Hello Birbal Sir

I am Abhijit Boora from Hisar, i have enrolled in Michigan technological university at Houghton ,michigan in mechanical enngineering for a Masters Degree.i did my schooling from HAU CAmpus School and degree from ITM, gurgaon.i got 72% degree with 1400 and 300 in GRE and Toefl.I was happy to get a admission here and directly came here after college, i got my last sem marksheet this july.
However, when I came here in the US was told that I will not be issued an Social Security number because i dont use my last name,in my 10th class, it was mispelled by my teacher, so I had to delete it, so my all documents including the name as Abhijit only. Here they say that I need to have a last name to get a SSN , ab how do I add my last name boora to my passport and VISa because I will not be paid anything without the Social Security number.I had told them this before coming here but no one told me that I would be denied a SSN.
Now i am repenting my decision to come here, i left a good job offer from India to come here.
Do you have any info to get out of this mess any how.
Please if any one has any knowledge of this problem let me know, i am in immensely agitated with all this problem.

thank you
Abhijit Boora

Abhijit,
Try changing adding your last name in passport by contacting indian consulate in usa. I think you would have to get the name changed in visa(F1) too. did you try this option? hope it helps the cause

Abhijit,

Your problem is not unique. I have seen these problems in many cases, but the post 9/11 craziness in USA makes it worse.

In Canada, I know, a name change can be processed on the same day of the request if one pays the slightly higher fees for expedited services.

Since you are not immigrant of USA, you may need to go through the Indian Consulate in Chicago, but I do not think this should take more than a week. So, it is a headache, but not a big problem.

Abhimanyu,

Mechanical Engineering is the most versatile branch in the sense that its graduate can choose a variety of caeer paths.

If you are good in math, I suggest going for grad studies in Industrial engineering as it offers very good future. If you have people skills, MBA is also good option. I would not suggest M.S. or Ph.D. in Mech Eng if you are not liking the program at undergraduate level. Still, you should do your best now to keep all doors open in the future.

Another option, I suggested to few and those who took it ended up with good jobs is M.S. in Finance (or some places called quantitative finance). There are few posts on that in this thread if you look through the whole thread.

Good luck.

Abhijit,

I am not aware of current American rules, but it may be possible to get the new name on Visa by just crossing the border to Canada (Toronto American Consulate). Of course, you will need to pay for the trip to Toronto, but it is not that expensive. Also, you will need a tourist Visa for Canada, but I can write a letter of invitation to you (required by Canadian Consulate) giving the true nature of the problem and I am sure they will process it quickly.

Krishan,

Immigration to Canada is fairly straightforward, and all the information is available on various posts on Jatland. However, the problem is the processing time. I am not sure how fast you can get it processed from Ireland. I think it will be faster than applying from Delhi.

For accounting designation, you have to go through some exams in Canada. Mr. Ravi Chaudhary (Jat History) is the one I know who was C.A. in India and then became a C.A. in U.K., and now a C.A. in Canada, so I suggest you contact him and may be he can give you some leads for employment offers.

Hello Kundu Bahi,
I have worked in Ireland for 3+ yrs, than immigrated to canada and worked there as well for 5.5 yrs (in IT field). I can tell you by comparison that life won't be same in Canada as in Europe. Also in my opinion there is no harm in applying immigration to Canada, but I guess you may not like it, because most of the regulated ( or so called self regulated) profession are hard to crack in (not because they are tough...but i guess they are design in such a way that a newcomer is always in disadvantage, of course if you have strong desire and determination then everything is possible). But I might be wrong because I am not from Finance area.

if you are really interested in immigration:
put your application ( for u Canadian embassy in London is the application center)
definitely its better to apply from Ireland than from India. ( from Ireland you will get your final immigration with in a yr max).
visit:= www.cic.gc.ca and look for skilled immigration section.
Also, my suggestion would be to keep both options open.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Raj,

If you are interested in Ph.D., then you have to write the GRE soon as the applications should be completed by January end for September admission. Many Computer Science programs require Advanced GRE as well.

Depending on your GRE score and marks in your undergraduate and M.Tech. I can suggest you few universities, although I think there is plenty of information on this site to make an informed decision.

Uncle Birbal Ji.

I'm writing on behalf of my friend back home in India....
Unka Dilemma...for applying overseas

1. International Couriers @ 500 per courier (avg. 1.2 per university to 9 of them)
2. International Calls from cellphone @ Rs. 10/- per minute - This hits the worst.
3. Essay writing and getting reluctant friends to review (rewrite) - I believed I was an awesome pen. One Statement of Purpose SOP draft and the confidence plummeted like no tomorrow. I realized I suck at putting two sentences in correct order with acceptable flow, lets not even talk choosing appropriate words (although you probably already know what I'm talking about).
4. Recommendation - The toughest part of an application is getting a professor to write good things for you. Slightly inferior in toughness, although equally frustrating, is getting him to make all your deadlines.

