Bhai Sukhbir, now what is left in covering hockey on field ? Now hockey is covered in newspapers only, not because of performance on the field but the eccentric behaviour of hockey bosses especially KPS Gill and Jyothi Kumarans who have made IHF their personal fiefdom and spoiled the game of hockey. It is not that our people have more love with cricket and no love for hockey. What makes hockey lag behind is that it does not generate the kind of money cricket generates. Hence, good players are not coming to hockey and it has failed to remain as attractive a game as it used to be during Ashok and Govinda's time. It is a pity that today's youth can churn out even the statistics of Ranji players while they are totally ignorant as to who Balbir, Ashok, Govinda, Harcharan Philips, Shahid, Zafar etc. were.

Hi Sukhbir,
Just happened to stumble on this post and, boy, was I pleasantly surprised and proud. Well the reason is I actually pretty much sowed the seeds of PHL, watered it and nursed it to fruition and it is such a joy to see someone like you who, unlike me, is not connnected with ESPN STAR Sports or PHL and yet feels about it just as passionately.

The money will take years. We forget the many decades that cricket existed without the cricketers making anything more than a basic, decent living. We are trying to make hockey snazzy, in-with-the-times, cool, hip - whatever it takes to make it marketable once again. Hopefully this will all feed back into the system and bring back the talent the game so badly requires and return India to its glory days. It isn't all charity of course - as a company hopefully we will make some money at some stage too.

Sehrawat ji, you may or may not be right in blaming Jothi and KPS Gill, but having been so close to the whole thing, this much I can say - without these two gents PHL wouldn't have been a reality. Honestly - they had no personal gains to make in the whole thing. Call it our success in convicing them that it was a good idea. Call it their own innate conviction. Whatever it was, they have provided all the support we needed. Believe me, for something as radical as PHL, that support (and some measure of absolute power) is CRITICAL.

Keep watching! We hope to have the 3rd edition next year as a bigger, better tournament and hope to have 2 months of world-class hockey in at least 2 centres in India.

Thanks for your support - we Jats have always been in the heartland of Hockey support and if we don't help this game, who else will?!

BTW - great game today in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup! India crushed South Korea 3-0 in a pressure game where they never let South Korea look dangerous (except the last 15 minutes perhaps). Was a pressure game because if Korea had won it, India would have pretty much been out of the tournament. India's through to the semis with this. Hopefully today's brilliant form will continue!
