Variations of DAHIYA Surname

Dahiya has got many variations. In Haryana it is written mostly as DAHIYA. I have got relations in this gotra in Rajasthan who write as DAIYA. In a thread on Jats in Ukraine Mr. RK Sehrawat indicated that there are DAHIYAs in Russia and Ukraine but they write it differently. I tried to search about DAHIYAs with different variations on MY FAMILY PEOPLE FINDER website with URL address

2. DAHIA: - There are 6 DAHIAs on this site search with English first names.

3. DAIYAN: - There are 16 DAIYANs on this site search with Muslim first names.

4. DAIYA: - There are 49 DAIYAs on this site search. Out of these 42 are with Hindu first names and rest with Muslim or English first names.
A further research may help in finding links with them and researching the history of Jats.

originally Dahiya got rehabilated themeselves from a village in Rajasthaan near Alwar to Rohtak side ( Sonepat ) and this migration took place around war of Tariieen ( 1197 A.D. -- VOhi Bandee Raja jiskey kavi ka famous tha paarmaan.. Chaar bans, cahubees gaaz or aanguul aasth parman,, ittey door Gauri hai or mat chuke tu chauhan ... )

Interesting you say Alwar.

Alwar is considered Ahirwal (part of Ahir land)

According to Joon, Dahiya is also a Haryanvi Ahir gotra.

Geographer Strabo applied the comprehensive name Scythian to the Sakas, Dahae, and Massagetae. He states:

“Now the greater part of the Scythians, beginning at the Caspian Sea, are called Daae, but those who are situated more to the east are called Massagetae and Sacae, whereas all the rest are given the general name of Scythians, though each people is given a separate name. They are all for the most part nomads [Jones 1928, 5: 261].”

In his Guide to Taxila, Marshall, the former Director-General of Archaeology of India, says the following about the Sakian invaders of India:

“Known to the western world under the comprehensive name of Scythians, to the Indians as Sakas, and to the Chinese as Sai or Sai-wang, these invaders came principally from the three great tribes of Massagetae, Sacaraucae, and Dahae, whose home at the beginning of the second century B.C. was in the country between the Caspian Sea and Jaxartes river [Marshall 1960, 24].”

The 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica also held this view,

“The predatory tribes of Turan [Turkistan] (e.g., Massagetae) seem to have belonged to the same stock [Iranian]. These tribes are distinguished by the Iranian peasants as Daha (Gr. Daai), “enemies,” “robbers”; by the Persians as Sacae; and by the Greeks generally as Scythians [E.B. 1911, 21: 202].”

Interestingly, Alexander Cunningham, the former Director-General of the Archeological Survey of India, believed that the Dahae of the Greeks and the Dahyu of the Persians were the same word as the colloquial term daku used in India (Indo-English “dacoit”), which literally means “a robber or enemy” (Cunningham 1888, 32). The term must have been one of reproach.

So all in all, I think the Dahiya name or some variant of it can be found in Central Asia.

I do not know exactly where from the word DAHIYA has come from. In north east India the local people use a system of cultivation in which they clear the forest, burn it and do cultivation. After few years when the productivity of area goes down, they select another forest site, clear it and burn. This system of cultivation is called DAHIYA CULTIVATION.
