Paswan demands reservation in Army, higher judiciary

CHENNAI: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers and Steel, Ram Vilas Paswan on Friday demanded reservation for SC/ST in higher judiciary and Army.

"I am happy that Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan is an SC and he came up on merit. But we want reservation in the higher judiciary," he said.

"There should also be reservation in the Army, so that the Dalits and other communities can also go and prove themselves," the founder of the Lok Jansakthi Party said.

When pointed out that candidates for the Army are selected on the basis of merit and it was probably the only institution that was not politicised on the basis of reservation, Paswan shot back, "God did not create that institution. We only created it."

He also shot down suggestions that he was setting a dangerous precedence. “Either you give reservation or create a separate regiment as SC/ST regiment, like the Gurkha regiment. Put them on the borders, they will prove their mettle."

He said his party was fighting for reservation in the private sector. “There should be reservation in the private sector. Most of the government and public sectors are being converted into private sectors."

On the Sethusamudram issue, he said "We should not get into any controversy whether Lord Ram was born or not or whether he constructed the bridge. Only thing should be national interest. Even if Ram existed today, he would have asked the country to take that bridge if it benefitted the nation," he said.

"We should not indulge any issue in a religious sense. National security is most important," he added.

Why can'y Mr Paswan send his kids to army? How army times has he visited forward areas in his life? Will Mr Paswan back reservation in politics for retired Army officers? These irresponsible politicians will go any leanth for cheap popularity. Pulic knows what they talk...Let us not worry too much. We will hear many such statements as election approach nearer. There is so much shortage of officers in Army and airforce already. Let him send competent willing SC/STs. I am sure Army will be too happy to take them all.

Very apt concerns. Quite strange that this has not attracted many comments or reactions. Either all Jatlanders are confident that God will indeed save India OR they've already given up !

Why can'y Mr Paswan send his kids to army? How army times has he visited forward areas in his life? Will Mr Paswan back reservation in politics for retired Army officers? These irresponsible politicians will go any leanth for cheap popularity. Pulic knows what they talk...Let us not worry too much. We will hear many such statements as election approach nearer. There is so much shortage of officers in Army and airforce already. Let him send competent willing SC/STs. I am sure Army will be too happy to take them all.

Border kah to malum naheen, per yeh mayawati aur Paswan jaison ki security haata key inake hi with no Merits key Aam SC/ST civilians laggaye jayen, Aur inake agaar kuuch hoh jaaye to fir inaka ilaaz bhi aisey hi bager merit waale doctor karrein... Fir dekhenge ki konsa gadha Reservation mangta hai.

what is this about? the ram setu bridge or the army? as for the ram setu bridge, it is a great historical and religious landmark and should be protected by the corrupt indian government. however, they only see their interest (which means their pockets) so they may not give a crap about the bridge. as for the dalits entering the military, i thought they were already allowed in the military? they should have to compete just like everyone else. only then can they have a good military. but, today, when you give money, you can get in the military so that institution is also corrupted. overall, the dalits should have to compete to get in.
