    Swami Keshwanand

    The Childhood

    Swami Keshwanand (1883-1972) was a great saint, freedom fighter and social reformist of Rajasthan and Punjab in India. He was born at village Magloona in Sikar district of Rajasthan in year 1883 in a poor Dhaka gotra Jat Hindu family. His father’s name was Thakarsi and mother’s name Saran. His childhood name was Birama. Birama did not get the formal primary education, as there was no school in that desert region in those days of British Raj.

    Birama spent his childhood as a shepherd boy. At the age of five years Birama along with family left the village Magloona and moved to nearby city Ratangarh. In Ratangarh his father Thakarsi used to carry Seths (Businessman) of Ratangarh to Delhi on his camel. He lost his father at the age of 7 at Ratangarh in 1890. Birama and his mother moved from here to there in search of fodder for animals and landed at village Kelania in Sri Ganganagar district in 1897.

    The Rajasthan state was heading for the greatest famine of history. There was no vegetation left on the ground. There was no drop of water. All the animals died for want of fodder. People survived on the bark of Khejri trees and seeds of grasses. Even that also became scarce. There was nothing like governance. The ruling Samants were least bothered for the poor people. Birama’s mother Saran could not bear the natural and human calamity and died in year 1899 at village Kelania.

    Education

    The greatest famine of the history, 1899, forced Birama to leave the desert region and moved to Punjab for livelihood. He approached Mahant Kushaldas of udasi sect and expressed willingness to learn Sanskrit. Mahant Kushaldas advised that as a Jat he would not be allowed to learn Sanskrit. Birama became sanyasi (saint) to learn Sanskrit language in 1904. He got education at Sadhu Ashram Fajilka (Punjab). He learnt Hindi, Gurumukhi and Sanskrit languages at the Ashram. In year 1905 on the occasion of Prayag Kumbh Mela Mahatma Hiranandji Avadhut awarded Birama, the title of Swami Keshwanand,.

    The Freedom Fighter

    Swami Keshwanand felt the heat of Jalianwala Bagh Massacre. He started going to the meetings of Arya Samaj and was influenced by its philosophy. He had a strong desire for the upliftment of helpless poor people. He started attending the meetings of congress. He mat Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan at Ahmedabad Adhiveshan of the congress. Pandit Madan Mahan Malviya influenced him. He attended Delhi Adhiveshan of congress chaired by Madan Mahan Malviya in 1919. He joined Indian Independence Movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. For taking part in non-cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi he was imprisoned for two years in Ferozepur (1921-1922). The role of Swami Keshwanand became so important in freedom movement that he was appointed dictator of Ferozepur district in 1930 to conduct the freedom movement in that area. He was again arrested in 1930 but released due to Gandhi-Irvin agreement.

    The Social Reformist

    Swami Keshwanand felt that the knowledge of Hindi language is must to keep the country united and to educate the public about nationality. He started “Vedant Pushp Vatika” library in year 1911 in the Ashram with the support of funds collected in it. In 1912 he started a Sanskrit school in the Ashram. In 1916 he handed over the charge of Ashram to his guru-bhai Shyamdas

    Swami Keshwanand was a great social worker. He always remained associated with the spread of education, social and village upliftment. He was connected with the establishment of Sahitya Sadan, Abohar, Ferozepur district in Punjab (1917-1932). He started his progrrame of spreading knowledge of Hindi with a Hindi-forum in Abohar town. He founded ‘Nagari Pracharini Sabha’ institute at Abohar in 1920 that was renamed as Sahitya Sadan, Abohar.

    He started a press ‘Deepak’ at Abohar in 1933 and published material in Hindi language and got distributed to villagers either free or at a very nominal price. Sahitya Sadan, Abohar developed into an institution comparable with Shantiniketan of Ravindranath Tagore. He organized 30th All India Hindi Sahitya Sammelan at Sahitya Sadan, Abohar in 1941. He was awarded degree of “Sahitya Vachaspati” looking to his services for Hindi in 1942.

