One day

The father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family

Ontheir return from their trip, the father asked his son

How was the trip?
It was great, Dad.
Did you see how poor people live?the father asked.
Oh yeah, said the son.So, tell me, what you learned from the trip? asked the father.

The son answered:

Isawthat we have one dog and they had four.
We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end…

…We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.
Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.
We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond

…We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.
We buy our food, but they grow theirs.
We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them

Theboy's father was speechless

Then his son added,
Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are

Isn'tperspective a wonderful thing?

Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have

Appreciateevery single thing you have!

Good thought indeed :)

The underlying meaning of the story highlights the importance of outlook of a person, manner of looking at things and his perception.

We all have our own problems, and I think problems just change shapes & sizes but we cant escape them for long ! So, its always better to look for a ray of hope amidst the gloomy picture of our day to day problems.

Its easy to find ourselves hooked with a problem, but we all know it isnt worth it. We must try to find the silver lining and never leave the caring hand of optimism !:)

I think you misinterpreted the whole thing !

Firstly, the statement made by you is based on some misunderstanding as you interpreted my comment in an all together different perspective. I wrote 'bad comment' in a jovial sense and that too for Devender, who I know handles satires positively (and it was a satire).

There was nothing serious about that and your very own contention that I didnt appreciated that rests on the shoulders of you own perception you arrived at after reading that. Quite possible that I should have written it in some other way, but I put a smiling smiley to highlight my 'tone' ! :) ..... like this !!

Secondly, is appreciating all about extra sweetness ? NO ! Its literal meaning is "to grasp the nature, worth, quality, or significance" or "to judge with heightened perception or understanding" ! It no where says you cant debate upon it to arrive at something more appreciable, more valuable:)

Had I not appreciated his reply, why should have I said "there was something else which came from my head what about that ?"

After all its a virtual world in the sense that there are numerous possibilities where we cant be too clear with our tone, emotions etc. So, it was something very far from "not appreciating" :)

And last but not the least, even if you think it that way then if a person cant understand something but can make others understand or atleast ponder over it with all others whats the harm ? May be I didnt understood it, but cant I even try? Here, I must say if someone cant appreciate something he must atleast not condemn it for no reason.:)

And I appreciate your reply because now here is an example how I handled it positively. And to add to it, it helped me understand that many a times our simple and fair statements can be interpreted otherwise and we should be a little bit more cautious !

Bahut badhiya kaha Yogender ji, isliye nahi ki yaha appreciation ki baate chal rahi hain balki isliye ki ek aur bada acha concept mujhe yaad aa gaya !:p:)

Here it goes :

There is a fat line between being a learner and a hypocrite but still quite often we end up mixing both these concepts for a reason or the other !

Now the meaning :

If someone starts a thread on Aids or Cancer then is it obvious that he has it? :o hahahahaaa ! :p Same goes here ! :)

If I started a thread depicting the significance of appreciating all things around, then does it mean I am perfect at this ! No ! It just means that this concept caught mt attention and I thought like sharing with all of us along with trying to incorporate in my own life. So, am I a learner or a hypocrate?

Ms Shweta, thanks for taking time to explain your point of view. I appreciate your comments. If you read my comments, I did not say that you are hypocrate. I did not know that you are a learner. It is good to preach what you said above but it is too hard to appreciate always what ever you have and all things around you. I agree that the attitude of a person should always be positive though it is not practical in every situation.
Now your comments shows that you are really working hard on it.
Please keep up the good work.
Thanks.

Shweta ji.. You did distinguish so nicely, who is rich and who is poor. I appreciate ur comments.. we cant igone the real differences between " rich and poor"

When you're rich . . .
You write off your charity in taxes.
When you're poor . . .You look toward charity to help pay off your taxes.

When you're rich . . .
You get praise and adoration for finding shrewd new ways to save money.
When you're poor . . .
You go to jail for it.

When you're rich . . .
You get your dog a rabies shot.
When you're poor . . .
You shoot your dog when it gets rabies.

When you're rich . . .
Attending social functions and drinking brandy is how you stay in power.
When you're poor . . .
You actually work for a living.

When you're rich . . .
You take long vacations from your hectic life of drinking brandy and travel to exotic countries.
When you're poor . . .
You catch an exotic disease from some other country and can't even get a sick day.

