Dear Friends,

After working in Cancer Hospital at AIIMS, New Delhi for 20 years and knwoing the plight of patients coming from Roral belts of Haryana and UP, I realised what it takes for an average farmer family to get its patient treated. Often they give up treatment for want of resources..don't have money left even to meet travel needs.

I have decided to build a Cancer Hospital near Shamli, Distt. Muzaffar Nagar. I have acquired two acres of land for this purpose and plan to start the construction by year end. I know the project is very expensive to execute and often even govt fails to accomplish the task, but with God's grace I am sure I will make it. I wish to use all the principles of Gandhian way of life to run the hospital and provide most modern treatment to all those who will need it...

Thank you very much Sweet. It is heartening to read your response. Let me share something with you here. Most of the doctors coming from rural areas do not wish to work in rural areas. The reasons are many ofcourse like lack of infrastructure, schooling for their kids and many more...but question arises, who will creat the infrastucture for them? This is egg and chicken story..My own wife is a Sr Gynaecologist and elder daughter also a medico and neither is willing to spend a day every week in rural areas....But this does not distract me from my responsibility towards society. Some one has to do it and why can't that some one be me??? After seeing whole world many times over I reached to the conclusion that unless our roots are healthy, the branches can not be healthy.. does not matter how great we are in far away land... If Bill Gates finds India worth investing, surely we jats must rethink abandoning our roots in villages.. Any way I am on it...I am very clear where the future is...

Hi Sweet
Donot make people sitting abroad as a soft target for not doing much. How many of you living in india do much help. I think Mr Rajendar ji has come with an idea ,which still need to be implemented. Helping part comes ones the project start. You can only give encouragement when some is thinking of doing some thing good. Most of the good thought end up in mind only becuase of the lack of encouragement whether by parents, society, or friends. When the help is needed in another from . i will provide that too.
As Mr Rajendar as has Many doctor donot opt to work in rural area once they graduate and i would like to see ur decision once u graduate.
So Stop critizing other people and DO YOUR PART FIRST

it is very easy to criticize others and very difficult to look into urself.why don't u look into urself before u blame other people.i find it very strange that instead of telling u so many times by other members to reveal ur name or identity u r not doing that one.are u ashamed of calling urself jat if not then why don't u post ur mails by ur name only and why it is sweet all the time.i mean to say it looks funny so if u don't mind culd we expect that u will write from ur original name so that atleast we know that u r guy or a gal.

Congrats Rajendra Ji for taking such a giant step!
Since, its aimed at poor rural jats (but I assume ppl from all over India will come if its a success), I dont expect that they will pay for the expensive services. So, can you share your thoughts on how u r going to fund it and run it?
2 well known such initiatives that come to my mind are that by Sunil Dutt and Imran Khan. Both needed huge grants from govt and funds from well connected friends apart from personal resources. Imrans hospital is still struggling even with huge donations from all over the world and voulantry work by many doctors. If you can share some more info abt ur vision and some hard facts like when, how and who can voulanteer, what work needs to be done and whats been taken care of and where u need help, how can we donate etc.

Does ur effort has a web site ? Its a great way to get updated info and let the word out. Many more ppl other than jats too may be interested in sharing your burden.

Apart from curing the disease, its also important to inform ppl abt healthy living. Not only no drugs, paan, bidi, daru etc but also abt clean environment, how to handle chemicals in farm, etc. The hospital can be the center for such education among the surrounding rural area.

good luck!

Hi Anil,

I subscribe to the policy that everyone can pay for the services rendered. The payment need not always be in terms of cash. It can be in kind. The kind in case of this hospital would be service for the service in case of people who can not afford. If really a poor farmer comes for treatment, I would expect his able son/ brother or any other relative to maintain the garden of the hospital in return for the treatment we do for his father. Anyone who can not afford to pay, will have to contribute towards the manual jobs in hospital. Such methods of charging are possible in rural area..If some one is not willing to contribue even his labour..I have many other noble ideas of keeping the costs low..would share as we progress...Right now my focus is onto the building construction.. Also I want to get involed College boys part time for clerical jobs..This would give them some pocket money and experience as well.. I would be conducting some paramedical and other courses as well as we get stability...Going with a begging bowl will be my last resort and I would never do it. There is a difference between Mr Imran Khan and me..I know what are the tricks of this trade and what all is really necessary for effective treatment..people like Imran Khan end up spending 80% of their money on equipments which are required only in 20% of the cases..I would prefer to send such cases to AIIMS...My aim is to use my 20% resources to treat 80% of the cases and not otherway round..Anyway, there will be some interesting experiments in economics at this centre..Let us see how things go...I am keeping my fingers crossed. As of now, all I know is that the people need this facility very badly and some one has to do it..I am just trying my best to be that some one..

Dear Rajendra Ji,

Many Congratulations on this great work.

As VJ Kharub said there are a very few people who have the guts to undertake such a mission for the good of others. It is very easy to give advice and wish for the success of any assignment. But what is matter, it is the initiatives and very few people here who are willing to take the action and devote his time in the service of society rather than personal life.

