View Full Version : Who is the reigning King (and Queen) of Hindi music?

So ok, it if is a Friday…and I am sitting in a land where it’s all about the weekends!... ;-)
At the same time Jatland here is having a flurry of posts which seem just a tad serious when staring at two days off from work.

How about a silly post for a change and just a string of one liner reply posts?

Let me see; what can we start off as an amusing topic…

Well ok, being a great fan of music and Hindi Film songs I was wondering what is the popular choice out there (on Jatland)...Who do you think is the King (and Queen for that matter) right now?...Let me give you all my personal choices for starters, and I guess then you people can piggy back on it-

Sonu Nigam; for a person that started off like a non-entity and simply singing remixes of popular Oldies for ' Mr.Jai Mata di' of T-series...he has evolved into a major force nowadays...and what a voice! Seems like there is no type or style of song that he cannot tackle with ease.

He easily gets my number one vote (Followed very closely by Udit Narayan and Abhijeet)-[notice there is no mention in the race about Mr. Kumar down-and-out Sanu]

Sunindhi Chauhan; The youngest singer ever on the Indian Bollywood scene is already walking leaps and bounds...She may not be there yet, but mark my words- She is slated to be a top performer.

Sunindhi slips past Shreya Ghoshal and Alka Yagnik to get my thumbs up sign. [Oh, anyone ever heard the name of Mahalaxmi?... remember the movie 'Sur'?]

All right people, let me see what voice moves you when taking that long commute to work in your car, or the CD player plugged to your ears when taking the metro....or maybe it is just when you got your feet up on the couch, stretched back and savoring the music from your boom box, lights down low and the rain tapping on the glass panes outside...(Ok, ok...so you got the picture...)

I am more of a bhangra and hip-hop fan but dont mind listening to any kind of music as long as its not country. Again pin-pointing a single favorite singer would be too hard. I mostly listen to music while driving so anything that makes me press hard on accelerator is cool!
I think Sonu Nigam is good.

I think reighing queen is undoubtedly still "Lata Mangeshkar". However, the male section is undergoing the same phase as Indian politics, "kabhi yeh to kabhi woh". There are several of them but shining only in phases.

Unfortunately, the days of the Indian nightingale are long over now...
Lata will go down in History's golden pages as a legend no doubt (and I hardly think any of the above mentioned female singers will ever even come near achieving what she did in her own lifetime)...but unfortunatley she cannot be exactly called the 'reigning queen' anymore!...as It would be quite misleading to do so...

I think we have many great singers..More than singer, I like the songs..Each singer has given some great songs..Its really hard to assign number to songs which can be called all time hits. Let me venture to number some, which I really like to the extent that I will leave everything when thes4 songs are being played;

1. Mere mahboob tujhe meri muhabbat ki kasam..
2. Jab rat hai itnee matwali, fir subah ka aalam kiya hoga
3. ye juhke jukhe naina, lat bal khaati
4. hum aaj kahin dil kho baite
5. dil hai ki maanta nahi..

arrey doston bahut songs hain...So in nut-shell, for me its the song which matters more than the singer..

I have liked Lucky Ali's sung songs from the movie 'SUR' rather than his albums...('Aa bhi jaa'; and 'Jaane kya dhoondta hai ae mera dil'...)
Alas, Mr.Ali has unfortunately too much of a monotonous talkative way of sing song to my liking...
Tell me the songs (movie) for which KK has sang recently... [He is different from this Kailash kher guy, right? By the way listen to Mr. Kher sing 'Rang Deeni' from the movie DEV...amazing fusion stuff]

Yaar Shaan is quite good, but I must say he has bracketted himself in a certain style...and therefore he does only those kinds of songs...(Can you imagine him crooning slow romantic numbers?)

By the way Jit,... on a separate note; I was quite amused and found interesting your post on the Height's (Tallest Jat)... I was just wondering what is your actual weight that you carry around with your height (You came out the tallest right?)

Uday Dahiya (Sep 20, 2004 03:35 a.m.):
all r good but best are
Manna Dey & Lata M.

Oye yaar Dahiya saab, aaj kal ke logo ko bhi kuch credit de do yaar...itne bure bhi gaane nahi gaate!!!

