मावली क्षेत्र के फलीचड़ा गांव की चंदा ने ताइवान में अंतरराष्ट्रीय बालिका दिवस के अवसर पर 6 से 13 अक्टूबर तक चले कार्यक्रम में भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व किया । चंदा ने वहां एशियाई बालिकाओं में भारत की एम्बेसेडर के रूप में बाल विवाह, बालिका शिक्षा आदि मुद्दों पर बात रखते हुए अपने जीवन के संघर्ष के बारे मे बताया । गौरतलब है कि ताइवान की द गार्डन ऑफ होप फाउंडेशन की ओर से एशियन गर्ल कैम्पेन में नेपाल, बांग्लादेश, थाइलैंड, अफगानिस्तान, पाकिस्तान, चीन से एक-एक बालिका को एम्बेसेडर के रूप में चुना गया था ।

Two girls working separately to stop child marriage in their communities in Nepal and India picked up awards at the 3rd Asian Girl Awards in Taipei on October 11, 2015. Bipana Sharma from Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal won the Human Rights prize for her efforts to stop sexual abuse, child marriage and child labor in Nepal.

The other award in Community Development went to Chanda Jat who has helped over 20 girls in rural India go back to school through volunteering with the Vikalp Sansthan organization. Also recognize for her efforts to empower Bangladeshi girls was karate trainer Shopna Sathi from Nari Uddug Kendra (NUK). Things might have been very different for Chanda, who was pulled out of school, stopped from playing sports, and almost married off at the age of 14. Thankfully she was spotted and helped by the Vikalp organization, and now Chanda fights for girls’ rights to education, campaigns against early marriage, teaches girls how to ride a motorbike, and has helped set up volleyball teams in many local villages. Now 18, her dream is to become a volleyball teacher.[1]

Two overseas participants were also lauded for contributions to enhancing women’s status in their respective countries. They are Chanda Jat of India, awarded for advocating abolishment of underage marriage, and Shopna Sathi of Bangladesh, for defending women’s basic rights and political participation.[2]

The 3rd Asian Girl Awards were also presented at the awards ceremony on Sunday. The award for human rights was given to Bipana Sharma from Nepal, while Chanda Jat from India won the award for community development.[3]
