Birth, Childhood and his family
He was born in village Sigadi of district Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan on 1 August 1927 in a Hindu Jat family of Chaudhary Ladu Ram Tetarwal. His mother's name is Jiwani. The village Sigadi is situated 15 km west of Jhunjhunu in district Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. Ghasi Ram is youngest of three sons of Chaudhary Ladu Ram. His childhood name was kept by his grandfather Shri Ramu Ram Tetarwal as Ghisa, who later became famous as Dr Ghasi Ram Verma. [2]
His family includes his wife Rakmini Devi, three sons and six grand children. All the three sons are Engineer by profession. Eldest two sons have married with American girls while youngest one married with Indian girl.
Education
There was no school in his own village so Ghisa was sent to village Vahidpura, situated 5 km away from Sigadi, for his school education. His name was written Ghasi Ram in the records of school and from that time Ghisa became Ghasi Ram. After passing 4th standard he went to Pilani for further studies. He was talented but a poor boy so with the help of scholarship and tuition etc he could complete B.A. in 1950. Meanwhile he was married to Rukmani Devi daughter of Chaudhary Gangaram of village Nayasar. After doing B.A. he could not afford his higher education due to financial problems so he did teaching for two years in Vishambar High School Bagar, district Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. After getting some money from teaching job he took admission in Banaras Hindu University in Maths subject in year 1952 and completed his M.A. (Maths) in 1954. He later went to Pilani to complete his Ph.D. in Maths from University of Rajasthan under the guidance of Dr Vibhuti Bhusan Sen. He got Ph.D.(Maths) in December 1957 and joined as Lecturer of Maths in Pilani itself. [3]
Went to United States
During January 1958, he came in contact with American Professor Mr. Kurt Auto Fedrix of Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New Yark United States, during a session of Indian Science Congress at Kolkata. He was very much influenced by the talents of Dr Ghasi Ram Verma and invited him to United States for further research. Dr Ghasi Ram Verma borrowed some money from his friends and relatives and went to United States. He did research work for about a year and then joined in September 1959 the Fortham University, New York for teaching. He taught Maths there for two years and came back to Pilani in July 1961 and started teaching here. In 1964 he got invitation from University of Rode in United States. He went there with his family in September 1964. He liked this place very much and after doing teaching there for about 36 years got voluntary retirement in year 2000 from the post of Professor. He earned a great reputation during 40 years of his teaching career as mathematician. [4]
A great donor and social worker
Dr Ghasi Ram Verma is a great donor to the educational Institutes in Rajasthan. During summers he visited India every year and whatever he earned in America spent here in India for the cause of improving standard of education. According to an estimate he has donated about 2 Crores of rupees from his personal savings.
Verma's own charitable works - including the construction of more than 20 hostels for the girls studying in Indian Schools - have been captured in five volumes of Hindi poetry and prose. One of these was written for his 75th birthday, partially translated to English. It contains contributions from scientists, doctors and one young author who was once his neighbour - Jhumpa Lahir, winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Interpreter of Maladies, a collection of short stories. She called Verma and his wife her extended family, "extremely gentle and affectionate people". [5]
A professor describes Verma in the book as "magnanimous," with "limitless feelings of selflessness, dedication and sympathetic understanding of the needs of others." [6]
"He is a quite revered in India as a mathematician and as a philanthropist," notes Barbara Kaskosz, a fellow URI math professor who knows him for 25 years - though she just found out the extent of his charitable work in his homeland India. "I knew he made contributions to the Indian educational system because he always collected textbooks to send to India, but the extent of his contribution I just learned about very, very recently." Said Kaskosz from Poland.[7]