    Swami Keshwanand was connected with Gramothan Vidyapith, Sangaria (Rajasthan) (1932-1952). He was made director of Jat School Sangaria in 1932 that was just to close for want of funds. He went from village to village and to the Seths of desert region who were in Calcutta and far off places and collected funds. He became instrumental in starting hundreds of schools in the desert region. The Jat School Sangaria was renamed as Gramothan Vidyapith, Sangaria in 1948. He developed here a beautiful museum with collection of rare documents, ancient items, paintings etc. brought from various places. Large-scale plantations were done in this arid area with the help of people and students of the Institute. Gramothan Vidyapith, Sangaria had become center of inspiration for educationists from India and abroad.

    Swami Keshwanand , an orphan, illiterate, nomadic man who never got formal education in a school was the founder of more than 300 schools, 50 hostels, so many libraries, social service centers and museums. He got 100 books translated from other languages or wrote himself. With the great efforts of 11 years he got published the Book “History of Sikhs” in Hindi in 1954.

    He had deep understanding of society in the desert region. He tried all his life with full devotion to remove social evils like untouchability, child marriage, woman illiteracy, indebt ness, poverty, backwardness, intoxication, dissipation, bad customs etc. An idea about his visionary and logical thoughts can be had from the book he has published- “Maru Bhumi Seva Karya” in Hindi. In this book he has explained the peculiarities of the Desert region, identified the problems and suggested proper solutions.

    Swami Keshwanand, born in a Jat Hindu family, Sadhu of Udasi sect propagated by Srichandji, son of Sikh guru Nanakdevji, was a unique example of communal harmony. He organized celebrations in honour of Sikh, Bisnoi, Namdhari and Jain gurus. Gramothan Vidyapith, Sangaria being adjoining to Pakistan felt the heat of 1947 division of the country. He got admitted the wounded Muslims in hospitals and arranged food and shelter for them.

    Swami Keshwanand was member of Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Allahabad. He was imprisoned several times in satyagraha movements of Mahatma Gandhi. He was presented “Abhinandan Granth” by the chief minister of Rajasthan on March 9,1958. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha of India in 1952 and was re-elected to the House in April, 1958. He remained member of Rajya Sabha till 1964. He died on September 13,1972 at Delhi.

    Department of Posts, Government of India, has issued a commemorative postage stamp on "India's Struggle for Freedom" on Swami Keshwanand on August 15, 1999.

    Mr. Mann,

    Why are you saying all this here, what is the purpose of your reply, why are you using such hedious language and using the words like "Delhi ke Jaaton Ki ....." do you think you are doing your community a favour by putting such hedious language spoken by anyone on this website. Cant you just ignore such BS, rather then taking it further.
    And what do you know about villages of Delhi, and what goes on there. You talk about the mass-upliftment of the Jats, whereas I see you creating a gap between Jats of Delhi and others. Please refrain from such things, and do not try to inflict any sort of gap or divide in Jats, all Jats are same and equal.

    Chaudhari Hari Ram Dhaka - Freedom fighter from Churu

    Chaudhari Hari Ram Dhaka (चौधरी हरिराम ढाका) is Freedom fighter and social worker from Churu district in Rajasthan. He was born on ashadha shukla 10 samvat 1980 (1923 AD) in village Norangsar, tehsil Sujangarh, district Churu, Rajasthan. His father was Shri Ramu Ram Dhaka. He got early education in village Norangsar under guru Tulsi Ram Sharma in his private school. He got education up to 7th standard in Hanuman Gramya Pathshala Salasar. He went to P.C.V. High School Sujangarh for further studies where he was told that as per orders of Maharaja Bikaner, the Jat boys will not be given admission in the School. Thus he did not get admission in Government School. This incidence hurt him a lot.

