Chittorgarh Fort
Chittorgarh District
Government ASI board installed at Chittorgarh fort recognizes Mori clan as a branch of (Jat Gotra) Maurya lineage .

Chittorgarh (चित्तोडगढ) is a historical town and district place in Rajasthan. Its ancient name was Chitrakuta (चित्रकूट) after Chitrangada Mori.

It was founded by Jatri gotra Jats. It was previously known as Jittor. Al-biruni has written its name as Jittor.[1]/Jattaur[2]

History

Ram Swarup Joon[3] writes about...Jatrak or Jattarana: This is also an old gotra. According to "Kautilya's Arthshastra" they fought against Alexander the Great. According to Alberuni this hilly place called Chittor (Jattaur) was the capital of the Jattrana. They have 12 villages in Delhi area. They call themselves descendents of Tur. They have about 80 villages near Bhiwani.

Ram Sarup Joon[4] quotes Alberuni, the eminent historian, who writes that Chittor was governed by Jatrana (Jat) Kings and its old name was 'Jator', where 'Mansarovar' exists in the memory of King Maninder Jatrana. According to the writings of Pandit 14 Sangwan (Jat) Kings again governed Ami Chand Chittor and their capital was in Sarso Jungle.

This resplendent hill fort in Rajasthan covers an area of 700 acres and extends up to 3 kilometers in length. Chittorgarh Fort is perched atop a hillock at an elevation of 180m. This first hill fort of Rajasthan is believed to be erected by Mauryan rulers during the 7th century AD. It is also believed that the fort is named after the Mauryan ruler Chitrangada Mori, as inscribed on the coins found belonging to that period.[5]

Historians believe that Madhyamika was the capital of Mauryas before Maurya King Chitranga (Chitrangada) founded Chitrakota (Chittor) in 7th century. Gauri Shankar Hira Chand Ojha has mentioned that when the Madhyamika city was abandoned the then rulers took big stones and other material from the ruins of Madhyamika for construction of Baoris, Palaces etc. One such example is Rani Shrangari Devi wife of Maharana Raimal used the stones from Madhyamika to build a Baori at Ghosundi. [6]

James Tod[7] writes that The warriors assembled under Visaladeva Chauhan against the Islam invader included the ruler of Chittor - Then the Gahlot, the ornament of the throng ; The respectful mention of the Gehlot as 'the ornament of the throne' clearly proves that the Chittor prince came as an ally. How rejoicing to an antiquary to find this confirmed by an inscription found amidst the ruins of a city of Mewar, which alludes to this very coalition ! The inscription is a record of the friendship maintained by their issue in the twelfth century, Samarsi of Chittor, and Pirthi Raj, the last Chohan king of India on their combining to chastise the king of Patun Anhulwarra "in like manner as did Bisaldeo and Tejsi of old unite against the foe, so, &c, &c. Now Tejsi was the grand father of Rawal Samarsi, who was killed in opposing the final Muslim invasion, on the Cagear, after one of the longest reigns in their annals : from which we calculate that Tejsi must have sat on the throne about the year S. 1120 (A.D. 1064). His youth and inexperience would account for his acting subordinately to the Chohan of Ajmer. The name of Udayaditya further confirms the date, as will be mentioned in the text. His date has been fully settled by various inscriptions found by the author. (See Transactions Royal Asiatic Society, Vol I, p.223.)

Tejaji fair is organized every year on the occasion of Teja Dashmi in Pratapnagar area.

