Hello all,
If interested plz join yahoo group "jat_grads". I am starting this group for all the jat grad student in India, US and else where. It will be a good place to discuss our reseach, issues and know each other.
Frankly speaking, if someone asked me to count the number of Jats I know in Grad schools, I can count them on one hand. I would love to change this.
Hope to see you there,
Babita

Hi Babita.
I have just noticed you are located in Indiana. You must be knowing about Notre Dame Uni. I have done my Masters from Notre Dame, Australia (affiliated to ND US). They always provide an option to go to ND US but that place is dead, I suppose. Couple of my mates were there for a Semester. They didnt enjoy the place (Uni is fine).

Hey Gagan,
I have been to Notre Dame for a conference last year in June. Its actually a very nice university. Amazing lawns and churches. But yes, life there would get a little boring. But I should not be really saying that, i am from Purdue !!!! :((
Ours is just a university town, n we dont even have a downtown !!!
At least ND is in South Ben, which is not that bad. And their Football team is very good, so tht keeps the students pretty busy. The biggest problem, cold !!!! Even in June I had to use a sweater in the evening !!!

Babita,

Have to say, when I first read Indiana at the top of this thread I wrongly presumed you're at IU, Bloomington (since it's so much better known than Purdue in every single way :-) ); no points for guessing where I went for my graduate school. Not a graduate student anymore though, so perhaps not a candidate for your group...

Ha Ha Ha !!
That gave me a good laugh in the morning !!!!
U know deep, when we go to Indy and we see these bunch of guys (weirdo's actually) shouting and all drunk, we say " ohh the bloomingstorien's r here too !!"

And you can still join our group, its for ppl who are abt to become grads, excisting grads and ppl who just graduated, so that a constant flow of information is maintained and we can learn from each other's experience.

Hellloooooo,
Starting a grad jat yahoohgrp is very nice idea. I think it will help in bringing jat grads together and will be good way to get to know each other. But I think it might have been better if even undergrads(in India as well as outside) are also included for several reasons,

1) Since undergrads are potential grads in future and they seek out seniors to gain help and guidance, academically and otherwise too. Especially those who apply for higher edu. from India, they have lots of questions and sometimes it proves very helpful to know someone abroad in the their future Univ.

2) Grads alone can't make community bigger than say 40-50 so more members might be pulled in to keep grp vibrant.

3) Right now only those who know of Jatland might come across this yahoogrp and join which has limited no. of memebers, so it might be better to try to expand it size on personal basis e.g. we can spread the word around in friend circle.... that way even Jatland might see new faces....

4) Actually, Orkut has very nice network of communities, there are communities like Jat World etc (actually I saw lovely faces of some of you there).... but there is no Jat student orkut grp... eeeerrrrr wait a min there is... but it has only one member... actually I just now made one... Jat_student it is called...
http://www.orkut.com/Community.aspx?cmm=3231248
it might be used to increase strength of yahoo-group and increase our personal network. Orkut provide very powerful feature of reaching out to our friends, friends of friends and so on...
Though Orkut doesn't provide as good way of discussion as yahoogrp its features might be used as addition to what we are doing right now.

it was just a thought...

Dear Vinod,
Joining orkut requires an invitation. If you have one, pass me on. You have my email id in the personal message I sent you few days back. I hope all these efforts would work in parallel to increase our interaction.

Dear Nitin,
The growing interest to organize the Jat graduate students in US can well be fulfilled at this very web site. People are forum shy for one or the other reason, and they don’t want themselves attacked or diluted by fun seeking individuals.
But hiding away from the rest of people, who can gain from the exchange of ideas, would not be appropriate. You can include one top priority folder, along with career and education, say Jat graduates, and this same place can witness the issues graduate students face.
Since the ideas of educated mass are much more liberal, something has to be done. The concept of 'culture' as the parameter has to be reevaluated. This cultural fusion is an experiment which we must appreciate as a sensitive society. A highly inclusive approach in contrast to high exclusionary practice is desired to grow our community and not discard the most capable strata. I am sure you can suggest something good in this direction.
Best,
Bharat

Bharat, though your observation sounds interesting I was not aware that
people don't participate in discussions becuz of shyness etc. but since
I am pretty new here I don't know much about nature of discussion
threads. However its true that some people might hesitate to raise
minor concerns regarding grad issues(thinking them as spams) in broad
subject "chapters and Itineraries"... so having different section for
discussion makes sense....

And your comment on culture fusion is, potentially, a subject of very
broad discussion, not only in context of fusion of Jat and western
culture but whole east-west scenario and extent to which it occupies stage
in popular discussion forums shows
1) the sheer gravity of subject(it's also extremely important for our
western counterparts too, as is evident from volume of research done in
this in past two centuries)
2) so called revivilist psyche of modern Indians who are starting to
understand the spirit of ancient culture and how it got bogged down by
historical inevitabilities and what role new generation can play in
direction to bring leverage in its proper place. Articles in sulekha.com is
specific example of overt sign of zeal in youth to bring about change
in way in which east-west fusion should be developed....
3) On lighter note, this fancy topic is getting overused e.g. even in
matrimonials every other has a sentence like "our daughter is perfect
combination of eastern cultural values and western liberal attitude..."
:-)
Thats good. Am not saying anything on that. I think I am digressing.

If I correctly understood you, you meant "exclusion" meaning in line of
not letting-go old cultural practices in face of immerging "new"
liberal society then I think there is other problem looming behind it.
Actually its no longer a problem, these days youth is just too eager to
embrace anything and everything their western benefactorer are generous
enough to give(I meant cultural practices and traits). And I don't need to
give you example of ways in which western culture gets seeped down in
eager and hungry minds.(Anmol could tell you a thing or two regarding this:-) But that is extreme solution of problem of
"exclusion" so now main problem is need to retain the very cultural practices which are disowned becuz they seem to be incompatible with new values, atleast on surface... but not by compromising
any of both... and the quantitative balance in between these two factors is rather a matter of personal inclination... I am sorry if I digressed but as I said its extremely broad topic.....

Good luck guys.