Actually it has just been the last three to five years when the music scene has kind of picked up for the better and towards the upswing. The latke-jhatke songs have been dismissed by the masses (remember Govinda and Karishma?)...who have now shown a preference and acceptance for the more golden melodies and better lyrics.

Also it is important here to write a bit about the remixes.
They are a different genre of music and seem to have caught the young generation's [and Mr. Kalkhunde's ;-)] imagination.
Now I would say, barring the sometimes bordering on ridiculous videos...the catchy repackaging of old songs is not really a bad idea as it brings (sometimes forgotten) older music back into circulation...right among the new generation. Specially for the uninitiated few and very young music lovers some of who do not even know for example, who Manna Dey was!...

So there is no harm in creating an excitement again about some of the best music that is all but getting lost somewhere eating dust in some record stores (Record: remember that all but forgotten dark black disk that used to go on top of a rotating base, with a needle hovering over it that created the music? LOL)...so technically, I am all for the remixes....Whatever it takes!!!

But here is the catch; Remember remix is ONLY good when handled by a real professional and one who knows what he/she is doing (with great sensitivity, respect and awe towards the original song)...God forbid the way remix kings are coming out of the woodwork!!!

yaar bahi meri actual height is 6'4" 193 cms and it's true but not tallest one, just go thro the link there's a jat boy who's 6'5".
yaar, i really don't like today's bullshit kinda music stuff but i still admier Lucky Ali coz' he's a bit diffrent from other musicians and as for KK his Pal album was amazing and Shaan n Sukhbir is also cool singers but my all time fav. is Kishore Kumar n Mohd. Rafi when it comes to hind music, also a great fan of fusion and instrumental music n my fav. isntruments are Shiv Kumar Sharma's Santoor n Ustad Sultan Khan's Sarangi. Yaar, paki band String is also easy and acoustic thier spiderman soundtrack was so touching.
anyway, but when it comes to my fav. kinda music it will always be Pure Rock n my fav. bands are Dire Straits, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd. yaar got great rock stuff if u want then let me know, will be happy to share with u.

Thanks a lot for your offer to share your music collection Jit, appreciate it...but no I do have the albums for some of the above (I really liked Scorpions and Pink Floyd a lot at one time)...It's just that jab us desh mein reh rahe ho jhaan gaadi ke radio mein kisi bhi station pe esi tarah ke gane baj rahe hon hurdum...to dimag mein English songs ka overload ho jaata hai! ;-)

I have grown a huge preference for the Hindi song CD's...

Guys! Let me resuscitate this “silly” thread … :)

I’m sure we are gonna get more opinions about the popular choices here (that too when we have thrilling ‘saregama’ challenge going on….would like to know how many of you are following it…I watch it religiously….there are damn good budding singers..incredible!..I like Shan too as an anchor..)

Well, among the contemporaries my favorites are Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan primarily because of the versatility and novelty they have in their style…
followed my Kavita Krishnamurthy (I love her songs from '1942 a love story') and Abhijeet.

Adnan Sami (my fav. Song: Hum tum mile from ‘shakti’) and Lucky Ali (my fav. Song: Gori teri aankhein from one of his album) are good but its kinda become monotonous….no freshness…all the songs look the same. Depending on my mood sometimes love to hear Jagjit Singh too.

Apart from that I love the ‘sufi style’ songs as well…
My favorite is ‘Lagan laagi tumse mann ki lagan’ from the movie ‘paap’ sung by Rahet Fateh Ali Khan…. marvelous composition --- those who haven’t heard it I would recommend listening at least once…you will know!!

So friends...waiting to hear your favorites ….. :)

O boy Poonam, I don't know what is more incredible; the fact that you resuscitated this long lost (but so near to my heart thread) or the fact that the only programme I myself watch on the Desi Channels is ‘SaReGaMaPa’!!!

I was almost gonna respond to your post about Women Music Directors but then was delighted to see this come up...

Wow, finally someone who identifies with that awesome musical programme too! You are right, it is so good…what singers and what incredible budding and fresh talent India has! [and for sure this ‘Challenge 2005’ is a superbly crafted version!] And to think that they have those wanna be versions in the other channels... (I don't even remember the weird names!)

