. The family of the brides (sisters) held the father of the grooms and the middleman hostage and let them go today following the intervention of the village panchayat.

The panchayat, led by sarpanch Urmila Devi, directed the father of the grooms, hailing from Sidipur Lova village near Bahadurgarh, to compensate for the expenses the brides’ family had to incur in making the arrangements for the marriages and asked the middleman to apologise to the brides’ father and the panchayat by standing on one leg and clutching his ears as token punishment.

Ishwar Singh had engaged his two daughters to Rakesh and Sunil, sons of his namesake in Sidipur Lova village, about 11 months ago. In the meantime, one of the two youths got involved in a murder incident and was lodged in Bhiwani jail for the past five months.

However, the family did not inform the family of the would-be relatives in Jhamri village.

Though the marriage ceremonies were fixed to be held during day, the barat arrived late in the evening and the grooms’ family started making excuses for the delay.

However, when they arrived, the brides’ family discovered that one of the grooms was in handcuffs and two cops were accompanying him. Following interrogation, it transpired that Rakesh was an accused in a murder case and had come out of jail with permission for 12 hours.

The disclosure shocked the brides’ family and it flatly refused to go ahead with the weddings. Amid beldam, which ensued the disclosure, the accused groom was taken away by the accompanying cops while the other groom and members of the marriage party fled.

The family of the brides held the gooms’ father and the middleman, who had arranged the marriages, hostage. They were let off after the grooms’ father paid Rs 65,000 as compensation as directed by the panchayat.

"Ishwar Singh had engaged his two daughters to Rakesh and Sunil, sons of his namesake in Sidipur Lova village, about 11 months ago. "
What was the girl's family doing for these 11 months. They never inquired about the bridegroom or what?? I think, this absence of 11 months after engagement needed an investigation.

"...by standing on one leg and clutching his ears as token punishment."
Silly:)!!

"However, the family did not inform the family of the would-be relatives in Jhamri village."
Both the parties are responsible for this. Boy's more and girl's a little less but both sides are responsible.

"...the brides’ family discovered that one of the grooms was in handcuffs and two cops were accompanying him"

Bartering NRI bridegrooms for NRI brides

Ludhiana, November 29
In a changed tack, non -resident Indians(NRIs) "flooding" Punjab during marriage season, this time, are looking for brides who can guarantee a complimentary marriage of an Indian brother or cousin with an NRI bride. Besides the talk in the air, the newspapers, particularly the vernacular ones, are flooded with advertisements saying "the groom was ready for the marriage only in case the girl’s parents could ensure an NRI relation for his brother".

An advertisement reads "wanted a bride for a medical engineer. Only those parties should contact which can ensure an NRI bride for his maternal uncle's son" . Another one reads "a 5'-10'' beautiful bride wanted for a triple MA Gursikh and only those who can arrange for an NRI bride for his cousin should apply".

Avtar Singh, a retired bank employee, said "twice, proposal of relation of his daughter could not materialise with NRIs because they were looking for a complimentary arrangement where they wanted an NRI bride for the groom's cousin." When asked why they were looking only for an NRI relation, the father replied "My daughter is an MBA and she wants to go abroad". Her’s is not an isolated case as there were scores of similar instances.

An insertion in a newspaper reads 'a girl on a student, visa or a working visa in England or Canada wanted for a clean shaved Sikh boy. Only a girl who can manage to get a permanent resident visa for his son abroad should apply."There are scores others who are looking for a match of foreign avenue for their maternal or paternal cousins. There are negligible insertions seeking NRI groom for Indian girls in the matching arrangements for the consent for marriage.

A resident of Model Town, on a request of anonymity, said I married my daughter to a Canadian NRI only when I got her cousin in Australia agree to marry his brother in a village in Jalandhar. We had no problem because her Australian cousin too was looking for an Indian groom".

Anil Dhawan, a college lecturer, said " majority of the youngsters want to go abroad. There have been tragedies like the Malta where hundreds of innocents died. Evemn illegal ways are tried. This method might look peculiar, but, under youths’ aspirations to go abroad, parents are forced to resort to such measures which are legal".

