Bhati (भाटी)[1] [2] Bhatti (भाट्टी)/(भट्टी)[3] [4] [5]is Chandravanshi clan name found in Jats. Also found in Rajputs and Muslims in India and Pakistan. They give their name to the Bhattiana and to the Bhattiora tracts, as well as to various places, such as Bhatinda, Bhatner, Pindi Bhattian and possibly the Bhattiāṭ in Chamba. They live in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. [6]. They are found in Gujarat and known as Bhatiya. Bati clan is found in Afghanistan.[7] Bati Jat clan is found in Multan.[8] Bhati (भाती) is a Jat, Arain, Gujar and Rajput clan found in Amritsar, also a Jat and Rajput clan found in Multan.[9] Ram Sarup Joon[10] writes that...About 70 Jat Gotras joined the Gujar force and started calling themselves Gujars. Bhatti is one of them. Bhatiya is a Gotra of the Anjana Jats in Gujarat.

Origin

There was a great poet named Bhatti (भट्टी) in the court of Dharasena IV (धारसेन) . People coming from the side of Bhatinda were called Bahttis.[11]

The branches of Yadu race are: 1. Yadu (Chief Karauli), 2. Bhatti (Chief Jaisalmer), 3. Jareja (Chief Cutch Bhuj), 4. Samecha (Muhammadans in Sind), 5. Madecha, 6. Bidman, 7. Badda, 8. Soha.[12]

According to James Tod[13] Raja Baland had seven sons : Bhatti, Bhupati, Kullar, Jinj, Sarmor, Bhynsrecha, Mangreo.

Raja Bhatti succeeded his father Raja Baland. He conquered fourteen princes, and added their fortunes to his own. Among his effects, he reckoned twenty-four thousand mules laden with treasure ; sixty-thousand horse, and innumerable foot. As soon as he mounted the gadi, he assembled all his forces at Lahore preparatory to the teeka-dour destined against Beerbhan Bhagel, lord of Kanakpur. Beerbhan fell in the battle which ensued, at the head of forty thousand men. With Bhatti, the patronymic was changed, and the tribe thenceforth was distinguished by his name. [14]

Genealogy of Raja Bhatti

Hukum Singh Panwar[16] has given the ancestry of Bharatpur rulers starting from 1. Yadu. Shini is at S.No. 38 and Krishna at S.No. 43 and Vajra at S.No. 46[17]. From S.No. 47 onward we follow James Tod[18].

Bhatti clan people in Central Asia

Some research suggests:

"The Bhattis were originally its own Central Asian tribe, (as documented by Arab writers), and later married with Jats and became Jats. They later became Rajputs, which they claim descent from Lord Krishna. Cunningham expressed the view that they were from Kashmir and their Capital at Gajnipur (Rawalpindi) and they are Indo-Scythians. Incidentally, the town of Bhatinda according to Dhillon was Bhatti–da and became Bhatinda."[19]

Jat clans associated with Bhatti

Bhim Singh Dahiya[20] provides us list of Jat clans who were supporters of the Bhati when they gained political ascendancy. The following Jat clans supported the ascendant clan Bhati and became part of a political confederacy:[21]:

Batho, Bharon, Bloda, Dhokia,Isharwal, Jatai, Khetalan, Khodma, Kohar, Lahar, Makar, Mond, Saharan, Sara....

Pandit Amichandra Sharma [22] has mentioned following Sub divisions of Bhati:

1. Battu, 2. Bheron, 3. Dhola, 4. Isarwal, 5. Jatai, 6. Khetlan, 7. Khodma, 8. Kuhar, 9. Lahar, 10. Makar, 11. Mond, 12. Saran, 13. Vanod,

History

James Todd[23] writes that Bhatti was the exile from Zabulistan, and as usual with the Rajput races on any such event in their annals, his name set aside the more ancient patronymic, Yadu. The Bhattis subdued all the tracts south of the Ghara ; but their power has been greatly circumscribed since the arrival of the Rathors. The Map defines their existing limits, and their annals (Annals of Jaisalmer) will detail their past history.

James Tod writes that Notwithstanding the lapse of eleven hundred years since the expulsion of the Bhattis from the Punjab, and in spite of the revolutions in laws, language, and religion, since the descendants of Salbahan abandoned that region, yet, even to this day, there is abundant testimony in its geographical nomenclature that the Bhattis had dominion there. We have Pindi Bhattia-ca, Bhatti-ca-chak, in the very position where we should look for Salbahanpoor.[24]

Thakur Deshraj[25] suggests that Bhatis were initially Yadavas. When the people were driven away from the fertile lands of Brij, Ghazni, Herat and Punjab, then they came to desert area of Jangladesh. Jangladesh was infertile and there was scarcity of water everywhere in this region. The people had to wander from here to there in search of water and food. These people were known as Bhati. The word Bhati is derived from Hindi word 'Bhatkana'.

Bhatis had come to Jangladesh prior to 4th century when the Buddhism was at peak. Later, when the influence of Buddhism came down and Hindu religion was spreading, Bhatis got divided into two categories namely - 1. Jat Bhati and 2. Rajput Bhati. Third category came into existence, Muslim Bhati, under the influence of Islam.[26]Rajput Bhatis ruled Jaisalmer.