What is even better is to listen to the older Hindi songs revived thru the fresh new voices and the un-remixed genuine versions of the fresh new talent!
I watch it religiously too! (If I have an evening meeting from work unfortunately then it has to be recorded for sure!) In fact I have missed the last couple of my TaekWonDo classes just because of the new ‘Challenge 2005’ revised date format! (they never had one on Tuesday’s!) There you go Poonam, if no one else but then I am sure you can see just how dedicated I am to it!

I have wondered though why none of the judges are themselves pure Singers though!?! (and I don't mean that of the mentors, cause I think a music director is probably as good if not better as any guru!) Any thoughts?

All the mentors make a great line-up though, and it is very interesting to see the short clips about them grooming the singers in their ‘Gharanas’ [what absolutely delightful inclusion of choice words and titles for the competition rules!] … their own choice exclamations are quite interesting too, don’t you think? (Yalgaar ho! Jai ho!…etc) :D

To tell you the truth, I am not complaining cause I am quite enjoying it now…but really in the episodes when they were choosing the singers for their respective ‘gharanas’ it had left me quite confused with all those very elaborate rules! …But anyways, the competition is revving up quite nicely now! :)

Wow... thats tremendous!

This is one musical programme which is so close to my heart or I should say I’m in love with Saregamapa :) ….can’t miss it at any cost and, as you said, if I do miss it somehow ..I watch the recorded version for sure (the repeat telecast they show on thursday nights ..that is one hour when I could be found superglued to my TV set :D ).

I’ve been watching it religiously since it started I guess. But now this challenge 2005 version has become so thrilling and the way its been crafted is terrific..(you are right…’Gharanas’ and the clips which they show of these mentors or 'gurus' training their shishyas is simply fabulous)

I too was contemplating about the judges as to why didn’t they choose singers. I understand that the idea is to judge the singing capabilities but the judge need not be a singer himself. Anyone who has a refined understanding of music and a complete grasp of the fundamentals of music can be considered as an efficient judge.
On a second thought the other reason could also be the unbiased judgment I guess. What I mean to say is if they select judges who are not directly connected to the Film Industry per se or to be more specific, to these directors/mentors then probably the decisions would be unprejudiced.

So thinking on the similar lines I think it’s a pleasure to see Shiv ji and Hari ji as judges who are so renowned and legendry musicians. I like their comments also which are so true when they say the idea is not to ‘xerox’ but to look for the originality. And yes it would be indeed a delight to listen to old songs in new fresh voices instead of mere personifying the old singers and mimicking their style.

Generally my folks (they are not much of music type) fail to understand my ‘devotion’ for Saregamapa  . So it was so overwhelming to know that you too feel the same about it. Now I believe there is someone who can understand my obsession for Saregamapa... :D Its magical!

Yalgaar ho!!... :)

I hear you! Balki yun kahoo kae, kati right on!!! :)
[fortunately the obsession has somehow rubbed on my folks after watching the non-TV type me (you see, my mom is a hard core Astitva/Kusum/Sindoor etc. etc fan and I will usually walk by passing jokes and/or criticizing them and their melodrama whenever I get a chance! ;) ), so I guess they are intrigued to see me sitting glued to this one programme! It's infectious anyways, and who doesn't like melodies mixed in with some melodrama! LOL! :D]

C'mon guys..write about your favorite music/singers... :)

I am increasingly getting quite impressed by Lucky Ali (he seems to be delivering great sounds in conjuction with the music direction of MM Kareem! If you guys haven't already heard the duo's combination from that earlier movie soundtrack 'Sur' then please do so...and now they came out recently with the music and voice of the movie 'Kasak'!!! Just absolutely smashing!!!)

Also you can hear not only Sunindhi Chauhan in there (both albums) but this superbly talented woman Shreya Ghoshal too! She seems to be taking leaps and bounds with every song...what a super nice voice!

ps. Yo kae Raj Bhai, katee blush sa karva diya es 'Miami kae Goondae' nae! LOL, just kidding!... :D

In my earlier post I had already spoken of hindi film songs. Now that the thread has resurfaced, let me add more names. I just adore folk singers and other regional singers. ;

1. Bhungar Khan and Party....Rajesthani Music
2. Sohan Nath Sapera...Famous Been player from Punjab
3. Mundri Lal.... Tumbi player from Punjab

Oh yes, how could I forget Shreya Ghoshal...Her songs in 'Parineeta' are spectacular (especially 'Piya bole'..thats awesome). She indeed has a flair of fine voice and a novel style.