In the rural area, the big problem is that the people don’t take the illness seriously. First they just try the less qualified local doctor medicine and when it is too late they go to the good doctor when it is too late. I have seen 3 cases around myself where they suffered serious illness and did not consult a qualified doctor.

In the end they spend more money what they have saved consulting a less qualified local doctor. Definitely the poorness, ignorant and money plays a big role. May be I do the same what you did………

I extend my full support to you and offer to help you in this cause where ever I can do.

Many thanks to each one of you. Building and running a Cancer hospital is extremely difficult task. However, someone needs to do it.. We can not follow the convenetional models in rural India as costs would be just prohibitive. I would be experimenting with hosts of cost cutting ideas to build and run this hospital..Let us see how far it would work out...I have very strong conviction that the ideas would not only work, they would produce better results. Who knows, some day our model may be adopted by WHO ...

Cancer among farmers is rising globally. A simple google search would open the eyes of anyone. As populations increase, demand on food supply will increase. Occupational hazards in farming need very close watch. Aim of this Cancer Centre would be to focus on the cancer among farmers and come out with preventive education in addition to the treatment. Often we talk of AIDS becoming epidemic and ignore other diseases. During my career I have seen manifold rise of cancer among farmers from western UP, Haryana and Punjab. When there are pressure groups for breast cancer in urban India, nothing of the sort exists for farmers. At this centre we will work to raise awareness among farmers not only in India but Internationally... This however, does not mean that we will shut the doors of this hospital to others.

I would firstly like to appreciate the guts and the responsibility towards the society of Mr Rajenderji.
A heartfelt congratulations Sir,

I am in Bangalore but we have a handful of Jat friends here who will get together to do whatever possible . Lets look at the reality as mentioned by many above that we definitely need funds. It is not possible for some individual to go and make a hospital on his own.We got to join hands to get it done .. So I appeal to all the people across the country and the globe that they all contribute towards the cause.

I am not sure if it’s a good idea but if we could have a place where we could submit our contributions. Let me tell something, at times we feel that a little contribution of mine is not going to make any difference, but it will surely do. When we can do it for Tsunami, Gujrat Quake, why not now.it is equally important .So lets start collecting and make this dream a successful reality.

Sir can we have some place where we can drop in our contributions.

Kindly advise ….

Dear Vinod,

Really appreciate your feelings. I know, we would need large amounts of funds and no individual is resourceful enough to run such hospitals alone. However, let me prove my commitment first by putting my own resources, which include my savings, my future earnings and my other professional skills. Let people feel that I am truely committed to the cause and then decide if I deserve their support to provide them the best in the world. Till such time all I need is your good wishes and blessings.

Dear Rajendra Ji,
Congratulations and best wishes for embarking on this much-needed and ambitious endeavor. As you pointed out, this project can be a model for cost-effective, community-based medicine, which is what we need in the Indian context if we are to make health care accessible to all and not just a handful of wealthy people. As it will probably be a while before clinical services can be offered, I am wondering if you have any plans, for the interim, of designing and implementing outreach and education efforts which can help people avoid/minimize exposure to carcinogens and environmental hazards, and take precautionary measures. I will be very interested in working and contributing to such efforts--most likely conceptually, but in other ways as well. Maybe a pilot-scale effort can be organized which can help improve our understanding of the magnitude of the problem and its demographic characteristics, etc. I wonder if there are any epidemiological studies done in the region which can provide a good starting point for these efforts?

Dear Neeraj,
My plan is to start the cancer prevention education programmes by the year end. There are lots of epidemiological studies on cancer among american farmers. There is one report on Punjab farmers as well. However, there is no study on farmers from rest of the India. We will be establishing a population based cancer registry at this hospital. Major efforts will be on prevetive aspects and then on early detection which are most cost effective ways to deal with the problem. One thing is almost certain that the cancer among farmers is increasing at alarming rate. Use of fertilizers, pesicides and presence of heavy metals in deep bore wells is a major contributor to this. combination of smoking and alcohol is another factor. Systematic studies are required to analyse the problem. I have many plans. Let us see how far we succeed in addressing the issue. We will be starting news letter in hindi on cancer education which will be freely distributed to all panchayats and schools in rural area. Personally I will cover 3-4 villages every week to spread the message. Whole process should take momentum by the middle of next year when I move back to India.

Phuphaji,

Cancer in our farming community is gaining serious proportions and a short stay in one of our villages should be enough for anyone to grasp the nature of the beast you've aimed to tackle. Your pioneering effort surely has identified the need of this hour. Also, I see this as a 'first' in truly understanding the health care needs of our rural communities. We could do with many more 'firsts' to address needs of our rural/farming community.
What makes your effort all the more inspiring is that this has forced each one of us to wake up and think about our broader goals in our life. And that, I feel, is the beginning of something much bigger. Like JFK once said,"Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country?" Some of us, the properous sons & daughters of India, but living abroad for our own selfish interests, need to answer this question. It is truly inpspiring to see that you've answered this; and have indeed answered it supremely well. Whatever happens from here on will, I believe, be judged trivial.