Thakur Deshraj writes that as per the Bard Records of Bhati people - One Chauhan ruler Kodakhokhar had three sons:Maan, Dalla and Desal. They became Jats due to marrying with Jatnis. Their descendants were known by Maan, Dalal and Deshwal. One other Bard tells that Bhati Nekpal had three sons - Nagraj, Āloji and Udal. Udal originated Deshwal and Dalal gotras. Aloji originated - Kundo, Mond, Tod gotras.[27]

Jat Bhatis ruled Bhatner, presently Hanumangarh, and Bhatinda. Bhatner was historically important because it was situated on route of invaders from Central Asia to India. 'Wakaata Jaisalmer' writes that this area was known as Bhatner due to Bhati population in the area. 'Bhar Suthal' Geography tells us that northern part was called Ner and combined this with Bhat, which was proffered by Muslim Bhatis, became Bhatner.[28]

Thakur Deshraj[29] writes with reference to writer Munshi Jwalasahay in 'Wakaye Rajputana' that there are large number of traces of ruins near Hakra river. Village Dhandhusar (धांधूसर) was a well developed city at the time of Invasion of Alexander. It is said that their chieftains had good palaces, people were having number of ponds and sufficient land was left for cattle grazing. They lost their Kingdoms during reign of Akbar, but still they were in possession of large tracts of land. In 18th century Kuhadwas the area was ruled by Kuhad Singh and his son Panne Singh. Later, Bhatis of Kuhadsar were known as Kuhads. Kunwar Panne Singh was a Public Servant of Shekhawati and Kuhad ruler Pannesingh was 15 generations earlier to him. Like Kuhads, the Dular Bhatis also migrated from Punjab and established a small state here. The Bard records tell us they occupied land near Gorir and Singhana.

H.A. Rose[30] writes that Bhati (बहाती), a tribe of Hindus, chiefly interesting as being the ancestors of the Bhattis and the Sidhu Barar Jats, as the following table shows : —

[Fagan—Hissar Gazetteer, pp. 124, 127—129.]

According toH.A. Rose[31] Jat clans derived from Bhatti are: Lahar, Sara, Bharon, Makar, Mond, Kohar, Saharan, Isharwal, Khetalan, Jatai, Khodma, Bloda, Batho and Dhokia.

H.A. Rose writes:[32] Bhatti (भट्टी). The name Bhatti would appear to be unquestionably connected with Bhat, Bhatt, Bhati and Bhatiti, Bhatt bearing the same relation to Bhat as Jatt to Jat, kamm in Punjabi to kācim, etc. As a tribe the Bhattis are of some antiquity, numerous and wide-spread. They give their name to the Bhattiana and to the Bhattiora tracts, as well as to various places, such as Bhatinda, Bhatner, Pindi Bhattian and possibly the Bhattiāṭ in Chamba. Historically the Bhattis first appear to be mentioned in the Tārikh-i-Firoz-shāhi of Shams-i-Siraj Afif.

H.A. Rose writes:[33] On the south-east border of the Punjab the subject population of Bikaner is largely composed of Bhattis, and tradition†† almost always [p.103] carries us back to the ancient city of Bhatner, which lies on the banks of the long since dry Ghaggar, in the territory of that State bordering on Sirsa. But in that tract, which corresponds to the old Bhattiana, the Bhatti is no longer a dominant tribe and the term is loosely applied to any Muhammadan Jat or Rajput from the direction of the Sutlej, as a generic term almost synonymous with Rath or Pachhada.

According to H.A. Rose:[34] The Hissar tradition says that the Battis are of the Jatu family, and that like the Tunwars they trace their origin to remote antiquity. At some distant period, two persons named Bhatti and Sumija are said to have come to this country from Mathura. The latter had no male issue, and his descendants (called Joiyas) live in Sirsa. After some generations the of the family of the former, niinnd Rusalu, became Raja— he had two sens, Dusul and Jaisul. The latter became Raja of Jaisalmer, where his descendants still reign. The former remained in Bhattiana— he had ony one son, named Janra, who had several wives by whom he had 21 sons, whose [p.103]descendants established different tribes, such as the Lakhiwal, Sidhu, and Barar Jats. Janra founded the town of Abohur, naming it after his wife Abho— by this wife he had three sons- Rajpal, Chun and Dhum :— the Wattus are descendants of the first- the Mai Rajputs of the second— and the Nawab of Rania and his family, of the third. Inasmuch as the Bhattis were more numerous than the rest, the country was called Bhattiana. The habits, manners and customs of Bhattis are similar to those of the Tunwars. (Hissar Settlement Report, p. 8, §§ 25, 26.)

Ram Swarup Joon[35] writes...The Bhatti gotra is one of the biggest and a large number of small gotras are its branches. The Rajput royal dynasty of Jaisalmer and the Phulkian Sidhu royal dynasty belong to the Bhatti gotra. They are mostly concentrated around Bhatinda (Punjab). There are two well-known legends about the Bhattis. According to one their ancestors, on being driven out of Ghazni, came to this country. For having settled down in the sandy (Bhatt) soil they come to be known as the Bhattis. According to another legend, which has been accepted by Todd and Cunningham, Mamnenez, The King of Khorasan, drove out King Shal Bahan from Ghazni. He then established his capital at Sialkot. One of his sons was Bhatti Rao and his descendants came to be called Bhattis. However the last ruler of Ghazni is named as Subhag Sen.

History of the Jats, End of Page-74

One can conclude from the above legend that ancestors of the Bhatti gotra, on being driven of Ghazni, came and settled down in the Punjab and their descendants came to be called Bhattis. Maharaja Ranjit Singh (Punjab) also belonged to the same dynasty and King Shahasi Vansh was also from this same gotra. These people are found in large numbers in the Punjab and some of them are found in Pakistan. About 40 other gotras are the sub branches of the Bhattis.

Ram Sarup Joon[36] writes that...The Bhatti Rajputs are a branch of Madrak Jat gotra and are named after Bhatti Rao, son of Gaj, ruler of Gajni. The Bhatti Raja of Jaisalmer later converted to Rajput.