I liked Lucky Ali in 'sur' ..haven't heard 'kasak' yet... :)

Yes, that music album of Parineeta was quite good too! (Reminds me I have yet to go bother the Indian store guy for that movie's DVD and soon!)

Ek yaar yeh Adnaan Sami ka samagh nahee ataa; I mean I liked some of his very initial albums [remember 'Bheegi-Bheegi Raaton mein...](and he did a good job with music direction of 'Lucky')... but man, he can be quite monotonous with his style at times. On top of that his voice is very strongly 'sleepy' kinds (and almost melodramatically melancholic!) which fortunately-unfortunately does not suit most actors on screen...

As I understand too Mr.Abhijeet (he has a good voice that seems to have been attached to ShahRukh for quite sometime) had some strong words to say against Adnaan in some interview if I remember correct...("bad versions of Pakistani singers coming here" or something... ;) )

I dont have any one favourite in particular. The music and voice that appeal me in some song is good for me. The videos they make these days are awesome.

In initial decades of hindi music the voice of the singer was kept over instrumental sounds (more voice less tabla, guitar etc). Strong lyrics written by 'shayars' were there. Singers had clear throat , they were technically very sound (learning classical, riyaz everyday and stuff)

Now they modify voices (even a person with ordinary voice sounds well, they dont need to have lot of classical training anymore) and on top of that instrumental sound take over the actual voice. Technology is used alot which makes a big difference (it polishes everything so well)

Ok bumping up another od these threads from a 'passionate' field for me: Music!!!

Have you guys been following all the hoopla on TV nowadays with spot-a-minute singers being churned out faster than you can bat an eyelid!?!

There is Indian-Idol (2 now, whew!), Saregampa and Fame Gurukul etc. etc!
While I personally think that 'Saregamapa' have always been putting out classy singers but the recent drama with the gurus and Shishyas and the whole natak with those two Dudes, (Vineet and Debujeet) slinging it out left me with the bad taste in the mouth of it slowly succumbing to the same TV-rating-reality-show pressures!....

Ah well! But then... the beauty of this all is that Sonu Nigam continues to remain the best male singer (ah, don't let those Himesh Reshamiyah's of the world fool you with their flash in the pan popular songs!) even after all those wannabe's being promoted on TV...
Kunal Ganjawallah is good,...but he sings a different genre of songs!

The female filed still remains tightly under the reigns of the existing Kavita Krishnamurthi and Alka Yagnik queens!...

Oh...and let me add this very very funny editorial from one of the newspapers sites:(alking about these very reality shows)-

..."The 'India ki Voice' could soon be heard at the big marriages, anniversaries and celebrations in and around the country. By voting out the best talent before the final, the channel has brought the fate on itself. Talking about marriages and anniversaries, whenever I hear our Indian Idol sing Mohabattein Lutaunga, I feel I am traveling in a train.

By the way, talking about Debojit's win, on a conservative estimate, the poor and struggling people of North East had sent 100 million SMS's making the people involved in making the programme richer by Rs 400 million. Debojit would have got a measly one percent out of it. Talk about equity and fairplay."...

Interesting eh? :D Welcome to the world of Reality shows, SMS's and People voting for their popular stars!

I like Lata, Kishor and Rafi in old ones.
At present Shreya Ghosal is doing gud.Very melodious voice indeed.
I like Lucky Ali too but as said earlier he sounds monotonus. In 'Sur' 'aa bhi ja' and 'Jane kya dhhondhta hai' are really nice. same with Shaan and Adnan.
He sung well in 'kaho na pyar' too. remember 'ek pal ka jeena'
Abhijeet did a great struggle to come to this stage. Listen his album 'Tere bina' really melodious.:)
But in modern time instruments are taking lead on lyrics. Tabla, dhol etc.:D
In quieter time I do listen Jagjeet singh, Mehddi hasan and Ghulam ali.;)

yeah...bt i feel d best song frm dis movie is- INTEZAAR (PAAP movie )
really...gooooooooood !
takes u sumwhere else!Guys!