Aruradha Joshi, a housewife, said "I know there is nothing wrong in seeking a complimentary marriage, however, the government needs to keep a tab on the NRI marriages.

There are complaints of fraud in marriages and administrative checks are needed to save innocent brides from being cheated. The government first needs to put a proper check on the marriage process.

NRI enacts drama of death to escape debt in US

Ropar, November 29
The police here has traced non-resident Indian (NRI) Gurbax Singh Rai who feigned death to escape debt in the United States of America.

A Tata Sumo vehicle was found from Sirhind canal near Chamkaur Sahib by the police on November 21st. No body was recovered from the vehicle. It was presumed the driver of the vehicle had been swept off in the canal water.

The police here procured address of the vehicle owner from the registration record. It was found to be registered in the name of Sohan Lal of Bains village in Nawanshahr district.

Sohan Lal told the police his brother Gurbax Singh Rai had come from the USA recently. On November 21 he had borrowed his vehicle and had not returned since then.

The family members also presumed Gurbax Singh Rai had died in an accident. However, the police got suspicious about the accident story.

They got information about the whereabouts of Gurbax Singh and recovered him from Manikaran in Himachal.

The SSP Ropar told newsmen when questioned Gurbax Singh told he got trapped in a debt in the USA. He threw the vehicle of his brother into the canal to feign his death. He planned the record of death would be sent to the USA where his debt would be waived . He could live or go abroad again on a changed identity.

The police has handed over Gurbax Singh Rai to his family members. No case was registered against him.

Son-in-law booked for contract killing

Mundiya (Ludhiana), January 1
"I had thought I would get another son in the form of my Surrey (Canada) based son-in-law. But he turned out to be the biggest cheat, when he first harassed us for three years and then planned my murder, an act which I had not imagined in my dreams."

Ranphool, a victim of an international contract killing case, tries to sum up his feelings in those sentences.

When he finally opened up after a while, bitternesss flows, " I gave everything I had for the happy married life of my daughter and this is what they return to me."

The hurt is not only limited to the in-laws, " All newspapers, TV channels in India and Canada are talking about our case, yet not a single political or religious leader has come to offer sympathies or help to us."

There was time when Ranphool, a clerk with the District Transport Office, Mohali, and owner of few acres of land in this village, used to proudly show the picture to the visitors. Today, he tries to hide it, " Please don’t take photo of this picture. My daughter would be embarrassed. " he requests Tribune photographer Inderjeet Verma.

Badly pained at being fighting the case on his own, Ranphool terms that the society has collapsed," There is no support system. Only saving grace was of the police which acted on his own and caught the gangsters even as we had no idea a gang of contract killers was on our prowl."

The division no 7 police had announced three days ago the arrest of four persons, including a Canadian NRI and three contract killers from Ganganagar, who were on way to kill Ranphool Singh. The son-in-law Veerharinder Singh and father-in-law Inderjit Singh, along with a relative Sukhi , all based in Canada have also been booked in the case for conspiring the crime.

The three-year-long story of their treachery began with the marriage only on November 1, 2007

of his daughter Pawanjot Kaur. Veerharinder had said he was a graduate owning gas stations. He turned out to class 12 pass and an employee in a factory. Pawanjot was B.Sc medical.

Ranphool claimed the man and his family were all good till they gave wrong information to the embassy that had rejected the papers of my daughter to emigrate to Canada. It was only after several months struggle that an appeal was filed and his daughter got the approval to go.

However, Ranphool claimed the in-laws demanded Rs 30 lakh, "We tricked them that Pawanjot was sick and could not attend the phone calls of her father-in-law who was camping here to take the money. They only learnt when Pawanjot reached Canada."

He said she was not accepted in the family and went to live with her grandfather, " I started receiving threats which culminate in the contract killing plan."

Ranphool said he had not married his daughter to the NRI with an aim to send her abroad and felicitate the emigration of other relatives, "My father and brother were already there. We could have used that channel also. It was only that the canadian responded to the matrimonial that the match went through."

HANDIGARH: Poonam was bundled into a waiting jeep on Thursday night and thrown into the Rajasthan canal by her father and six other male members of her Jat family because she wouldn't let go of Mukhram, a young Dalit boy. But the feisty 19-year-old survived drowning, in what would probably have been the umpteenth honour killing in Haryana, to fight back and charge her relatives with attempted murder.

