History

बंबई

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है .....बम्बई, (AS, p.600) महाराष्ट्र: सोलवीं सदी तक मुंबई महानगरी छोटे-छोटे सात द्वीपों का समूह मात्र थी. प्राचीन ग्रीक भौगोलिकों ने इसी कारण इस स्थान को हेप्टेनिशिया (Haptenesia) या सप्तद्वीप नाम दिया था. दक्षिण भारतीय नरेश भीमदेव ने 15वीं सदी में महिकवती (वर्तमान महीम) में अपनी राजयसभा की थी.

1534 ई. में पुर्तगालियों ने गुजरात के सुल्तान से मुंबई को छीन लिया. इससे पहले बहादुर शाह ने इस स्थान को राजा भीमदेव के उत्तराधिकारी नगरदेव से प्राप्त किया था. मुंबई में उस समय ढेर, भंडारी तथा आदि निवासियों (कोली आदि जिनके नाम पर वर्तमान कोलाबा प्रसिद्ध है) की विरल बस्तियां थी. पुर्तगालियों ने मुंबई की स्थिति के महत्व को पहचान रखा था और उनके यहां आने पर इसकी व्यापारिक उन्नति प्रारंभ हुई.