So far as Hindi film music is concerned, no match of K.L. Sahgal. OLD IS GOLD.

Many popular artists' songs have been duplicated or mixed including Lata and Rafi. But it is impossible to do so with K.L. Sahgal. Reason? Purity - any adultration will automatically be rejected ! Koi uske songs ko kisi doosre ki aawaaz mein record kar ke dikhaao - ho hi nahin sakta !

...I know some of you have mentioned Lata Mangeshkar in your posts...and precisely for that reason I have a very senstive question to ask for the present times:
Do you think she should continue to sing in movies like she has started all over again (the most recent one I can think of being the complete 'Veer-Zara')???...

With all dues respect and she is the greatest female singer our Country has ever produced and will go down in the anals of Indian music history as one (if she is not already there)...BUT, having said that, what do you think on the quality of voice clarity of her's is there in the Veer Zara songs???.............

I am sorry, I am not an expert on this by any stretch of the imagination....but I really think she should quit while she is still ahead and everyone remembers her as the golden voice (rather than starting to sound blurry, heavy and almost like a 'phata Baans'...) of India, She just owe's it to herself!...

Well,

Regarding Punjabi singers Gurdas Mann is all time Great
His every song have meanings.

Regarding Playback singers nobody can be compared to the great Kishore Kumar for his versatile talent.

Do you know guys once he sung a duet himself. The female singer didn't arrived at the specified time and song had to be done. So Kishore Kumar sung the part of female singer as well as male singer in that song.

Simply great !

I find him better as a composer than as a singer.

Yeah, I don’t mind those songs either but how long one can stand that weird nasal tone...Geeee...

God knows if that is his natural style/voice or has been adapted to make his singing unique/different like what Bappi Lahiri did...:D

Disclaimer: I am no expert on the issue.

I always felt Lata got more than what she deserved and Asha, more talented then her got overshadowed.

Asha's voice, I find, is close to divinity and her work alongside the great R D is absolutely mesmerising.

The song sung by her in Ijazat : 'Mera kuchh saman...' or in Umrao Jaan: In Aankhon ki masti ke. Pure bliss.

These days when you can write all the crap and get away with it, lyrics have taken a back stage. Yep there are some like Javed Akhtar and Gulzar -- although I am great fan of the latter, but of late he's become more n more abstract -- but in general lyrcists are writing jst for the sake of it.

With due regards to Sahir, I can't but pronounce that Yogesh is my favorite. His was simple, down to earth use of language in such an artistic way that used to leave the listener craving for more.

Despite the fact Anand was the baby of Gulzar, himself a great poet, the most memorable song of the movie Kahin dur jab din dhal jaaye was written by new comer Yohesh.

Be that Kahiye Suniye from Baato Baaton Mein or Na jaane kyun from Chhoti si baat (wonderful movie as well) the guy was magician with the pen.

The reason that he was undervalued was because he mostly wrote for lesser known and offbeat films.

Salute to the maestro!

I guess bulk of the noise was coming from nose. But since you are so sure that it wasn't nasal, may be it was coming from ''somewhere'' (!) else (pun is very much intended).;)

Anyways that was my humble opinion. I didn't mean to hurt his fans. His success speaks for him. And in of the earlier posts of mine, I made it clear that I am no expert.

As far as Mika is considered, I am not a fan of too many Punju singers save Gurdaas Maan.

More later...
With regards from:

.................................................. .....

The beauty of the best seems even better when it juxtaposed with the worst. The effect of the contrast, as they say.

Since I discussed who were the magicians with the pen in my earlier post, its time to have a look on those who are on the other end of the spectrum.

Hey wait a minute, the list is too long. So let's pick one of them -- my favorite.

And he is legendary P K Mishra. The man who almost killed the genious of A R Rahman with his inimitable and purely atrocious lyrics.

