Bappa Rawal (c. 713-810) (बापा रावल), eighth ruler of the Guhilot Dynasty and founder of the Mewar Dynasty (r. 734-753) in present-day Rajasthan.

Childhood

Bappa Rawal is said to have spent his childhood near a place called Nagda.

Bappa Rawal at Nagda

Nagda is site of ancient ruins. Founder of Mewar, Bappa Rawal had made Nagda his first capital. Bappa was married with Kokila, daughter of Raja Chandra Singh of this place. Iltutmish destroyed it in 1210 AD. After this attack people left this place and moved to Ahar or Dhulakota near Udaipur. Nagda or Nagahrada has been mentioned Jaina literature Tirtha-Mala Chaityavandana as - 'वन्दे श्री करणावती शिवपुरे नागद्रहे (नागह्रद) नाणके'. [1]

Nagda was founded by Nagas. Its ancient name was Nagahrada (नागहृद). It gets name from Naga+Dahan = burning of Nagas. It signifies the struggle between Aryans and Nagavanshis that took place here in which a large scale massacre of Nagas took place.

Initial History

Although a surviving member of the Guhilot clan, Prince Kalbhoj (his actual name) who came from Atri clan did not continue the family name of seven generations when he came to the throne; instead, he established the Mewar Dynasty, naming it for the kingdom he had just taken. It is said that Bappa was blessed by Harita Rishi, a sage of the Mewar region, with kingship. His father, Rawal Mahendra II had married a woman of the Paramara clan, from Mt. Abu or Chandravati, both Paramara centres at that time. She was also the sister of Maan Mori, the Paramara king who ruled much of the State of Mewar. This included territory held byGuhilot clan too. The Paramaras from Malwa had annexed this area a century or earlier and had set up their capital in the ancient fortress of Chittorgarh.

History

Ram Swarup Joon[2] writes...The Gahlot gotra is found among the Rajputs also and they call themselves the descendants of Ramchandra, but their descent is believed to be from Balvanshi

ruler named Gupta. It is mentioned that Balvanshi Bhattarak King saved the Maurya kings by re-strengthening their power. Bhattarak ruled from 512 to 525 Vikram Samvat. According to "Corpus Inscription Antiquary" Page 169, based on a rock inscription inscribed in 569 Vikram. Bhattark Gupta Balvanshi had four sons - Dharsen, Dronasen, Dhruwasen and Dharpatsen. Each one of them succeeded to the throne one after another, and they were given titles of Maha Samant, Mahapratihar, Mahakartak and Maharaj.

Gohasen son of Dharpatsen was a follower of Vaishnavism, but he had faith in Buddhism too. His descendents are called Gahlawat. Several legends are very well known about Goha and Bappa Rawal. The dynasty is supposed to have migrated from Balabhipur.

There was one Nag Datt among the descendants of Goha who was killed by the Bhils. His young son who later on became known as Kalbhoj Bappa Rawal, joined the army of the Jat Raja Man Indra of Chittor and ultimately rose to the position of commander of his army. Proving to be very brave and loyal, he was ultimately declared heir apparent to the throne and finally became the ruler of the kingdom. The Gahlot gotra is found both among the Jats and the Rajputs. There is however no doubt that Bhattarak was a Maurya Jat dynasty. It existed before the birth of Rajputs. If Bappa Rawal were not a Jat, Jat Raja Mann Indra would not have adopted him as him son. He maintained the title of Rana.

During the Rajput era they joined them and started being called Rajputs. Goha was the grandson of Bhattarak and son of Dhropat Sen. He was married in the Gupta dynasty. Godhes are a sub-tribe and branch of Godhas.

Battles against Arab Invaders

Bappa Rawal played an important role in the Battle of Rajasthan, a series of wars fought in the 8th century AD between the regional rulers of North-Western India and the Arabs of Sindh, in which the regional Indian rulers inflicted a resounding defeat on the invading Arabs.

In the 8th century Arab Muslims started attacking India within a few decades of the birth of Islam, which was basically an extension of invasion of Persia. In order to ward off Muslim invasions across the western and northern borders of Rajasthan, Bappa united the smaller states of Ajmer and Jaisalmer to stop the attacks. Bappa Rawal fought and defeated the Arabs in the country and turned the tide for a while. Bin Qasim was able to defeat Dahir in Sindh but was stopped by Bappa Rawal.

Some accounts say that Qasim attacked Chittor, which was ruled by Moris at that time. Bappa, of Guhilot dynasty, was a commander in Mori army and so was Dahir's son. Bappa defeated and pursued Bin Qasim through Saurashtra and back to the western banks of the Sindhu (i.e. current day Baluchistan). He then marched on to Ghazni and defeated the local ruler Salim and after nominating a representative returned to Chittor. After Raja Mori named Bappa Rawal his successor and crowned him King of Chittor.

Myth presented as History

One myth based creation of history relates to snatching of Chitor by 'Bapa Rawal' from Maun Maurya sometime between 724-738 AD. This is totally baseless and pure creation of Brahmin/bardic myth that has been given credence by James Tod and followed by Gauri Shankar Hirachand Ojha and C V Vaidya and accepted by-and-large by later day historians of India without its critical review.

Ahar Udaipur Inscription dated 977 AD

In the light of epigraphy based information contained in Atpur Inscription dated 977 AD, it is proved beyond any scope of doubt, that there was no person in the first 20 rulers of Guhil/Gahalot dynasty who bore either the title of Rawal or his name was Bappa or Bappa Rawal. In fact he is the product of unbridled imagination of bards and as such a legendary hero. Moreover, their capital up to almost end of 10 century AD was Ahar and nowhere it is mentioned as Chitor. See, how the myth has been used to invent history by pushing the real history to the dark corners for such a long time !

This is just one example to prove that Jat history has been erased consciously from the pages of history books of India but epigraphy is still there to help the laborious scholars only if they exert efforts collectively and persistently to dig out irrefutable historic data to reconstruct (not to invent) Jat History.

Achaleshwar temple inscription of year 1342 V.E. (1285 AD)

Notes by Wiki editor -

1. हारीत ऋषि - Harita (हरिता) is a village in Hisar tahsil and in district Haryana. It was founded by Nagil Jats who came from Ranthambhor. There is need to research relation between Harta Rishi and history of Nagil clan.
2. Though the inscription has its own value as it highlights his earlier life and clan name but it may contain that information what the contemporary rulers of the Mewar believed to be about their ancestors, so, it must not be used without critical examination of the narrative about past history of 500 years when Bappa Rawal is placed on the throne of Mewar. --DrRajpalSingh (talk) 05:41, 23 January 2015 (EST)
