History

After untimely death of Raja Ram in the battle of Bijal between Shekhawats and Chauhans on 4th July 1688, old father of Raja Ram, Bhajja Singh became the leaders of the Jats. Aurangzeb played a trick to create rivalry between the Jats and the neighbouring Kachwah rulers of Amber. To attain this goal he appointed Raja Bishan Singh of Amber as Faujdar of Mathura. The Kachwahas were bent upon subjugating the Jats, who were fighting for their freedom from the Mughal rule. Bishan Singh gave a written promise to the Emperor to destroy the fort of Sinsini. The Mughal and the Rajput armies jointly attacked Sinsini and captured it after a struggle lasting for five months, in January 1690. In this battle 200 Mughals and 700 Rajputs were killed against 1500 Jats.

Faujdar Churaman (1695-1121 A.D.)

Ram Sarup Joon[1] writes that ..After the death of Bhaja Singh, his grandson Churaman (son of the younger brother of Raja Ram

assumed the leadership of the Jats. He was brave, and perseverance, and soon consolidated his strength. He raised an Army of 500 Cavalry and 1,000 Infantry, and with the alliance of Chief Nand Ram of Hathras and Mursan started attacking royal treasuries and Parganas. Churaman established his Headquarters-in a fort which he constructed in the marshy Jungles with impregnable mud walls and deep motes. This fort was latter called Bharatpur. Jats came readily to his army which soon expanded to 12,000. He preferred to collect arms rather than money. The movement of royal caravan was practically stopped within his territory. In 1704, he regained the fort of Sinsini from the Moguls. When a war was going on between Bahadur Shah and Azam, the two sons of Aurangzeb, Churaman plundered both the armies near Samugarh. Later, Bahadur Shah, who emerged victorious offered to appoint him Sardar of 500 horsemen, and 1,000 footmen to win over his support. This lure, however, did not work with Churaman and he remained independent. The declining power of Moghul Empire enabled Sardar Churaman to extend his influence upto River Chambal. He had always an eye on the throne of Delhi. Once he came close to it under the pretext of helping Jahandar Shah and then plundered him near Agra. This act of Sardar Churaman annoyed Farukh Siyar. Churaman was persuaded to seek apology at the instance of Chelaram, the Governor of Agra and Shamsuddin. He presented himself in the royal court but as the entire force of Jats was at the back of Churaman the king did not consider it prudent to punish him. Instead, to win his favour he was granted permission to collect taxes on the road from Delhi to Chambal. This liberal concession from the Emperor made Churaman the undisputed ruler of the territory. This was not liked by the Rajputs who inspite of their services to the king found a Jat winning favour. Sawai Raja Jai Singh received large funds from the Moghul courts and with the support of Bhim Singh Hada, of Kotah, Gaj Raj Singh Rathore of Mewar, and Budh Singh Hada

of Bundi, besieged the fort of Thun in 1716. Mohakam Singh son of Churaman and his nephew Roop Singh, put up a stiff resistance to the forces of Jai Singh with the help of other Jats.

Later, Sardar Abus Samad came from Lahore to help Jai Singh. He was a rival of Syed Abdullah and the Syed could not tolerate his success.

Therefore, he corresponded with Churaman and persuaded him to pay Rs 36 Lakhs. The Jats vacated the fort of Thoon but it was not considered a victory for either of the two parties. Churaman became a trusted friend of the Syed Brothers. After the death of Farusksiyar he joined hands with Syed Hussain Ali, and besieged Neku Shah in the fort of Agra. Hussain Ali promised to give him the title of Raja but before fulfilling his promise, he died. In 1726, Syed Abdullah declared war against Mohammed Shah and Churaman helped him by attacking and plundering the camp of the latter. Thereafter, he considered himself a full independent ruler.