The unlikely partnership started with Roja. Mishra penned a song Rukmani-Rukamni -- wonderful music, crap lyrics. (No he aint wrote Dil hai chota sa)

Perhaps Mishra took the advantage of the fact that Rahman did not know Hindi and the latter subscribed to all the $h*t the former had to offer.

Be that Mukkala Muqabla (or Munh kala muqabala? god knows what!), or Urvashi Urvashi.. he just wrote all the nonsense he could and got away with it.

That Mishra was not just intellectually pervert but sexually as well is proved by the lyrics of one of his songs in Hindustani. Can you recall Telephone Dhun mein hasne wali....? In the later part of the song, the protagonist (Kamal Hasan) sings ''..Teri Galiyon mein koi mard na chhodunga, Aurat bhi na chhodunga..''. (I'll spare no man or woman in your lane. Ahem!)

Did he want to prove he was a bisexual? Holi $h*t!

Thank God Rahman took his Hindi classes well and parted his ways with that pervert -- intellectual and sexual.

In the nineties -- middle part of it (pun intended) -- lyrics with double meaning became the order of the day. Everybody was curious about what really was behind the Choli and guess got a wee bit disappointed to find that its was dil.

Sometimes pun is not even there but it the imagintion of the listener which is running amok. I know one such listener very personally who always take things the other way round -- he's yours truly.

For all those who think old songs were good and devoid of double meaning I must give two examples of two songs:

1."Bas yahi apraadh main har baar karta hun, Aadmi hun aadmi se pyar karta hun..."

From a movie, which I fail to recall, this song was picturised on Manoj Kumar. In my opinion this is a Gay's anthem blatantly discussing homosexuality. How look at the loose translation

The only crime I commit is that I am man and I love (or make love with;) ) another man!

(Now this guy even knows that he is commiting an Apraadh as under art 377 of the IPC, unnatural sex a punishable offence in India.)

Another such song I can recall is from Bobby (1973):
Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay;
Gay re sahiba, pyaar meing sauda nahin.

Needless to say this song is also one of those Brokeback Mountain types. Now is it my imagination that is running amok or I am a homophobe?

A new word -- Fanaa -- appeared in the Bollywood lyricists' lexicon and in no time we have so many songs, and even a movie, with centered aound this word.

I must say I am liking the songs of the movie Fanaa even though there is much of allah, maula in the background.

The song in the recent Katrina-Akshay film Fanaa, Fanaa yeh dil hua Fanaa was pure cat crap. Written just for the sake of it. Like we do when we stumble upon a new word and try to use it. Wakya prayog keejiye sort of stuff.

My favourite fanaa song comes from film Yuva. The one which has Veivek (is the spelling right?) Oberoi and Kareena singing in disc ''Honey do do dil ko fanaa...'' Great song. Youthful, energetic, making one sit up and humm along. Maestro Rehman at his best. Another song from the film ''Anjaana, Anjaani...'' was also good and the cinematography was ultimate (What else do expect from Mani Ratnam). I just love sea and I could feel the waves coming to me when I watched that.

Nice to see you Deepshikha and the others doing the best to keep this thread alive! ;) ..............

I have been listening to and admiring how this woman Shreya Ghoshal is moving with leaps and bounds! It can't be that easy with the veteran stalwarts like Kavita Krishnamurthi and Alka Yagnik in the rat race!....But she seems to be holding her own,
Two of her very-very sensous numbers come to mind right off the bat:

"Jadoo hai nashaa ahi, madhoshian hain....tughko bhula kae ab jaao khaan!..."

"Agar tum mil jaao, zamaana cjhod denge hum!...."

What a voice and what a melody to it!!! Fan ho gaye yaar!...........

Have you heard Kishore Kumar's:
''Dilbar merey, kab tak mujhe, aisey hi tadpao-GAY
Main aag dil mein lagadunga woh ke pal me pighal jaao-Gay''

The way Kishore emphasises on Gaaay, the beautiful song suddenly becomes scary.

The other day I was listening to 'Ya Ali...' from Gangster. The problem with the sufi songs is that many of them are laden with too much of Allah, maula which may give some indigestion to a compulsive anti-muslim like me.

Nevertheless some of them are really good.

