History

In Mahabharata

Kaithuli is derived from the sanskrit word Kratha (क्रथ). Kratha has been mentioned as an Asura king in Mahabharata at several places.

The Mahabharata Tribe - Kratha (क्रथ) mentioned in Shalya Parva (IX.44.65) as one of the kings who came to the ceremony for investing Kartikeya with the status of generalissimo:

Sabha Parva (II.27.7) mentions that Bhimasena subjugated Kosala, Ayodhya, Gopalakaksha, Bhallata, Kratha, Matsya, Pasubhumi, Vatsabhumi, Mallas, Sarmakas, Varmakas, Videhas, Magadha, Sakas, Danda, Vanga, Mlechchhas,

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 267 shloka 19 mentions that the mighty army, protected by Nala and Nila and Angada and Kratha' and Mainda and Dwivida, marched forth for achieving the purpose of Raghava.

(Mahabharata:III.67.19)

Adi Parva, Mahabharata/SECTION LXVII mentions about the ancestry of the men, the gods, the Danavas, the Asuras, the Gandharvas, the Rakshasas etc.

"Asura, O king, who was called Kratha, was born on earth as the royal sage Parvateya of form resplendent like a golden mountain. He amongst the Asura who was known as Salabha the second, became on earth the monarch Prahlada in the country of the Valhikas."
"The Graha who was brought forth by Sinhika and who persecuted the Sun and the Moon became noted on earth as the monarch Kratha."

Mention by Usha Agarwal