Dasharatha Sharma[8] writes....[p.123]: Hammira was the last and most famous of the Chauhans of Ranthambhor. Hammira had ascended the throne in V.1339. Not very long after this, he started, according to the Hammiramahakavya, on a digvijaya or conquest of all the quarters. He first defeated Ajuna, the ruler of Bhamarasa, and then exacted tribute from the fort of Mandalakrita (मण्डलकृत) or Mandalgarh. Striking southwards from here, he reached Ujjayini and Dhara and defeated the Paramara ruler Bhoja. From here he turned northwards, and reached home passing through Chittor, Abu, Vardhanapura (वर्धनपुर) (Badnore), Changa (चंगा) (fortress of the mers still retains old name), Pushkar, Maharashtra (Marot), Sakambhari, Khandilla (खंडिल्ल) (Khandela), Champa (चम्पा) (Chaksu), and Karkarala (कर्कराला) (Karkaralagiri of the Balvan Inscription == Karauli), at the last of which places he received the homage of the ruler of Tribhuvanagiri (Tahangarh).

[p.124]: after came a Koti-yajna which was very much like the asvamedha of Samudragupta. It was under the direction of his purohita Vishvarupa. This digvijaya, or rather a number of raids from time to time magnified into one systematic digvijaya (Balvan Inscription, EI, XIX, pp.49 ff) by Nayachandra, took place before V. 1345 (c. 1288 A.D.). The Balvan inscription of the year mentions the performance of not only one but two Kotiyagna by Hammira and describes the capture of the elephant force of Arjuna, the ruler of Malwa, a kingdom the condition of which was indeed bad enough to invite interference from all sides.

Antiquity of Chittorgarh

The ancient inscriptions in the Pali Buddhist character have been discovered in various parts of Rajasthan of the race of Taxak or Tak, relating to the tribe Mori and Parmara are their descendants. Taxak Mori was the lord of Chittor from very early period. [9][10]

The Huna Kingdom of Sialkot (of Mihir Kula 515-540 AD), destroyed by Yashodharman, was subsequently seized by a new dynasty of kshatriyas called Tak or Taxaka. The Taxak Mori as being lords of Chittor from very early period and few generations after the Guhilots supplanted the Moris, this palladium of Hindu liberty was assailed by the arms of Islam. (725-35) we find amongst the numerous defenders who appear to have considered the cause of Chittor their own the Tak from Asirgarh. This race appears to have retained possession of Asirgarh for at least two centuries after this event as its chieftain was one of the most conspicuous leaders in the array of Prithvi Raj. In the poems of Chandar he is called the "Standard, bearer, Tak of Asir." [11]

The antiquity of Chittorgarh is difficult to trace, but it's believed that Bhima, the legendary figure of the Mahabharata, visited this place to learn the secrets of immortality and became the disciple of a sage, but his impatience to perform all the rites deprived him of his goal, and out of sheer anger he stamped on the ground creating a water reservoir, this reservoir is called as BhimLat. Later on, it came under Mauryas or Mori Jats. There are different opinions as to when it came under the Mewar ruler, but it remained the capital of Mewar till 1568, when it was shifted to Udaipur. It's believed that Bappa Rawal the legendary founder of Sisodia clan, received Chittorgarh in the middle of 8th century, as a part of the dowry after marriage with lst Solanki princess, after that his descendants ruled Mewar which stretched from Gujrat to Ajmer, upto the 16th century. [12]

Jat History in Chittorgarh district

Nagri or Madhyamika nagari situated at a distance of 20Km from Chittor in Tehsil-Chittorgarh was One of the most important townships of the Mauryan era in Rajasthan, situated on the banks of river Bairach. It was formerly known as Madhyamika, which flourished from the Maurya to Gupta era. The excavations over here have unearthed many interesting facts and have showed signs of strong Hindu and Buddhist influence. The Shivis (शिवि) Jats ruled this area. The classical writers locate Shivis (Siboi) at the confluence of Beas and Chenab. [13] Later they migrated to Rajasthan in the area of Madhyamika near Chittor from their coins bearing the legend Shibi janapadas have been found. [14] The Shivis tribe is known by several variants-Shiva in the Rigveda as one of the tribes defeated by the Bharata king Sudas; Sivi in the Aitreya Brahmana (VIII.23.10), Mahabharata (II.48.13), Sibi in Mahabharata (II. 48.13) Sibi in Mahabhashya on Panini (IV.2.52) where as Shaiba or Shaibayah as vishaya has been mentioned. Classical writers call them Siboi (Diodous 3, XVIII, 96; Strabo XV,1; Curtius IX,41)[15]

