Jhunjhunu

Jhunjhunu is a district town in Rajasthan. It was founded in the memory of Jat chieftain Jhunjha or Jujhar Singh Nehra. Jhunjhunu was the main center of the Shekhawat clan during mughal period. Sardul singh Shekhawat conquered the city in samvat 1787 (1730 AD). This is clear from the following poetry in Rajasthani Language -

Satrahso Satashiye,Agahan Mass Udaar,

Sadu linhe jhunjhunu,Sudi Athen Sanivaar.

Prior to this, Jhunjhunu was controlled by the Muslim Nawab Rohella Khan. The Muslim Nawab 'Sadulla Khan', incharge of Jhunjhunu, was defeated jointly by Shardul Singh and Jujhar Singh Nehra. But, as per Kunwar Panne Singh's book 'Rankeshari Jujhar Singh', Jujhar Singh was killed by Shekhawats after he was appointed the chieftain. It is clear from the poetry in Rajasthani Language -

Sade, linho Jhunjhunu, Lino amar patai,

Bete pote padaute pidhi sat latai.

Jhunjhunu town was established in the memory of Jujhar Singh, the above Jat chieftain of Nehra gotra. The town was made the capital of the new Shekhawati. The town is famous for frescos on grand Havelis, which is speciality of the Shekhawati region.

Jhunjhunu is located at 29°6' North, 75°25' East.
