Hello Jagjeet:

Well thats a great decision. For the step 1 and step 2ck, you have to follow the kaplans notes, and one of the review book..I read First Aid for step 1 and Crush the board for step 2 ck...

At the same time, also apply for some observership/research in the speciality you wish to pursue, coz the US Letters of recommendation are very important to get good no. of interview calls....its better if you read some forums and view the posts at: http://www.usmleforum.com/forum/index.php?forum=1

and the following website would be really helpful

let me know if you have more questions
Best wishes

Here is a quick summary of the time line for the residency application:

Lets say you have to apply for the academic year 2009-2010. The application for residency are to be turned in by September 2009. To look retrospectively from September:
you should finish usmle step 1, Step 2ck and Step 2 cs and have the result with you by the end of July 2009.
When you are eligible for the ECFMG certification(processing time for this certification after ECFMG has got all your exam result is 3-4 weeks). Now a days, the ECFMG certification is a criteria for the good residency program coz this is one of the requirements for the visa processing that you should be ECFMG certified. Read this all in detail on the usmle website in my last post.
On an average it take 4/5 months for the step 1 exam prep, and 3 months for step 2 ck exam and about 3-4 weeks for the step 2 cs examination.
REMEMBER: The score and US LOR are the two important things these days for the residency applications..so its better if you get score over 95 and NO ATTEMPT AT ALL IN ANY OF THESE. Attempt in any of these exams would be a really bad thing in your application.Better see what speciality you would like to pursue and what year you would like to apply for the residency match!

Hope this helps..better go through the website and figure out your time line and stuff...
