Respected Members,
While listening to raaganis http://www.haryanavimusic.com, I tried to find some information about the stories they are singing about and found that there is very little information available on internet. When I was young my DADA used to tell me most of them (like Raja Harishchandra, Puranmal, Janni Choor) but its been a long time since I heard any of those stories and wanted to refresh my memory again.

Does anyone knows any webpage which has most of these stories? Should we have a section here in jatland where people who knows the stories could post them?

Regards
Rajdeep Singh

Rajdeep Ji,

You are right that too little is available on the internet - related to this topic.

I have a very interesting book on these Raagnis and Stories. I often post at Jatland from this book.

I have recently contacted the compiler of this book (Ch. Mahendra Singh - ex Pradhan of our village) for some more material/resources on this great culture of ours. Ch. Mahendra has been publishing these books from last 6 years (once in every 2 years) and it's really a very great work for Jats.

If I can be of some help - then please tell me.

Thanks

Shailendra

Bhai Saahab,

The name of the book is "Gyaan Hi Gyaan".

It was published by Mahendra Ji for free distribution in our own and nearby villages and libraries.

I can try to find - if any extra copy is available with Pradhan Ji or with someone else and send to you by post - if you still ask for it.

Thanks

Shailendra

Shailendra bhi,
Is this book published for free or Mahindra Ji is making money from it? If this is free I would like to translate it and put it on web. but if it is source of income for him we shouldn't do that.
Anyway I would love to have a copy of it if it is not too much trouble to you. I will pay for it/postage etc.
Please send me your email and I will send you my address. My email is

srajdeep (SHIFT 2) comcast.net.

Rajdeep bhai,

I can't say, whether Mahendra Ji is making money or not - but it's for sure that he distributed these books for free. He may be doing so for advertising purposes (still not sure!!).

But, only the thing I saw beneficial is that this book is very much useful. It relates us to our culture and tradition & that's important and also a collectible for Jats. It has some 250-260 pages in it!!

I will try to do the needful for you and it's a great idea to publish it on the web.

Regarding postage - that's not a problem (apne Jat bhai ke liye main paise nahin kharch kar sakta kya? - bura mat maanana Rajdeep bhai!!)

Thanks,

Shailendra

I think the project to compile the lyrics of raganees is also very appealing. Is there some documentation on lyrics (word to word, what is being sung)?

If Rathee Jee can get the lyrics also on haryanvimusic.com, it would be great value addition to the materail there. I personally have no idea if they are available.

Rajdeep bhai,

I was just wondering - from last 2-3 days - to photocopy the book for myself and send you the original one. But today itself, I have found a fresh piece of the book.

Actually, Mahendra Ji haven't got a single copy of the same - as it was published 2 years back. On his tips, I went to many homes in our village - and bought to the notice of many villagers - about the need. And it's great - we have found it!! Going to post it tommorrow morning to you.

Mahendra Ji has permitted to translate it and do whatever needful for the community. He said, "Gyaan ki cheejein to failanee chahiye bete".

He told me a story:

Ek baar ek Baba, apne teen chelon ke saath, ek gaon me pahunche. Ek gaon wale ka darwaza khatkhataya aur bole, "bacchha, bahut door se aaye hain, thake hue hain, thoda vishram karne ko jagah milegi?" Gaon wala bola, "Jao, bhago yahaan se, aaye yahan seva aale!!" Baba said, "Basey (settle) raho bacchha".
Went to next door, asked for the same. Uss admi ne unko andar bulakar khana khilaya, khoob sewa ki, raat ko sone ka intezaam kiya. Subah jab Baba chalne lagey, to uss admi ko bole, "Ujdo bacchha".
His all three followers got amazed and asked, "Guruji, jis ne apki bejjati ki, usko aap bole 'basey raho' aur jisne sewa ki, usko apne 'ujadne' ka ashirwad diya?"
Guruji bole, "Bacchha, jo insaan badtameez hai, usko yahin par 'basey' rehna chahiye, kyonki uski kisi ko jaroorat nahin hai - aur jo acchha insaan hai, uski saari duniya ko jaroorat hai, isliye usko 'ujaadne' se mera matlab hai ke doosri jaghon (places) par jaakar baste raho, taaki doosron ka bhi bhala hota rahe".

It was so nice story that I couldn't resist myself to share it here!!

So, Rajdeep bhai, hope you do the needful - so that each and every Jat have access to it's contents. I have contacted one person in the village and he is compiling the Ragnees - on my personal request. If get the chance, will also send you the same.

Mahendra Ji is also working on yet another book and 40% work on it has been completed.

Moreover, Anuj bhai is also right that there should be some compilation of lyrics on Ragnees.

I am a dumb on this aspect (regarding translation or compilation of lyrics) but hope, some of our fellow members could prove to be helpful in this area.

Thanks,

Shailendra

Shailendra Ji,
Thanks for the update. I will try to translate the book as soon as possible and will keep you updates. Once I am done we could ask Nitin to put them on this website so that everyone will have access to them.
I am not too good with raagnis (though I understand them I don't understand everything said in them :-(, so I can't help with the lyrics part). Plus we will need someone who has access to lots of ragnis which I don't have.

Thanks once again for helping out. Also please convay my best regards to Mahendra Ji too for his kind help.

Regards,
Rajdeep Singh

Rajdeep bhai,

Posted the book today :)

Although, it may be a time consuming effort - but hope - I will compile a lot of these Ragnees some day, in their original form.

Thanks
