Hinglaj (Hindi:हिंगलाज, Urdu: ﮨنگلاج ), Hinglaz, is an important Hindu pilgrimage place in Layari tahsil, Lasbela district of Balochistan province, Pakistan.

Location

It is situated in Balochistan province about 250km north-west of Karachi[1]. It is 19 km from Arabean sea and 130 km from western cost of Indus River, located in Khirkar Hill series.

History

The Kshatriyas in ancient times had movements between Baluchistan and India. Thakur Deshraj writes that the Jats of Braj area traditionally sing songs of Hinglaj devi and it is very likely that the jats constructed the temple of Hinglaj Mata at Balochistan. During mauryan period kulut was capital of this country and Chitra Varma was the ruler. Jats have Baloch Gotra. [2] According to Usha Agarwal, The Mauri rulers founded the temple of Hinglaj Mata in Mandsaur district as she was their kuladevi. Initially this area was known as 'Hinglaj Tekri' but later the Mauri rulers built a fort here and this came to be known as Hinglajgarh or Hinglaj Fort. [3][4]

V S Agarwal[5] mentions....[p.39]: These six names (of mountains) seem to be taken from some Bhuvanakosha list, giving in order the ranges on the western frontiers from Afghanistan to Baluchistan. Starting from below, Shalvakagiri is phonetically the name of [p.40]: Hala Range lying north-south between Sind and Baluchistan. To the west of it is the Makran chain of hills the home of the Hingula River and Hingulaja goddess, Hingula seems to be the Prakrit form of Kimsulaka. It was also called by its synonymous name, the Parada country, Pardene of classical writers, corresponding to Pardayana of Patanjali (IV.2.99). Goddess Hihgula of this place is of vermilion colour, also called Dadhiparni, because of its association with the ancient Scythian tribes of Dahae and Parnians. It was worshipped also as Nani, or Nana of antiquity.

om hingule param hingule amrutrupini tanu shakti manah shive shree hingulai namah swaha

Translation : "Oh Hingula Devi, she who holds nectar in her self and is power incarnate. She who is one with Lord Shiva, to her we pay our respects and make this offering (swaha)"

Hinglaj Mata in Baluchistan
