History
The sacred pool of Ganga
Lepel H. Griffin[1] states - Previous to the death of Phul, which took place in 1652 — the dates of the decease of members of the family are not known with any accuracy, and the reason is said to be that it was not customary with this tribe to convey the ashes of their dead to Hardwar, where Brahmans keep up registers of the deaths of those whose final ceremonies they perform, but to cast them into a sacred pool at the village of Ganga, in the Moga division of the Firozpur district. This pool acquired sanctity through a fakir named Kalunath, a Dhaliwal Jat, who, when importuned to accompany a body of pilgrims to the Ganges at Hardwar, declined, but sent as a substitute, his staff and gourd, which he directed should be thrown into the sacred river. On the return of his friends, he enquired if they had complied with his directions, and they replied that they had ; but on visiting the pool outside the village, both gourd and staff were found floating on the surface of the water. Thence forward the pool was considered holy ; pilgrimages were made to it, and into it the ashes of the dead were thrown. It has now lost much of its old sanctity, and, although a fair is held at Ganga, annually, at the Baisakhi, it is only the Jhan Jats of the Cis-Satlej and the Ramana Dhaliwal Jats, who hold it in respect.
