Dear Friends,
I had been running a hectic schedule for sometime and am back now. Today in the court complex in Delhi where I practice I saw a huge gathering of lawyers, litigants and other non descript people watching the telecast of the cricket match throughout the day. That really got me thinking..how does this keen interest in cricket oblivious to the other important tasks each viewer has to execute during the important business hours relate to the character, attitude and obectivity in life and situations of the common folks in this country.
Well, to begin with cricket is really a game and not a sports for it is one of the most inconsistent activity, the results or the performances of an individual or a team is never consistent and after each match "well match" accusations, counter allegations and reasoning vis a vis individual player fly all over the place and no one can really conclude that it was owing the performance of one particular player that the match was lost. Its the most easiest thing to lay the blame on the next player and the entire objectivity boils down to comments about what could have been done or had the bowling and batting done in a certain fashion. Thats so silly. What is missing from the picture is the accountability for each player. There are 11 of them forming the pack of inconsistents. In a nutshell, cricket symbolises passing the buck devoid of certainty and some of you might now reason that its this uncertainty which is the glory of cricket.
No, thats lack of ability to take initiatives, work hard in other true sports where you practice, sweat it out and perform with consistency. Likewise, what is missing in the lives of a majority of my countrymen is lack of accountability, cutting corners, preferring shortcuts to slogging it out. Just look at the pattern of voting in elections in this country, I know so many people and a majority still gets biased by the bloody caste thing and getting swayed by that they always manage to elect some scoundrel or the other who has exploited the common people.
Likewise, cricket and conduct of common people have a strong corelation which is responsible for which is hard to say.
Being devoid of a sense of responsibility is what both have in common. I believe that the day this stupid craze for cricket diminishes would also see a seachange in the circumstances of this nation and its people. Consistency and being responsible is central to and should be the name of the game be it sports or conduct.