Could you racall there used to be Pakistani band called Junoon? Their song 'Sayonee' is one of my all time fav. One found oneself completely absorbed while listening to it. Great music, ever better lyrics!

Bach to 'Ya Ali', while this is a so-so stuff, I would like to summon to your memory 'Roobaroo' No. No the one in RDB but in 'Maqbool', sung by an unassuming Daler Mehndi, its pure bliss for the fans of Sufi music. (I don't like Daler, but that chap has done a really wonderful job in the song. hats off).

Another song in the same movie, though not a sufi one, Jhinmin jhini picturised on tabbu, is a really powerful song. Again Gulzaar at his best.
Great movie, great music.

Off topic: For the mystic touch in the song and Cheb Mami's inmitable voice besides Sting's trademark abstract lyrics and a phantasmagoric video, Desert Rose is my all time favourite. Can't describe the feeling when I listen to it.

I think we are all over reacting a bit. We must all infact cheer him that despite an acute nasal problem, this chap made it big. Infact he is not just 'naikna' but 'hakla' as well. Haven't you heard that song: A(n), A(n)..Aa(n)siqi mein te(n)ri, j(n) j(n).... jaa(n)eygi jaan me(n)ri...

Love or hate this Reshamiya guy, he is still somehow managing to churn out popular music and hit songs, ....gotta give him that!............

As to that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan comparison contrversy; he apparently was not comparing himself but seemed like trying to get all those people off his bandwagon on the whole nasal singing issue! Basically pointing out that the big paki dude did it too, and people accepted it in his genre........no probs with that argument!

By the way talking about Paki singers; how many of you know about Abhijeet (nahee, Indian Idol wala Abhijit Sawant nahee yaar, but that veteran Shah Rukh regular playback singer!) going on record saying that we need to stop supporting all these Paki singers when there is no dearth of talent right here in India (apparently reffering to the fat dude Adnaan Sami!).....

Can’t believe it! Geographical segregation/discrimination in art! I would support any good music, be it from any part of the world.

Interestingly, I'm listening to a nice number as I write, its by Himesh Reshamiya again goes like "Ghoomer rae" sung by Sunidhi and KK, kind of very raw and "rajasthani folkish" kind of music, apt for a traditinal dance style. Impressive!

...Hmmm, yeah well but then think of it in the context of our Indian Movies etc. kinda artform being banned completely in Pakistan and this Abhijeet controversy pleading more exposure and support for our own kalakars comes into a much better perspective and quite valid argument I must say!

Hmmm..I’m kind of alien to this entire saga of Ahijeet controversy. Must admit my ignorance on this...:o

But in Pakistan too there are millions of Indian movies lovers irrespective of the official ban. Sometime back, blanking out on the names etc., a Paki actress played a role in a Bollywood movie (a flop though), that was an awesome step but I know its kind of unrealistic dream to promote the ties between the two countries but again isn’t it great that still we have this kind of harmony (cultural/artistic) between the common people in the two countries who are not politically conditioned and appreciate any good art..:)

Pakistan ki mitti kuchh baat to hai. It churns out great singers and musicians with a consistency as uncanny as that of producing terrorists. Be that Nurjahan -- although she opted Paksitan -- or later Ghulam Ali and Mehndi Hasan, Nusrat. Of late the rock band Junoon, Strings and now 'Jal' -- they are all class apart. I think they could have given the bollywood musicians and singers a run for their money, if they had a thriving film industry like ours.

PS: And they experiment too: The sutta song by Karachi-based Zeest band is a now rage and an anthem for all smokers!

...Okay guys, returning to this thread after a long time.... precisely because there was nothing much to add or actually going on out there to get excited about in terms of the music scene (especially after the Reshamiya mania! Heh! Heh! .....tera tera...teraaa...gurrooooor...ahem, never mind!)

But then here I am finally excited to write about something really good:

Have you guys heard the soundtrack for the movie 'Gangster'??? [a Emraan Hashmi and Shiny Ahuja starring movie I think]....Wooohoooo! The soundtrack is justtttt simplyyyyyyy awwwwesome guys!!!....If not already heard it yet, I recommend getting you paws on this movie's soundtrack CD right away!!!.....

