Our Correspondent

Panipat, March 25
A Dalit youth was shot dead for his alleged affairs with an upper caste girl in Azad Nagar colony here today. Naresh (22), was shot twice, with the country-made pistol by the girl’s uncle Jai Bhagwan. Later Naresh’s body was cut into pieces with sharp-edged weapon and thrown in the colony.

The incident took place when Naresh went to meet a Jat girl at her residence in Azad Nagar colony. The police said Naresh had an affair with the girl for many years. She lived in the same locality. Parents of the girl were against their marriage. They had also warned Naresh, who stayed alone, to shift to other place. Naresh tried to elope with the girl a few months ago. But the girl’s family caught them. Thereafter they had asked Naresh to leave the colony. Naresh had sold his house in the locality and left for Karnal. Meanwhile her parents married the girl in her caste.

Even then Naresh had tried meet the girl. Even on the Holi festival, Naresh came to Azad Nagar colony to meet the girl. It led to a fight between him and girl’s relatives.

After getting the news that the girl had come to her parent’s house yesterday here, Naresh who had been staying with a relative in Brass village in Karnal also came to the city yesterday. Naresh called the girl out and expressed desire to meet her.

Naresh was murdered when he was going to meet the girl at her residence. The girl’s Uncle Jai Bhagwan caught him near the Railway line. Naresh was shot in the face and in the stomach and later his body was cut into pieces. The police has arrested Jai Bhagwan. The body was sent for a postmortem examination at the PGI, Rohtak

It's a tragic event and the killing should be condemned.there is no justification for such criminal acts-at least not in the name of caste and religion.i have heard similar stories in past where these so called ''honour killings'' have taken place.usually such acts are by-products of ignorant, illiterate and arrogant psychopathic tendencies in usually socioeconomocally backward communities and do not do anything to help the cause/image of the community.Jats ,like every other group have to give up the rigid, dogmatic, narrow minded attitudes and violent expressions ,if they want to survive successfully in today's world.gone are the days of physical might and arrogant pride.

Manoj what are you talking about? Once the girl was married off didnt this guy need to back off especially if he really cared for her. Im not condoning murder but on the face of it the girl did not runaway with him before her marriage, so obviously there was even a limit on her regard for him. So why this breast beating over this fellow being dealt with extreme prejudice. There are significant social issues here. Surely the community and her family have some stake in her well being, She is a Jat Girl and a very precious speciesand not some live stock in an animal husbandry programme. As usual the coverage by the 'Mandalised media" appears to be selective in its coverage of the event and its background. It is certainly tragic that a youngster should have lost his life in this violent way, but by all accounts this was a very pushy guy and the Jats God knows are not a people to be easily pushed around without a serious downside.

amit, let's look at the alternative scenario.if the family of the girl had reported to the police after the boy had come back, the issue could have been resolved without such consequences.now the uncle who killed will languish in the prison for life.and given the structure and traditons of society family still ended up in controversy.i agree that self respect is important but so is respect for life and law of the land.we need to learn to restrain our impulses and humble our egos to channelize the energy in more constructive pursuits.such honour killings never bring long term hapiness to anybody's life /family.and praising or supporting such acts only helps to perpetuate them further.
best wishes