At the time of invasion of India by Alexander the great, in 326 BCE, Sivis were found inhabiting area in the vicinity of Malava tribes. The Greek writers have mentioned them wearing clothes similar to wild people even during the war. After some time of Alexander's war, they probably moved to Rajasthan along with Malavas. Thus they are found moveing from Punjab to Malwa and from their to Rajasthan. Their are ruins of an ancient town called 'Tamva-vati nagari' 11 miles north of Chittor. Ancient coins of Shivi people are found near this town bearng 'Majhamikaya Shivajanapadas', which means coins of 'Shiva janapada of Madhyamika'. The 'Tamvavati nagari' was called as 'Madhyamika nagari'. These coins are of the period first to second century BCE. [16]

Ram Sarup Joon[17] writes quoting [Todd]] that Chittor, then known as Jattor was the capital of Mori branch of Takshaks. Gehlot Jats later occupied it.

The Jats of the south-eastern provinces divide them selves into two sections - Shivgotri or of the family of Shiva and Kashyapagotri.

The rule of Gora Jats

In ancient times Gora Jats ruled in Ajmer-Merwara, Mewar, and Bundi-Sirohi areas in Rajasthan. G.H. Ojha, has brought to light the inscription on the temple of a goddess Bhawara Mata near Chhoti Sadri in Chittorgarh district, Rajasthan which was inscribed on Magha Sudi 10th , Samvat year 547 (491 AD), by Yashavapusha Gaur, Grandson of Rajayavardhana in memory of his parents. [22] [23]

Gaur is the name of a people in Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira. The Mahabharata mentions them under the name of Ghoraka, same as the later Ghori / Gauri [24]. It is the same name born by Mohammad Ghori. [25]

In Bhatt records they have been mentioned as Gor of Ajmer. The period of their inhabitance in this area was prior to the rule of Chauhans. [26]

Bhim Singh Dahiya in his book "Aryan Tribes and the Rig Veda" has mentioned that Gora is a Rigvedic clan. In Rigveda it has been written as Ghaura (1/36-43) that is present Jat clan Gora or Gaur or Gauri. [27]

Gora Jats continued to have important standing in the society as one daughter of this clan was married with Maharaja Suraj Mal of Bharatpur. She was mother of Maharaja Jawahar Singh, the eldest son and successor of Maharaja Suraj Mal. [28]

Raja Ratan Singh of Chittor

Reference - Fact & fiction: Padmini through the ages by Shoeb Khan and Palak Nandi, Jan 25, 2018

The earliest mention of Rawal Raja Ratan Singh, formally referred to as Ratnasimha, as the king of Chittorgarh is found in the inscriptions on one of the pillars of a temple of a Goddess in Dariba, Rajsamand. The date mentioned in the inscription is 1301, which is two years before the fall of Chittor in 1303. The stone inscription is the oldest acknowledgement of the prince of Chittor. It only speaks about the prince and there's no mention of a queen Patmavati.

In his 1936 work, 'Udaipur Rajya Ka Ithihas', famous historian Gauri Shankar Hera Chand Ojha says that the pillar was discovered by the British Archaeology Survey Department of India in 1930. According to historians, this inscription could be an oath taken by a new employee of the [[Raja Ratan Singh], and reads: "Samastharajawlis Mangalkrit Maharaja Kul Ratan (Ratna) Singh Dev Kalyan Virajya. Tanitritahmah. Srimaharani samsasthmu draivya paraprarhth" (Kings line up before you. Oh descendants of Maharana Raja Ratan Singh. I will dutifully perform commerce duty...).

