AAK – The Magical Medicine
I have earlier presented 3 threads in this forum on three wonder trees (Neem, Peepal and Badd) which have high medicinal value in Ayurvedic system of medicine – a place where all these three huge trees exist together, is called ‘Triveni’. God has blessed India with rare trees, plants and herbs which could give new life to any ailing human being. Unfortunately, our present-day school education does not teach us even a tiny particle of our traditional knowledge of medicine which has been continuing since Vedic times.
One wild plant which is so commonly found all over India and has exceptional medicinal value, is ‘Aak’ which is a small to medium-sized shrub. The generic name of this plant is Calotropis and its two common varieties are Calotropis gigantean and Calotpropis Procera. There is not major difference between the two siblings – the first one has white flowers and the second one, pinkish white. Except for the common notion that this is a poisonous plant which could lead to blindness if its juice (milk) is put in the eyes of a human being, surprisingly, the same plant is used for preparing ayurvedic medicines for treatment of eyes! In our villages, the white liquid (which is called “milk”) of this plant is applied on the strings around a traditional spinning wheel (‘Charkha’) to maintain their flexibility.
Again, the following excerpts have been picked up from the book “Aak” written by late Swami Omanand in his series of books titled “Bharatiya Jaddi-Booti” (published by Haryana Sahitya Sansthan, Gurukul Jhajjar). There is a special page under “WIKI” section of this site for late Swami Omanand, the great Jat leader and a famous Ayurvedic doctor of yesteryears.
On my part, I feel that it is only a small tribute to that great soul – to present a tiny part of his great works to our Jatlanders. Hope all of you would like this thread and make use of its contents for the benefit of the health of your near and dear ones.