Bakke maine GRE TOFEL aur unkee cost tu calculate ke hee nahin

Uncle Ji help them out

Dr.Birbal

Since you are a professor in Mechanical Engg., I wanted to ask you this specific doubt. I am enrolled as a Graduate Student in Mechanical Engg. at Michigan Technological University working on a Ford Project on Knock Detection. Its a nice project and I am learning lots of stuff, my adviser wants me to convert from MS to PhD, I am funded right now so there isn't any monetary advantage for me transferring to PhD. But what are the advantages of doing PhD if I don't want to go into academics and want to join a Auto Major and preferably do MBA later on. I have heard that most companies are reluctant to hire PhD guys as they are considered to be over qualified for most jobs , is that true?

Hello Uncle,
I'l be highly thankful if you could review my case and suggest accordingly.

I graduated from high school in May 2006 with 95%. I enrolled at one of best College in Delhi University for B.A. Mathematics (Hons.) However, I wish to pursue Economics in combination with another subject, may be, Mathematics, International Relations, Psychology, English or even History. Alongside I also wish to pursue something in the field of Art and Design. The opportunity to try out different subjects and pursue a wide range of academic interests is something that I found unavailable at my college, Delhi University. Hence, I decided to apply to colleges in the U.S. and U.K. And I have discontinued my studies at my present college. As of now, I have been admitted to Warwick and UCL in the U.K. ; and to Brown and UCLA in the U.S. Also, I am on the waiting for UPENN and University of Chicago. Brown was my first choice for college the reason being it allows a competitive yet flexible academic environment.

But before I accept the decision, I wanted to know if its worth it. Is it a good plan to pursue an Undergraduate degree from this University? My other option is to go back to a college in Delhi University and pursue B.A. Economics (Hons.) What do you think is a better choice? And what are the job prospects after a degree from an Ivy League school like Brown?

After pursuing my Undergraduate degree, I wish to study at a leading Business School in the United States itself. But my family insists I take the Civil Services exam. Is it true that after pursuing an Undergraduate degree from a foreign University, I am no longer eligible to sit for the exam? I thought the main criteria was that one should be an Indian citizen. Any how, this is just for my parent's satisfaction. My prime focus in the future will be on getting into a top business school. Please guide me as to how I should go about my decisions.

Thank You

hmmm, I wouldn't be surprised!
Well, in case you don't know what graduating from high school is, its the same as finishing your 12th grade!
I think you are in desperate need of some updates along with a dash of language and comprehension skills; seems like you are still living in the 18th century or some backward Haryana village. Find yourself something else to do; you seem really bored!

Dear Prof Birbalji,
thankyou for helping haryanavi jats for their educational aspirations. i would also advice students to look for previous mails of yours before putting thier questions, otherwise it will be difficult for Dr birbal to answers to evrybody, if the questions are of general nature.
I had seen that in last 19 pages there are only two times that GRE scores are mentioned. So I would request you to mention what is good GRE score and students who have taken GRE should also write their scores.
I had taken GRE and scored 1340 (Q-760 and V-580) AW- 4.0 and my toefl score was CBT(277). I had tried for 4-5 US Universities each time for three years but I did not get admission anywhere. Though I had mentioned I would take admission if funding is available.
I had done MSc Delhi Univ and MTech, Applied Botany from IITKGP and was looking for PhD in Biotech or Plant Sciences.
But lastly I got PhD* in Germany and working here these days.
So I would suggest students to take GRE seriously and try to get score around 1400 or more if you want to get PhD somewhere in US with funding, rather than applying with less scores and wait for admission results every year.
Though some ppl with scores around 1200 also got admission.
I would like to request Prof birabal to tell avg GRE scores of students in different fields of some US/canadian Universities

Preeti,

Dr Birbal Singh has given you excellent advise. I could not improve on that. I would like to reiterate that NJIT is better than IIT, mainly because of location. I have a few friends who have graduated from not so good institutes in NY and have good jobs. They could intern at finance firms which gave them a headstart.

I was wondering the reason you did not apply in cheap states as TX, Florida and others. They have pretty good institutes here.

good luck!

Respected sir

I have admits from all the 5 universities to which I had applied so now the task becomes more harder. I request you to advice me in selection one of the five.

1. University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth
No news of aid yet, they are saying the aid decision is still pending. Tuition Fees - $12,976 for one year( 9 credits/sem)
2. University of Missouri - Kansas city.
No aid granted as of now. They have sent me the I-20
Tuition Fees - $13,087

3. New Jersey Institute of Technology
They have sent me the I-20 and have awarded me Provost Fellowship of $2000 per sem.
Tuition Fees - $15,122 - $4,000 = $11,122.

