Chhelu Ram
Company Havildar-Major Chhelu Ram (छेलूराम) (Garhwal) (10 May 1905 – 20 April 1943) was a Jat hero, recipient of prestigious Victoria Cross gallantry award, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was 37 years old, and a Company Havildar-Major in the 4/6th Rajputana Rifles, in the Indian Army during World War II when he sacrificed his life in a fierce battle in Tunicia.

Birth and early life
Chhelu Ram was born in Dinod village which is now in Bhiwani district of Haryana state of India. His Father's name was Chaudhary Jairam, a Jat of Garhwal gotra.

Bravery
On the night of 19/20 April 1943 at Djebel Garci, Tunisia, the advance of a battalion of the 5th Indian Infantry Brigade was held up by machine-gun and mortar fire. Company Havildar-Major Chhelu Ram dashed forward with a tommy-gun and killed the occupants of a post and then went to the aid of his company commander who had become a casualty. While doing so, he was himself wounded but taking command of the company, he led them in hand-to-hand fighting. He was again wounded, but continued rallying his men until his last breath.

He displayed exceptional courage on 19 and 20 Apr. 1943 in Greece. He was with the leading company in the attack. Enemy machine guns which were sited on higher ground made further advance impossible. Chhailu Ram took his Tomy Gun, went single handed for the machine guns and silenced them. Advance was resumed. The Company Commander was wounded. He evacuated him after first aid and took command of the company. He also gathered the remnants of the badly mauled Mohammedan company. Ammunition was exhausted. Enemy intensified their attack. Chhailu Ram ordered a bayonet charge and with personal example and constant urging threw out the enemy. He had been wounded earlier. Awarded posthumous VC.[1]

कम्पनी हवलदार-मेजर छेलूराम का जन्म 10 मई 1905 ई० को दिनोद गांव जि० भिवानी के किसान चौधरी जयराम गढवाल गोत्री जाट के घर हुआ। आप 10 मई 1926 को राजपूताना राइफल रेजीमेंट में भरती हुए और द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध में 4 राजपूताना पलटन के साथ युद्ध के मैदान में गये। आपकी पलटन 5 इन्फेन्ट्री ब्रिगेड में शामिल थी। आपकी पलटन ने 19 अप्रैल 1943 की रात्रि को शत्रु के शक्तिशाली मोर्चों पर जो दजेबल गर्सी पहाड़ी (Djbel Garci feature) पर थे, आक्रमण कर दिया। इस युद्ध में सी० एच० एम० छेलूराम ने अद्भुत वीरता, निश्चय और कर्त्तव्य पालन का आदर्श प्रदर्शन किया। शत्रु के मोर्चों की ओर बढ़ते हुए अगली पंक्ति के सैनिक, शत्रु की मशीनगनों के फायर से रुक गये। यह देखकर वीर छेलूराम अपनी टोमीगन लिये हुए शत्रु के प्रचण्ड मशीनगन और मोरटर फायर में से एकदम झपटकर आगे बढ़े और अकेले ने शत्रु के 4 सैनिकों को मारकर यह प्रचण्ड फायर बन्द करा दिया, जिससे आगे को बढ़ना जारी हो गया। जब अगली कम्पनियां शत्रु के मोर्चों के समीप पहुंच चुकी थीं, तब शत्रु ने मशीनगनों और मोरटरों का प्रचण्ड फायर खोल दिया, जिससे कम्पनी कमांडर प्राणघातक घायल हो गया।
सी. एच. एम. छेलूराम ने उस अफसर को एक सुरक्षित स्थान तक पहुंचाया। इस कार्य के दौरान वह स्वयं भी घायल हो गया। तब उसने अपनी कम्पनी की कमान संभाली और उसे शीघ्र संगठित किया। शत्रु ने भी शीघ्रता से भारी जवाबी हमला कर दिया। हाथों-हाथ के इस भयंकर युद्ध में वीर छेलूराम ने एक अद्भुत वीरता दिखाई जो कि बड़ी प्रशंसनीय है। उसने एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान तक झपटकर अपने जवानों को एकत्र किया और चिल्लाकर कहा कि जाटो, पीछे नहीं हटना है, हम सब आगे ही बढ़ेंगे। अपने जवानों को जोश दिलाकर शत्रु के जवाबी हमले को संगीनें मार-मार कर वापिस धकेल दिया। इस हाथों-हाथ युद्ध में वीर छेलूराम प्राणघातक घायल हो गया। उसने अपने को पीछे ले जाने से इन्कार कर दिया और अन्तिम सांस तक अपने जवानों को जोश दिलाता रहा। कुछ देर पश्चात् वह वीरगति को प्राप्त हुआ। वीर छेलूराम के इस तेजस्वी नेतृत्व के कारण हमारे सैनिकों का एक अति आवश्यक स्थान पर कब्जा हो गया।
सी. एच. एम. छेलूराम की मत्यु 19 अप्रैल 1943 की रात्रि के आक्रमण में हो गई और 20 अप्रैल 1943 को ब्रिटिश सरकार ने आपको सर्वोच्च पदक विक्टोरिया क्रॉस (मरणोपरान्त) से सम्मानित किया। भारतीयों तथा जाट जाति को आप पर बड़ा गौरव है।[2]