It was an irony of fate that Sardar Churaman remained mostly engaged with outsiders and forgot to keep his house in order. There arose some difference between him and his nephew Badan Singh. Sardar Churaman imprisoned Badan Singh. Annoyed with this treatment, Badan Singh joined Raja Jai Singh against his uncle. Churaman became disgusted with these family tangles and committed suicide by taking poison.

The death of Churaman left a void in the Jat echelons. Raja Jai Singh exploited this, besieged the sons of Churaman with 14,000 troops and captured Churaman's fort. It is said that the fort was captured after 2 moths siege only after Badan Singh divulged the vulnerability of the fort to Raja Jai Singh. The sons of Churaman left the place and took shelter with Raja Ajit Singh of Bundi.

Churaman expanded his base

In 1702 after the death of Bhajja Singh, Churaman came on front. Within a short period Churaman gathered 500 horse riders and thousands of soldiers. Nand Ram, the Zamindar of Hathras, also joined him along with 100 horse riders. Churaman recruited the famous brigand of Mendoo and Mursan in his army. He constructed a fort at place known as ‘Thoon’ at a distance of 150 km in west of Agra. Within a short span there were 80 villages under the Thoon state. There was an army of 14 – 15 thousands.

Such a big army needed a lot of money. Churaman decided to gather booty from rich states of Kota and Bundi. He acquired Sinsini from the Mughals in 1704. In 1705 there was a war with Mughal subadar Mukhtar khan of Agra and with Rajabahadur in 1707 at Sinsini. In the second war at Sinsini 1000 Jats were lost but they got the victory.

The Battle of Jajau and rise of Churaman

Genealogy of Bharatpur Rulers

Aurangzeb died in 1707. Taking advantage of the weakness of Mughal rule Churaman planned to expand his state. His rise started from the battle of Jajau in 1707. After the war was over he looted both armies of Azam as well as Muazzam. Churaman showed wisdom and decided to be honest to the New Mughal ruler with a view to protect huge wealth of booty, he appeared before Bahadurshah on 15 September 1707 and presented gifts in his honour.

In January 1709 Churaman entered into an agreement with Jai Singh, looking to the possibilities of victory of Rajputs in the battles of Sambhar and Kaman and Bahadurshah’s intention to arrive at compromise with them. Under the garb of agreement Churaman intensified his campaign to abolish Rajput Zamindaris and capturing back the Jat areas occupied by Kachwahas. He succeeded in getting back Sogar, Bhusawar, Kaman, Khohari, Kot, Khunthare, Ithera, Jadila and Chaugdara.

In 1710 Churaman joined Bahdurshah in his campaign against Sikhs. He took part in the battles of Sadhaura and Lohagarh and went up to Lahore with Bahadurshah. Then Churaman was excused unconditionally and he returned to his old Mansab.

After the death of Bahadurshah his son Jahandarshah became the successor. In 1713 when there was a war between Jahandarshah and Farrukhsiyar, Churaman looted both during the course of this succession war. This way he got a lot of wealth in booty. Similarly he captured elephants of the Royal army during the battle of Hasanpur.

Rahjan to Rahdar

Farrukhsiyar appointed Raja Chhabilaram Nagar and later Khan-a-dauran as Subadar of Agra with orders to punish Churaman. Khan-a-dauran and Amir-ul-Umra, who had acquired Faujdari of Mathura wanted to maintain law and order and peace in the areas of their possessions and finding themsselves helpless before Churaman, they cultivated friendship with him and prepared him to appear before the Emperor in the Royal Darbar. Therefore, on 27 September 1713 Churaman appeared before the Mughal Emperor who raised his status by granting him the title of Rao and Rahdari rights over the Royal Highways from Barapula to Sikandara.

In 1715 Farrukhsiyar gave Ikram, Aghapur, Malah, Badhagaon, Bharatpur and Rupwas parganas in Jagir. Even after this Churaman continued to sack along with Rustam and Khemkaran Sogaria. With such allurement also Farrukhsiyar could not curb the activities of Churaman so he sent Raja Jaisingh of Jaipur for subjugation in 1716. Churaman won the war. Rajput and Mughal armies returned back.