    In 1943 the freedom movement got strengthened in Bikaner state under Praja Parishad Bikaner, founded by Raghuvar Dayal Goyal, who organized the farmers against oppressions by the Jagirdars. The prominent people of the region who were associated with this organization were:

    * Ram Narayan
    * Chaudhary Kumbha Ram Arya
    * Chaudhari Hanuman Singh Budania, Dudhwa Khara
    * Hans Raj Arya, Bhadra
    * Chaudhari Deep Chand Arya
    * Chaudhari Rupram Maan, Vidyarthi Bhawan Ratangarh
    * Megh Singh Sewda, Kharia
    * Kani Ram, tehsil Sujangarh
    * Chaudhari Buddhram Katewa, Bharatia ki Dhani, Ratangarh
    * Swami Keshwanand, Sangariya
    * Harishchandra Nain, Advocate Ganganagar
    * Swami Chetnanand
    * Swami Nityanand
    * Chaudhari Buddhram Dudi, Sitsar
    * Chaudhari Surta Ram Sewda, Ratangarh

    The home town of Hari Ram Dhaka, Norangsar village, was situated on the tri-junction of Jodhpur, Jaipur and Bikaner States and was influenced by waves of oppression on the farmers by Jagirdars from all the states. Chaudhari Hari Ram Dhaka also felt the heat and decided to join the movement. One night he left the village without the permission of his parents and became underground to take part in the freedom movement. He also decided to impart education to the children of farmers.

    Efforts to impart education to Jat boys

    Chaudhari Rupram Maan and Swami Chetnanand started the education program of Jat farmers in rural areas of Ratangarh tehsil by opening private schools. They appointed Swami Nityanand and Chaudhari Chandgi Ram for this purpose. Swami Chetnanand was born in the family of a Jat farmer and could feel the effect of oppression by Jagirdars. These people remained under ground and collected money to start the private education of Jat boys. Chaudhari Buddhram Katewa of Bharatia ki Dhani, Ratangarh, Chaudhari Buddhram Dudi village Sitsar and Chaudhari Surta Ram Sewda, Ratangarh helped a lot in this campaign. Chaudhari Surta Ram Sewda gave his own land for starting a school and Chaudhari Buddhram Dudi got made a shade on this land to start a school.

    At that time there were about 40-50 Jat boys getting education in Ratangarh town who were mainly from Sihag, Dudi, and Tetarwal Jats of Ratangarh town and rest were from nearby villages like Sangasar, Loonchh, Loha, Chhabri, Kadia, Tidiyasar, Thathawata etc. Most of these boys were from poor families and could not afford education on their own. The only means of funding the private education was through collection of chanda or subscription from the farmers. Jats of Ratangarh and Churu either could not afford or did not give subscription out of fear of the Jagirdars. But the Jats of Ganganagar district were well off and they were not much effected by Jagirdars. They gave handsome amounts for education.

    Chaudhari Hari Ram Dhaka went to Sangariya to get financial help from Swami Keshwanand. Swami Keshwanand appointed him the Manager of Industries Department of Jat High School Sangariya. Megh Singh Sewda also joined this school. Chaudhari Hari Ram Dhaka collected about Rs. 2000/- from the teachers of Jat High School and called Chaudhari Rupram Maan, Vidyarthi Bhawan Ratangarh, to hand over this amount. He then sent Chaudhari Rupram Maan to Advocate Harshchandra Nain at Ganganagar. There was a good subscription at Ganganagar and with this financial assistance Chaudhari Rupram Maan and Swami Chetnanand organized a grand sabha of farmers at Ratangarh in Podaron ka Nohra. Swami Keshwanand and Chaudhari Hari Ram Dhaka also joined this sabha. A number of decisions were taken in this sabha about awakening of the farmers of this area. As decided in this sabha Swami Keshwanand sent Chaudhari Hari Ram Dhaka to Ratangarh to enhance the movement of education and freedom.

    Hari Ram Dhaka and Megh Singh Sewda went from village to village in Churu district and gave momentum to this movement. Tiku Ram Budania, Rupram Maan and Hari Ram Dhaka organized a meeting at village Loha in Ratangarh tehsil. The urban people also came in their support. Mohan Lal Saraswat and Rameswar Pareek from Ratangarh were of great help in the sabha. Jagirdars did their best to disturb the sabha but it continued. It was decided unanimously not to pay the taxes to the Jagirdars and not to obey their orders.