Several other historians have claimed that he ascended the throne in 1302 and have also found some coins issued by Ratnasimha.

The detailed account of the 1303 Chittor war between Turk Alauddin Khilji and Rawal Ratan Singh has been written by the former's official writer and Sufi poet, Amir Khushro, in his book 'Khazain ul-Futuh', which is an account of Khilji's military campaigns.

The book recounts Khilji's conquest of Ranthambhore (1301), including the 'jauhar' (selfimmolation) committed there, and Chittor (1303).

Khusro was in Chittor between January 1303, when the siege began, and August 1303, when Chittor finally fell. But significantly, he does not have any mention about the war resulting from Khilji's infatuation for Rani Padmini or about the 'jauhar' (self-immolation) committed by Rajput women.

The book does not also mention Ratan Singh, but only the word 'Rai', which was commonly used for a king. Here's how Khusro describes the king's surrender in his work: "On the day the yellow-faced Rai sought refuge in the red canopy from fear of the green swords, the great Emperor (May his prosperity continue!) was still crimson with rage. But when he saw the vegetarian Rai trembling with fear, like the trampled and withered grass under the imperial tent — though the Rai was a rebel, yet the breeze of royal mercy did not allow any hot wind to blow upon him."

After the siege was over, Khusro claimed that Khilji pardoned 'Rai' but ordered the killing of 30,000 others.

"The book (Khazain ul-Futuh) explained the Chittor territory as 'Heaven of Hindus', a place which had abundant resources while describing the siege of the fort city from January 1303 to August 1303," says historian Dr A K Mittal, Gorakhpur University, in his book 'Bharat ka Rajnetik' and 'Sansthan Ithihas'.

Mittal also says that the word 'Rai' was used to describe a king during the period. Khusro's account forms the basis of claims made by Rajput organizations that Khilji didn't attack Chittor for Padmini.

Other historians and scholars of the Sultanate era—Khajawa Sadr Nijami, Maulana Sadruddin Offi, Minhaj Siraj Tajudin Iraqi, Saifuddin, Fakruddin and Imamudin Raza and Abdul Haqim—are also silent on Padmini. Meanwhile, the same period saw the penning of epic love sagas 'Laila-Majnu' and 'Sheeren-Farhad'.

While it remains an undisputed fact that Rajputs ruled over Chittor before 1303 and from 1336 to 1557, Rani Padmini or any other queen does not find any mention in the Rajput history of Mewar.

Chhoti Sadri inscription of samvat 547 (491 AD)

Gors have been mentioned in an inscription found in Bhavara Mata (भवर माता) temple on a hillock near village 'Chhoti Sadri' (छोटी सादड़ी) in the princely state of Udaipur. It is in Brahmi script and Sanskrit language. [29]Pandit Gairi Shankar Hirachand Ojha has written about the inscription of 'Chhoti Sadri' in an article published in Nagari pracharini-patrika, part 13, issue-1 under the title Gaur namak agyat kshatriya vansh - गौर नामक अज्ञात क्षत्रिय वंश. Some lines from that inscription are as under: [30]

This inscription indicates that Maharaja Dhanya soma (धान्य सोम) was a popular king of Gor kshatriya clan. Rajyavardhan (राज्यवर्द्धण), Rashtra (राष्ट्र) and Yasha Gupta (यश गुप्त) rulers followed in succession. The inscription also reveals that the Gor kings had constructed goddess temple in memory of their ancestors on magha shukla 10 in samvat 547 (491 AD). The inscription proves the rule of Gor kings near 'Chhoti Sadadi' place in Rajasthan in 6th century. They were considered to be powerful till the rule of Maharana Raimal. [31]

Chittor Inscription of Maan Mori year 713 AD

Chittor Inscription of Maan Mori S.V. 770 (=713 AD+ English Text of Inscription No. III by James Tod

By the lord of waters may thou be protected! What is there which resembles the ocean? On whose margins the red buds of honey-yielding trees are eclipsed by swarms of bees, whose beauty expands with the junction of numerous streams. What is like the ocean, inhaling the perfume of the Paryata 1, who was compelled to yield as tribute, wine, wealth, and ambrosia 2? Such is the ocean!—may he protect thee.