In 1719 when there was a war between Nikosiyar and Shamsherkhan, Churaman helped Shamsherkhan under the leadership of Govind Singh, the son of Nand Ram of Hathras. On 13 November 1720 he looted Abdullakhan and got 20 lakh gold coins in the booty. This way Churaman had become the real ruler from Delhi to Chambal on the land west of Yamuna.

Churaman had organized his state with great labour, tact and struggle. He was not having the formal title of Raja but the real undisputed ruler of area under his occupancy.

Badan Singh, the nephew of Churaman, was always with Churaman in every campaign. Badan Singh wanted the Jagir of Sinsini to support his increasing family. But Mohkam Singh, the ambitious son of Churaman was not in favour of giving the Jagir of Sinsini to Badan Singh. The conflict between the ambitions of Mohkam Singh and Badan Singh became the cause of death of Churaman, who consumed poison and died on 20 September 1721.

Founder of Jat State of Bharatpur

Churaman : Founder of Jat State of Bharatpur

Churaman had extraordinary organizational capacities, wonderful political vision and cunningness of a great Raja. With these qualities he could convert the Jat rebellion started by Gokula into a form of a powerful state. Churaman was in real sense the founder of Jat State of Bharatpur.

The emergence of Badan Singh

Girish Chandra Dwivedi[2] mentions....The emergence of Thakur Badan Singh as the leader of the Jats, marks the dawn of a new era in their history. It signalled the ascendancy of the forces of stable conquest and steady growth over those of dubious and erratic expansion.1 However, the situation that he inherited was difficult,2 if not "almost hopeless".3 Far from being a homogenous unit,4 the Jats, so accustomed to clannish and individual independence, were broadly divided on policy matters into two hostile camps. Dispossessed Muhkam Singh with his continual machinations to regain the leadership posed a potential threat to the new chief. There is little doubt that the adherents of Churaman and his sons, like Khema,5 Bhure Singh and Daya Ram6 of Mendu.XV

5. We have no definite information about the doings of Khema during Jai Singh's second seige of Thun. However, we do come across a reference in Shah nama Munawwar Kalam (Shivdas 103), showing Khema offering presents (two mohars) to the Emperor along with the imperial grandees just before the Nauroze festival in 1133 A.H. (C. third week of July, 1721). This leads us to infer that this chieftain continued to pretend his loyalty and thereby escaped being chastised by Jai Singh.

6. Bhure Singh and Daya Ram respectively were the son and grandson of Nanda Jat (see Imad, 82). It seems that Nanda died at this time for we do not find his name being mentioned any more-leaving Bhure and Daya Ram as his successors at Mendu.

XV. The author mis-takes Mendu for Mudsan, the fort of the successors of Nand Ram Jat of Thenua clan. Suraj Mal crushed the Bhadoria Rajputs of Agra district and the Porach Rajput taluqdar of Mendu in Aligarh district. He did not spare even independent Jat Zamindar of Mudsan, and evicted him from his fort. See J.N. Sarkar, Fall, II, (1991 ed.) p. 266; Allygurh Statistics, 239; S.PD., XXI, 100 and XXVII, 206; Rajwade I, 285, 295.

Mendu is situated 20 miles south, Hathras, 22 miles south of Aligarh, both on N. Rly. and Mudsan lies 7 miles west of Hathras. For correct situation of these places, see, J.M. Siddiqi, Aligarh District: A Historical Survey, 110, 113 fn. 4, 207, f.n. 6,210 f.n. 7, 211 f.n. 6.

Jagbir Singh informs that Raja of Mudsan shifted to Sasni about 12 miles east of Mudsan. Suraj Mal put Mendu under the control of Daya Ram/ Baran Singh of Hathras. After the death of Maharaja Suraj Mal his successor Jawahar Singh handed over Mudsan again to Raja of Sasni, who returned back to his old fort.
