Hello fellow members,

Reading this letter on the net, I thought, our young talent working at call centres might have to brace themselves up against a new kind of apartheid.

Call centers in India? Businesses are doing it

Thank you for illuminating in a recent article a local issue that has national implications ["In outsourcing, Capital One sacrificed good
employees," May 7]. Just as Capital One is doing, many other companies are
choosing outsourcing as another way of boosting their stock price.

Public Broadcasting Service's "Frontline" reported on the trend for India to become the "call center capital of the world" several years ago. This translates into more American jobs going overseas in the name of globalization.

Indian nationals are given American-sounding names and speech lessons to try to eliminate their accents. So far, I have spoken to representatives from AT&T Corp., JCPenney and MBNA, all of which maintain Indian call centers.

The next time you receive or make such a call and you hear that unmistakable Indian accent, simply ask, are you a U.S. citizen? Let
management get the message that American consumers deserve to be served by American citizens.

Thanks again for giving attention to a troubling business practice done in the name of profits.