Of a mighty gift, this is the memorial. This lake enslaves the minds of beholders, over whose expanse the varied feathered tribe skin with delight, and whose banks are studded with every kind of tree. Falling from the lofty-peaked mountain, enhancing the beauty of the scene, torrent rushes to the lake. The mighty sea-serpent 3, overspent with toil in the churning of the ocean, repaired to this lake for repose.

On this earth’s surface was Maheswara 4, a mighty prince, during whose sway the name of foe was never heard; whose fortune was known to the eight quarters 5; on whose arm victory reclined for support. He was the light of the land. The praises of the race of TWASTHA 6 were determined by Brahma’s own mouth.

Fair, filled with pride, sporting amidst the shoals of the lotos, is the swan fed by his hand, from whose countenance issue rays of glory: such was RAJA BHEEM 7, a skilful swimmer in the ocean of battle, even to where the Ganges pours in her flood 8 did he go, whose abode is Avanti 9. With faces resplendent as the moon, on whose lips yet marked with the wound of their husband’s teeth, the captive wives of the foes, even in their hearts does Raja Bheem dwell. By his arm he removed the apprehensions of his enemies; he considered them as errors to be expunged. He appeared as if created of fire. He could instruct even the navigator 10 of the ocean.

From him was descended RAJA BHOJ 11. How shall he be described, he, who in the field of battle divided with his sword the elephant’s head, the pearl from whose brain 12 now adorns his breast: who devours his foes as does RAHOO 13 the sun or the moon, who ti the verge of space erected edifices in token of victory?

From him was a son whose name was MAUN, who was surcharged good qualities, and with whom fortune took up her abode. One day he met an aged man: his appearance made him reflect that his frame was as a shadow, evanescent; that the spirit which did inhabit it was like the seed of the scented Kadma 14; that the riches of royalty were brittle as a blade of grass; and the man was like a lamp exposed in the light of day. Thus ruminating, for the sake of his race who had gone before him, and for sake of good works, he made this lake, whose waters are expansive and depth unfathomable. When I look on this ocean-like lake, I ask myself, if it may be this which is destined to cause the final doom 15.

The warriors and chief of RAJA MAUN 16 are men of skill and valour—pure in their lives and faithful. Raja Maun is a heap of virtues—the chief who enjoys his favour may court all the gifts of fortune. When the head is inclined on his lotos foot, the grain of sand which adheres becomes an ornament thereto. Such is the lake, shaded with trees, frequented by birds, which the man of fortune, SHRIMAN RAJA MAUN, with great labour formed. By the name of its lord (Maun), that of the lake (surwur) is known to the world.

By him versed in the alankara, PUSHHA, the son of NAGA BHUT, these stanzas have been framed. Seventy had elapsed beyond seven hundred years (Samvatisir), when the lord of KINGS OF MALWA 17 formed this lake. By SEVADIT, grandson of KHETRI KARUG, were these lines cut.

English Text of Inscription No. III by James Tod[33]

Inscription in the Nail-headed character of the Mori Princes of Cheetore, taken from a column on the banks of the Lake Mansurwur (मानसरोवर), near that city.