4. Illinois Institute of Technology(applied for computer engineering)

Received the I-20 today, no news about aid but they have some Co-op prog where u can study for one
year and then wk for one year as internship and then cm agn n complete ur studies.
Tuition Fees - $12,500

5. Illinois state university ( applied for masters in information science)
Tuition Fees- $10,000

Please help me decide one of those five colleges on the basis of
- Academics
- Aid situation
- Job prospects after graduation.

Those who do law from Oxford or other British universities usually require 2 courses from Canada to get credentials to practice, so it should be very similar for those from India. The best is to go to York or U of Toronto and get your transcripts evaluated. These days there is lot of pressure on various professional organizations to assist foreign trained professionals.

Renu,

You need to have good academic background, high GRE score, and excellent recommendations to get assistantship. Your advantage is that HAU has good reputation. There is lot of information on this website about graduate schools (taken from US News and World Report). But, I suggest you apply to universities where former HAU students have gone and done well. You may try few in USA and a couple in Canada too. Purdue, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigne, Minnesota are all good schools. In Canada, University of Saskatchewan and University of Alberta are worth trying. But, once again, if you have professors who were educated in USA or Canada or know seniors, it is good to try the same schools because they already know how good HAU is.

Good luck.

I do not know about Tarleton state University, but if you option to study in Canada or USA, and you are legally allowed to work through co-op placement, I woul suggest USA just because it is a big country and potential opportunities are lot more than Canada. The advantage in Australia is the nicer weather, but again, it has a small population and hence relatively fewer opportunities comared to USA.

But, first check the legitimacy of this Tarleton State University.

Neeru,

There is enough information in various posts on this site rearding procedures for application, requirements, estimates of expenses, chances of scholarships, and ranking of graduate programs in each field.

You will need to write GRE, TOEFL, and do well in the. I assume you have strong academic background. For selecting the universities, look at one of the post here by Sumit Dahiya, where he reproduced the entire rankings from US News and World Report.

Raman,

I am not in your field, but I can say that research in Genetics and Plant Breeding is extremely important in North America, and if you get admission to Ph.D., you will get financial assistance automatically.

As usual I suggest you write GRE and TOEFL soon. Most applications need to be completed by January 2008 for Sept. 2008 admission. I can suggest University
of Guelph, University of Saskatchewan, and University of Alberta in Canada. But, there are several top notch US universities in your field and you can select 3-5 from them depending on your GRE scores.

There is enough info on this site about graduate schools in all fields.

Good luck.

With IIT brand behind you, I think all you need is very good GMAT score, good reference letters, and your statement to get into any of the top business schools.

I also suggest you think about a good program in Finance (that will likely lead to more lucrative career) or industrial engineering.

I have read few posts here, my advise is learn the language first. SAT test in US for high school students who wants to pursue their college education. If you want to pursue higher education in US, you will have to take GRE type exams. Let me tell you from experience these tests are hard, they are not about memorising answers from some book, albeit test your knowledge in written english, grammar, punctuation etc. Its even harder for technical fields like engineering, computer science, where you have to do critical thinking aka critically analyze given situation. There is no right or wrong answer to these questions, its all about aptitute.
You can use internet for relevant research.

Doing B.S from US, a four year course will be very expensive as compare to same from Inidan university.
Tution fees can range anywhere from $10K -40K per year. Plus expenses
B.S from us does not make sense, but MS and PHd does.

Dear Vandana:

Here are some universities in USA which offer PhD program in Food Science, you can go to their web sites and read the admission requirements. I am also sending their website links in your E-mail so that you can research more. State universities are cheaper than UC. Once you get admission you can always do on campus part time job, which will take care of your expense. You may apply for research and/or teaching assistantships through your academic department. Every University has student employment center which provides a searchable database of part-time, one-time, temporary, and summer full-time job opportunities. Later during your course you can apply for scholorships. All the universities have section for international students which guides you through admission process.

1. University Of California Davis ,
2. University of Florida,
3. University of Maryland,
4. University of Wisconsin-Madison,
5. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is located in Blacksburg, Virginia,
6. Cornell University,
7. Oklahoma State University,
8. Kansas State University.

The best advice I can give you is forget about Australia, UK, Canada. If you have a law degree and you do management course from Switzerland or Austria in International Business Law, that will be much better. But before you embark on this journey, you must have flawless reading, writing and communication skills in English. These kind of jobs with law degree and International business law require multi lingual person with charisma. As far as pay is concerned, a friend of mine who went through this route is making $330,000 + expenses.

Before you go for higher studies first determine what is your goal in life. What do you want to accomplish in 10-15 or 20 yrs from now. If making money is your goal, then pursue that goal. If you want to have contentment in life and feel like you made contribution to someone, somewhere at something then find it and pursue it. Remember this Higher education makes you very specialized in your field. You have to have a crystal clear idea about your future goals