Presently at the Nari Niketan in Karnal, Poonam, a resident of Bani in Sirsa district, left home on September 18 last year on the pretext of taking some exam and married her lover. But on September 27 her parents got to know of it and brought her back by force. She was soon shifted to her relative's house in a village called Dhotad where family members tried unsuccessfully for three months to dissuade her from continuing her relationship with Mukhram. Their patience finally wore out on Thursday and around 10 pm she was thrown into the swirling canal, at a spot where the water was the deepest.

But only did she swam to safety, battling her way to the bank of the canal near Tibbi, a settlement on the Rajasthan border, but also approached the police to demand justice.

Confirming Poonam's story, SHO Anil Kumar said, "On Friday, a case was registered against the seven accused under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 364 (abduction with intention to kill) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. All of them are absconding and we are looking for them."

Among those accused are Poonam's father Prabhu Ram, her cousin Satbir, grandfather Jat Ram and four others. Sirsa SP Vikas Yadav, too, said prima facie it did seem like the girl's father tried to kill her. The case comes days after Subhash Chander, a Chicago resident, killed his daughter Monika, son-in-law Rajesh Jhamb and grandchild Vansh in their Oak Forest apartment because Monika married "below her caste."

Lalu’s sons thrashed for alleged eve-teasing

New Delhi, January 2
Two sons of railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav got into trouble for allegedly indulging in eve-teasing on New Year's Eve and were beaten up by unidentified youths in south Delhi.

In the scuffle, a personal security officer (PSO) accompanying Yadav's sons — Tarun and Tejpal — lost his service pistol, for which a complaint has been filed in the local police station.

Police sources said a preliminary probe revealed that Yadav's sons had allegedly indulged in eve-teasing first at Ashoka hotel and later at Connaught Place.

From there, the two, accompanied by the PSOs of the Delhi Police and Railway Protection Force, decided to attend a party at Chhatarpur area on Delhi-Haryana border. On their return, they allegedly passed some remarks at girls who were partying at a farm house near Mehrauli.

However, this time they ran short on luck when a group of youngsters decided to thrash them. The PSOs, sensing the gravity of the situation, did not reveal the identity of the two, the sources said.

Nursing bruises, Tarun and Tejpal were rushed to a hospital where they were provided first-aid, the sources said. — PTI

Chandigarh man in US kills daughter and her family
Ashish Kumar Sen writes from Washington

A 57-year-old man from Chandigarh set a fire that killed his pregnant daughter, her husband and the couple’s 3-year-old son because he was furious his son-in-law came from a lower caste and had not asked permission to marry his daughter, prosecutors in Illinois said on Tuesday.

Subhash Chander, a resident of Chicago suburb Oak Forest, was charged on Monday night with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of intentional homicide of an unborn child in the fire.

In a hearing at the Markham courthouse on Tuesday morning, Chander was ordered held without bond.

Prosecutors identified the victims as 22-year-old Monika Rani, her 36-year-old husband, Rajesh Kumar, and their 3-year-old son, Vansh. Monika Rani was five months pregnant. The medical examiner’s office said the victims died of carbon-monoxide poisoning and smoke and soot inhalation.

Prosecutors allege Chander told them he killed the family because he was upset Kumar belonged to a lower caste. Cook county first assistant state’s attorney Robert Milan told the court, “His son-in-law was beneath him in his opinion.”

Chander’s sister Kamla Devi denied caste was a factor. She told a local radio station her brother was innocent. “There was no family problem. There was nothing going on. Absolutely nothing,” Devi said.

Prosecutors allege Chander used gasoline to start the fire late Saturday. Witnesses were reported as saying they saw two men pouring the fuel in the hallway outside the Aroras’ apartment before the fire was ignited. Illinois state police said tests had matched the gasoline at the crime scene to that found on the clothes of the two suspects.

Arora worked as a cashier at gas stations in the area. The apartment complex in which the family died was inhabited largely by immigrants from India and reportedly owned by an Indian-American.