Notes by James Tod to inscription III related to Jats[34]

  • (Note 1). —The Paryat (पारिजात) is also called the Har-singar, or ‘ornament of the neck,’ it’s flowers being made into collars and bracelets. Its aroma is very delicate, and the blossom dies in a few hours.
  • (Note 2). -Imrita, the food of the immortals obtained at the churning of the ocean. The contest for this amongst the gods and demons is well known. Vrihspati, or Sookar, regent of the planet Venus, on this occasion lost an eye; and hence this Polyphemus has left the nickname of Sookaracharya to all who have but one eye.
  • (Note 3). —His name Matloi (मातली) .
  • (Note 4). —A celebrated name in the genealogies of the TAKSHAC Pramara, of which the Mori is a conspicuous Sacha or branch. He was the founder of the city of Maheswar, on the southern banks of the Nerbudda, which commands the ford leading from Awinti and Dhara (the chief cities of the Mori Pramaras) to the Dekhan.
  • (Note 5). —The ancient Hindu divided his planisphere into eight quarters, on which he placed the Koonjorries or elephants, for its support.
  • (Note 7). –Raja Bheem , the lord of Avanti or OOjein, the king of Malwa, is especially celebrated in the Jain annals. A son of his led a numerous colony into Marwar, and founded many cities between the Looni river and the Aravulli mountains. All became proselytes to the Jain faith, and their descendants, who are amongst the wealthiest and most numerous of these mercantile sectarians, are proud of their Rajpoot descent; and it tells when they are called to responsible offices, when they handle sword as well as pen.
  • (Note 8). –Ganga-Sagur, or the Island at the mouth of the Ganges, is specified by name as the limit of Bheem’s conquests. His memoria may yet exist even there.
  • (Note 10). —Paaryataca, a navigator.
  • (Note 11). RAJA BHOJ. There is no more celebrated name than this in the annals and literature of the Rajpoots; but there were three princes of the Pramara race who bore it. The period of the last Raja Bhoj, father of Udyadit, is now fixed, by various inscriptions discovered by me, A.D. 1035, obtained at the temple of Nadole, namely S. 631 and 721, or A.D. 575 and 665. [Abu-l fazl Al Baihaki |Abulfazil]] gives the period of the first Bhoj as S. 545; but as we find that valuable MS of the period of the last Bhoj confirmed by the date of this inscription of his son MAUN, namely, S.770, we may put perfect confidence on it, and now consider the period of the three namely S. 631, 721, and 1091 – A.D. 567, 665 and 1035 – as fixed points in Rajpoot chronology.
  • (Note 12). –In the head of that class of elephants called Bhadra, the Hindoo says, there is always a large pearl.
  • (Note 13). –The monster RAHOO of the Rajpoot, who swallows the sun and moon, causing eclipse, is Fenris, the wolf of the Scandinavians. The Asi carried the same ideas West, which they taught within the Indus.
  • (Note 14). –Kadama is a very delicate flower that decays almost instantaneously.
  • (Note 15). – Maha-pralaya.
  • (Note 16) –The MS annals of the Rana’s family state that the founder Bappa, conquered Cheetore from MAUN MORI. This inscription is therefore invaluable as establishing the era of the conquest of Cheetore by the Gehlotes, and which was immediately following the first irruption of the arms of Islam, as rendered in the annals of Mewar.

1. Raja Maun mentioned here is the same as Raja Maan looking to James Tod's style of writing names as he has mentioned Raja Maun for Raja Man Singh of Amber. (See -James Todd Annals, p.143) Laxman Burdak (talk) 02:22, 12 January 2015 (EST)
2. Inscription mentions Samvarsar 770 = 713 AD Laxman Burdak (talk) 02:25, 12 January 2015 (EST)
3. Inscription mentions Sevadit, grandson of Khetri Karug. It is to be noted that Karag is a Jat clan.

Chittor Inscription of Naravarman (Parmara) 971 AD

Chittor Inscription of Kumarapala (Solanki) V. 1207 (1150 AD)

Chittor Kumarapala Inscription of 1150 AD

Chittor Inscription of 1300 AD

Chittor Jaina pillar Inscriptions of 13 c.

Chittor Inscriptions of 1302 AD

Chittor Samadhishvara Inscriptions of 1428 AD

Chittor Victory pillar Inscription of 1460 AD [43]
