Siwag, Siyag and Samagh is one and the same sub-caste. H.A. Rose considers Sawag to be a branch of Khokhars. This tiny tribe used to dwell in the area of Mianwali. A chieftain of this clan named Sago migrated from the area of Hajipur in Dera Gazhikhan and settled Eastern side of the River Sindh. He was ordered by a Baluch ruled to capture a lion. Having reined in the lion, he was named Singh Waag (The Rein of the Lion) which turned into Siwag in due course of time. It seems to be a myth. Some of Sawags accepted Shia sect of Islam under the influence of Mian Siroyi and later called themselves Mians.
Some of them were driven by Moslems to Ghaggar Rivulet in South Malwa. Some of them crossed Ghaggar to settle towards Sirsa, Hisar, Rohtak and Gurgaon. Some of them went towards Meerut and Muzaffarnagar while most of them settled in the area of Bikaner. In Suhi area of Bikaner, Sawags once had a democratic rule. Chaukha Siyag was their king. Siyag kings had their capital at Kot Khokhar in Mewar. Biragna and Dhiragna were their famous kings. The village of Chautala in haryana is a well know village belonging to Siyags. Former Indian Deputy Prime Minister, Late Chaudhari Devi Lal and his son, present Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala are Siyag Jatts. Ram Sarup Joon writes in his book Jaat Itehaas that Siyag Republic existed even during the period of Mahabharat. Col James Todd has also mentioned that Hayers, Bhullats and Siyags were settled near the Sir River in central Asia. Sawags have 25 of their villages in the area of Bikaner. In Punjab, Sawag Jatts are found in large numbers in the areas of Abohar, Mukatsar, Bathinda and Mansa. Sadhu Sadda Ram, who penned famous verse-stories of Sohni Mahiwal and Sassi Pannu, was a Sawag jatt. Sawag Jatts are found both among Hindus as well as Sikhs. They are very few in numbers in Punjab. This is an important sub-caste in Haryana.
