Madhavpur (माधवपुर) is a village in - Tahsil of Porbandar District in Gujarat. It lies on the seashore, close to Porbandar.

Location

It lies on the seashore, close to Porbandar. It is located at 102 km from Rajkot, and 113 km from Porbandar. It is accessible by road from each of these places, by way of Veraval and Rajkot.

History

According to folklore, Krishna married Rukmini at Madhavpur after first kidnapping her. This event is memorialised with a temple dedicated to lord Madhavrai and by an annual fair held in the village.[1]

Madhavrai Temple

Madhavpur is the site for a 15th centuary temple of Madhavraiji who is a form of Lord Krishna. The original temple has been badly damaged by attacks by Muslim invaders, however a ruined structure is still present and gives idea of original undamaged temple. A newly constructed temple is used for worship now adjacent to the old one. [2]

A scenic town, Madhavpur is situated on a sandy coastile and is endowed with coconut trees and fertile agriculture land.It hosts the beautiful Madhavraiji Haveli Temple in addition to the Rukmini no choro, which marks the place where celebrated with an annual fair held by the Mer community. Nearby are the ruins of a Shiva temple, probably from the 12th c. The beach is not safe for swimming, but perfect for taking in the sea breeze.[3]

माधवपुर (AS, p.733) : कठियावाड़, गुजरात में पोरबंदर से 40 मील दूर छोटा सा बंदरगाह है. इस स्थान पर मलुमति नदी सागर में गिरती है. स्थानीय किंवदंती के अनुसार यहां रुक्मणी के पिता राजा भीष्म की राजधानी थी. माधवपुर में श्री कृष्ण और रुक्मणी के मंदिर भी हैं. किंतु जैसा कि महाभारत में स्पष्ट है भीष्म विदर्भ देश का राजा था और उसकी राजधानी कुंडिनपुर में थी.
