The devastated sons of back-from-the-dead canoeist John Darwin said they wanted "no further contact" with their parents, after it emerged they could have kept them in the dark about their father's bogus disappearance five years ago.

John Darwin was reported missing in 2002 after he was feared drowned at sea in his canoe, and was later certified dead at an inquest.

But just days ago he walked into a police station saying he was suffering from amnesia and could not recall anything since he was reported missing in the sea close to his home. He is being questioned by North East detectives on suspicion of fraud in his home area of Cleveland.

His wife Anne initially spoke of her relief that her husband was alive but was forced to admit she had met him more than a year ago when she confirmed a picture of the couple standing side by side in July 2006 was genuine.

The couple's devastated sons Anthony and Mark said they felt they had become victims of a "large scam" and said "at this present time we want no further contact with them".

In a statement issued through Cleveland Police, Anthony, 29, from Basingstoke, and Mark, 31, from London, said: "Having seen the recent media speculation surrounding our parents ever since our dad was arrested, we are very much in an angry and confused state of mind.

"In the short space of time following our dad's appearance in London on Saturday, we have gone through a rollercoaster of emotion. From the height of elation at finding him to be alive to the depths of despair at the recent stories of fraud and these latest pictures. And the shock of being thrust into the media spotlight.

"If the papers' allegations of a confession from our mam are true then we very much feel that we have been the victims in a large scam. How could our mam continue to let us believe our dad had died when he was very much alive? We have not spoken to either of our parents since our dad's arrest and at this present time we want no further contact with them."

Mrs Darwin recently sold up the family properties for a combined £450,000 and left Hartlepool to start a new life in Panama just six weeks ago.

But the damning picture showed Mrs Darwin, 55, and her husband, standing in an apartment in Panama last summer. It was unearthed by chance by a curious single mum who found it on an internet search engine after reading media reports of Mr Darwin's sudden reappearance from the dead.