    Leader of the Kangar kand

    The Jagirdars had tried to prevent the farmers from taking part in Loha Sabha. This sabha at Loha village was quite successful. The Jagirdars were frightened about the decisions taken in this sabha. They approached Maharaja Bikaner from whom they obtained the permission to recover the land and other taxes forcefully. The Jagirdars assembled at village Kangar in Ratangarh tehsil in the fort of Gop Singh Jagirdar. They took the Kaimkhanis of Ratangarh also with them. They were all equipped with swords, guns, barchhis, bhalas etc. Here the Jagirdars decided to recover 20 times taxes forcefully. Looking to these preparations of the Jagirdars, the Jat farmers approached Hari Ram Dhaka and Rupram Maan at Ratangarh.

    Hari Ram Dhaka sent Megh Singh, Rupram Maan, Sisram Bhaktopdeshak with the farmers of Kangar to assess the situation at Kangar. They found that the Jagirdars were enjoying drinks and goat meat. They had forcefully snatched goats, sheep, milk, curd etc. from villagers of Kangar. They started doing rape with the village women. Jagirdars dragged the villagers to the fort, beaten them and demanded 20 times taxes. The message spread to nearby villages and Jats also assembled in thousands of number for the counter action. They were also equipped with barchhi, bhala, jeli etc. The situation was very tense. Jats assessed the situation and decided not to have a direct confrontation as it may lead to hundreds of lives on both sides. All farmers consented that they should approach the Bikaner Maharaja to let him know the actual situation. A deputation of 35 agitating farmers was sent to Bikaner under the leadership of Rupram Maan and Megh Singh.

    Hari Ram Dhaka along with seven persons reached Kangar. Chaudhari Surja Ram, Jaisangsar and Ganpat Ram Nai had also come to Kangar the same day. Both were in white khadi clothes and were wearing Gandhi topi. The Syangan Jagirdar, Kishan Singh, attacked them with lathi which broke the head of Surja Ram and one hand of Ganpat Ram. They fell on the ground. Kishan Singh was shouting "kill them". This attack led the revolutionaries to start demonstration against the Jagirdars, shouting slogans for freedom. This was the first demonstration against Jagirdars under leadership of Hari Ram Dhaka at Kangar village. On 30 October 1946 at 10 am, Hari Ram Dhaka along with his associates were arrested and imprisoned in the fort. They were beating them very badly and putting them in a shade full of pala. Muknaram Achra from village Gorisar, Chaudhari Ganpat Ram Jatda from tehsil Churu and Hari Ram Dhaka along with others were put in pala after they fainted out of severe beating. At about 4 am in the morning they heard voices that thousands of Jats had gathered at village Barjangsar and started attacking Jagirdars and that they were reaching Kangar also. This sent ripples of pain amongst the Jagirdars who decided to release the freedom fighters. The revolutionaries were brought before Gop Singh, who was ADC of Bikaner Maharaja. The village Kangar was in Jagir of Gop Singh. Most of the Jagirdars had left the fort on hearing the news of coming of group of revolutionaries. The Kaimkhani of Rtangarh also left the fort of Kangar. The only persons left in the fort were Gop Singh himself along with Ram Singh DSP and his police party. All the revolutionaries had decided not to accept the directions of Gop Singh. At last they put the revolutionaries in a Jeep like cattle and through them away at Ratangarh. Here when they came to senses they found that a group of revolutionaries including Master Deep Chand, Moji Ram Chaudhari Chandgothi, Hans Raj Arya, Bhadra, Gangadatta and Prof Kedar from Ganganagar were approaching them. They were apprised of the incidence of Kangar.

    humdardi to bhaiya maine jab bhi hoti... tab aapki maa k saath aisa hoya hota... aise girre huye logo ko koi support karta hai jo aaurto k khilaaf itne heinous crime mein involve ho... to bahot feel hota hai... aap ek baat bataye... aapki maa k saath koi gang rape kare aur phir aapke gaanv mein neher aur roads ka jaal bichaa deve... to aap aapki maa k saath jo hua usse dekhenge yaa phir neher aur roads ko dekh kar khush hote rehenge?