When you're rich . . .
You complain about how "lazy" all those "poor" people are.
When you're poor . . .
You're too busy working to even complain.

When you're rich . . .
You can rest easy that your children will be financially successful throughout life.
When you're poor . . .
You might be able to get on welfare if you have a seventh child with your wife.

An honest reply Naveen, and I agree it is also a general tendency among many a people to feel somewhere within, a disliking for or a relatively lesser liking for some thing which we used to appreciate a lot when it was not with us. All the earlier desperation seems to be swallowed by mere possession of that !

And why I think this happens is that we are easily fascinated by every newer, relatively more appreciable thing and fall for that easily. And then there starts a new journey to seek possession of that newly discovered delight !

But this isnt an applaudable tendency if this goes beyond a limit. One must be open to accept newer things, but at the same time he must not discard his present collections just because he finds them not too good today !

It makes life difficult and calculative. Life is meant to be free flowing and shining either with or without these newer worldly possessions. Happiness is not something which stems out of owning something .... it comes from within ...... we must learn to make ourselves happy naturally and simply !:):)

Sorry for being a critic here :)

What i mean by my post is that if we don't try to discourage someone by all these mothods that is another aspect of appreciation.

Appreciation doesn't mean that we must say a few words but appreciation should be evident from our deeds and behaviour towards others. :)

Which methods ? Do you want to say that I discourage people or you are talking about it in general ?

Anyways, as regards to your view that appreciation need not be vocal or written, I have also mentioned this point in one of my post here. Appreciation is not about flattering or mentioning it again and again. Its a feeling most importantly.

Still, we must not refrain ourselves all together from making our silent appreciation vocal and evident, at times it should be conveyed too :)

Anyway, in this hopeless venture I've been struck recently by the two meanings of the word appreciate.

One meaning is the one where we consider what is good, right or true about something or somebody. We ponder what we like about them or it, what is valuable about them or it or the situation.

But what intrigues me is that the very same word is also used in a financial sense—to indicate something that is rising, growing or increasing in value, as in, "my stock is appreciating".

avesh

To take an example: Have you ever noticed that when you appreciate someone they seem to blossom around you? Indeed, that they seem to blossom in general?

Look in your own life: Think of someone who really appreciated you in your past. Didn't you just seem to blossom and flourish around them? To open up more, to appreciate yourself more? To begin to see, instead of obstacles, your own beauty, divinity and possibility?

To take another example: Have you ever noticed that when you pondered what you might be able to appreciate about a seemingly hopeless or negative situation that it seemed to transform from hard and unyielding to flexible and fluid? Ever noticed that?

When we appreciate people, they seem more able to appreciate themselves. When we appreciate situations, even they seem more able to appreciate themselves and to evolve. When we appreciate the universe, it seems more able to appreciate itself. When we appreciate God, it seems more able to appreciate itself.

I think that is exactly the truth. The universe gets to appreciate itself through your appreciation. Absurd as it may sound, God Itself gets to appreciate itself through your appreciation.

As we remember, it's all God. So when we appreciate some small part of It, we are appreciating God Itself, because there are no parts—there is only God, there is only the One, there is only the Totality.

When I hear people talk about how God is on "their side" I confess I'm unable to comprehend it. How could God be on somebody's side and not be on the other side as well, since He/She/It is everything? Impossible, in my opinion.

God is everything, loves everything. How could It love one part over another, one person over another, one nation over another? Impossible. It's everything, with nothing left out.

Everything is equally valuable. The merest bug crawling on a vine is equal to the majesty of the galaxies, because the One is equally represented in each, is equally in each,
is each. Just different scales of the One, that's all.

I probably sound like a babbling madman at this point. I probably am a babbling madman. But I've had to come to terms with the notion that even I—imperfect as I am, just stumbling from one mistake to the next—are "part" of that Eternal Love. And so are you, angel.

You are not only part of that Eternal Love, you are that Eternal Love. It is manifesting in you now, it is flowing through you now and It always has been.

Eternal Love is you, is us, now and forevermore...

Which methods ? Do you want to say that I discourage people or you are talking about it in general ?

Offcourse i am talking about it in general :)

Exactly ...... appreciation is the real feeling which comes by itself without any flattery. Some genuine words can do the real job which can't be accomplished by using bigger hollow words. :)

that was good!
