Hi Everybody,

I was going through the web pages of IMA and thought of writing a few things about it.

The centre-piece among the formal events during inauguration of IMA was the inaugural address by Sir Philip Chetwode, which was delivered in the hall named after him. His address was a pointed piece of stirring oration and has come to acquire a kind of immortality because a passage from his address has been adopted as the Credo of the Academy:

"The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time.
The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next.
Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, Always and every time."

Chetwode Building is the main building of IMA and the Passing-out-parade (POP) happens in the drill square in front of this hall. The GCs (Gentlemen cadets) then pass through the main building and become Officers. In this building is the Chetwode Hall. Most important ceremonies happen in this hall. It is in this hall that these 3 important lines are written in Golden (Brass) words.

P.S. I would like to hear from the Army guys to elaborate upon this information. Also it would be great if they can share more traditions of the academies like NDA/IMA.

Hi Ramesh,

I already know a lot about fauj, fauji's, IMA, NDA and OTA. I have heard a lot about the traditions and the experiences of cadets in these academies from my family members who are in the army.

My intent of the post was to ask our fauji bhais to share there stories about there stay at the academy, their point of views about life at these fabulous places, etc so that everybody on jatland knows about them.

I think it is a very good idea. My father's OTA (Madras) experience was challenging

given his village background but looking back i think he doesn't regret it. Local people in Madras city including shopkeepers would not respond if asked something in Hindi due to their resistance to the language which something he never expected could happen in India!

Dear Every One,
I am one of the lucky person who had spent better part of his life with 2 Raj Rif. I am proud that I was commissioned in this great outfit and later on commanded the same from 1996 to 1998. Why this battalion is so good and famous is because the atmosphere in the battalion is like our own home. The initial order of raising of the battalion says that soldiers only with exceptional qualities are to be posted to this battalion. Raised on 5th November 1817, the battalion is the proud receipent of the First ever Victoria Cross awarded to any Indian Unit. The level of motivation maintained in the unit can be seen from the letter written by a Rifleman to the Commanding officer during second world war. I reproduce the original letter as given below:

" Cherisher of the poor, live long. After compliments, I beg to state that it is written our religious Holy Books that when there is any affliction on the kingdom, in which we reside, it is our first fundamental duty to help the King. I have got nothing but my Reserve Pay, but I request that this be sent to Army Headquarters, monthly, as an offer on my behalf, until the end of the War.

Sd: No. 12543 R/L/Nk Raghbir Singh
2/6th Rajputana Rifles (P.W.O.)

Note: And if I be called for colour service when the necessity arises, then the above monthly donation will be sent from my pay."

The battalion even today maintains similar tradition.

Kindly note that we don't like to be addressed as 2nd Raj Rif, because the battalion is called "SECOND TO NONE"
