Karaskara (कारस्कर) were people mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. They have been mentioned in Mahabharata.

History

Guptas are sometimes called Kāraskaras. Khatkals are mentioned in the Mahabharata as 'Kata Kalika', along with Mahishaka (Bains), Karaskar, Karkana and Viraka. 'Kata Kalika' became 'Katkal' or Khatkal as they are named in Punjab. In Haryana they are called Khatkar. It should be noted that Kakar, Varika, etc, mentioned here are all Jat clans.

Sandhya Jain[6] mentions Karaskara (कारस्कर) - Served as tributaries in the palace of Yudhishthira (II.46.21). Mentioned as people (VIII.30.45). Karaskara (कारस्कर) may be identified with Jat Gotra - Karaskar (कारस्कर)

Jat History

Ram Swarup Joon[7] writes.... According to Bhagwatdatta, Baluchis of (of Balochistan) today are the descendants of Anu. Baluchya, Balhara, Bal, Balan are Jat gotras. Kak, Kakarzai, Klock, Kukar, Khokar, Karskar Jats belong to the Anu Branch. Thirty thousand Baluchis in Makran were recognised as Jats. Baluchis of the Lomri region are described as Jats in their chronicles. In the Rig-Veda, there are references to the Kabul River of Afghanistan, Gomal Valley, and rivers Ganga and Jamuna. There are also references to Kshatriya and the five branches of the Yayati Dynasty.


Ram Sarup Joon[8] writes that ....According to the research of Hem Chandra, Lichhavis belonged to Madrak dynasty and were called Karskar or Kakkar because of their origin from Kar. Shale, Shal, Shi, all originating from Sialkot are also Madrak. In Sanskrit Scripture they have been called Jatra or Jatrali meaning Jat.


Ram Sarup Joon[9] writes that ....Samudra Gupta conquered the whole of Punjab and a major part of India. The clans defeated by him included


Vayu Purana and Vishnu Purana have written Khokhars as Kokarkans (कोकरकंस), which became Karaskar. [10]

कारस्कर

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[11] ने लेख किया है ...कारस्कर (AS, p.172) - कारस्करों का वर्णन महाभारत कर्णपर्व 44,43 में इस प्रकार है-- 'कारस्करान् महिष्कान् कुरंडान् केरलास्तथा, कर्कॊटकान् वीरकांश्च दुर्धर्मांश च विवर्जयेत' यहां कारस्कर निवासियों का नाम उल्लेख विंध्य तथा दक्षिण भारत की- महाभारत कालीन- कई अनार्य जातियों के साथ किया गया है. श्री न.ला डे के मत में दक्षिण कनारा का कारकल ही कारस्कर है (देखें कारकल). महाभारत के समय कारस्करों को अनार्य आचरण वाली जातियों के अंतर्गत गिना जाता रहा होगा. बोधायन स्मृति 1,1,2 और मत्स्यपुराण 113 में भी कारस्करों का वर्णन है.

In Mahabharata

Karaskara (कारस्कर) Mahabharata (II.46.21),(VIII.30.45),


Karna Parva/Mahabharata Book VIII Chapter 30 mentions the tribes who are not followers of Brahmanism. Karaskara (कारस्कर) has mentioned this tribe in derogatory sense in Mahabharata verse (VIII.30.45). [12]....."The Karasakaras, the Mahishakas, the Kalingas, the Kikatas, the Atavis, the Karkotakas, the Virakas, and other peoples of no religion, one should always avoid."


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 46 describes game at dice and kings who were present in that assembly. Karaskara (कारस्कर) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.46.21). [13]....The Nipas, the Chitrakas, the Kukkuras, the Karaskaras, and the Lauha-janghas are living in the palace of Yudhishthira like bondsmen.