All the songs are great, but the first two are simply mind blowing........(no no, no ever present Himesh crooning in this one  This one is by the veteran music director Pritam)
Well for starters there is this,'Tu hi mera Shab hai...' by the cool singer KK, and is simply superb!....What a song, believe me it is so infectious and good that you would be humming along in no time! It is bound to top the charts in no time at all!
Close on it heels come this amazing composition of a Hindi-soft-rock-ballad sorta song; by a Bangladeshi singer James! Called 'Bheegi- Bheegi' ....man, this one just blew me away with the guy's powerful singing (and it's earthy voice quality) ....and interestingly those of you who loved those western rock ballads for example by the group 'Scorpions' in the late 80's/early 90's would be immediately pulled to this song... except the song is in good ol' Hindi soft rock style! Making it doubly great!!!

Then there are some other very-very good songs in the album, but then only heard to be simply believed! Don't take my word for it....and come back here and tell me if you didn't like it.... I shall eat my online words! ;)

ya- all songs r good:)

----------------------------------------------------------

now cumin 2 d original topic!!
well, i never cud get myself 2 like these indian singers with shrill, sharp n ultra-feminine(kiddish:o ) voices- shreya ghoshal, kavita r good examples!

western singers r good, with their husky voices!
(of course never goin overboard wid it till its tuff 2 decide whether d singer is male- like CHER;) )

Sum indian female singers worth listenin 2 r- ASHA, ALISHA CHINOY, N sumtimes LATA too:)
but poor soul ASHA- mostly ends songs wid bad lyrics n music!

n one f gr8 songs i enjoy listenin 2- ' AAO HUZUR TUMKO....'

------------------------------------------------------

His recent song- 'TUM DIL MEIN- ...AHISTA AHISTA' is a delight 2 listen!:) ( remix version)
it wl top d charts!
giv it a try once, if u dont like in d beginning- listen 2 it for 3-4 times, n i bet my bottom dollar dat u r gonna surely like it in the 5th time!:)

the instruments bein played r so overpowerin dat u wl have a brief respite frm his voice( in case u loathe it!);)

The music and songs of the soundtrack of the movie 'Corporate' is quite good!

Specially the Kailash Kher's,'Kyun tadapta hai tu bandae, jaldi hi badlega manzar! Jhaank le tu ek dafa bus, dil se apnae dil kae ander!
O sikander, sikander...O sikander!'....Nice!

Talking about very good vocal cords (after all that is what the thread is about now, isn't it?);
Has anyone heard closely the singing of this dame by the name of, Sonu Kakkar??? (remember the remix female voice on 'Baabuujee, zara dheeere chalo....'?)

She has got this very earthy kinda amazing quality to her voice! [And was watching her interview on Zee or something the other day, what a stunner too!]....

SANJAY DUTT cudnt hv looked older!
story line cudnt get more sluggish!
music cudnt hv been more mindless!
even dat CIRUIT chap was made 2 cry like preppies!!!:o

i was up in arms- expectin dis movie to b at par wid d earlier(MBBS) one (mind u- at par..nt excelling!), n expexted it to b a 'COMEDY' ,, bt alas! it turned out depressively saddening, filled wid extended emotional scenes.
MBBS was hilarious- a riot! n this is over-hyped
watchin it was a real 'effort' !!

VIDYA BALAN came 2 sort-of rescue! she looked charming- bt then- she was far amazing in PARINEETA

In contrast to the trend of sequels in Bollywood this one stands out. The sequel, though was not exactly a sequel, managed to outsmart and outwit the first part.

Extremely well directed
Sanjay Dutt, notwithstanding aging, did terrific job
Circuit, overshadows Munnabhai at times, with his witty lines
Music, some numbers misplaced, mindblowing anyways
Vidya Balan, do I need to say anything? Wow, smile , the wardrobe…awesome (Hey Deeps, comparison with Parineeta is not justified, can’t compare orange with apples.. )
Well, last but not the least; Gandhi too was made to do some peppy talks, unconventional, huh...;) ??(I wonder how come this escaped the wrath of Gandhians…:D ...well , what to say!!)

Loved the movie, and if it failed to tickle your funny bone, I’m afraid; mamoo, you might not have one…:p ;) :D
