History

Kushinagar District Map

The Mallaraṭṭha or Mallārāṣṭra has been mentioned in the Aṅguttara Nikāya as one of the sixteen Mahājanapadas. The kingdom was divided into two parts which had for their capitals the cities of Kusāvati or Kusīnārā and Pāvā identical probably with Kasia (on the smaller Gandak and in the east of the Gorakhpur district) and a village named Padaraona (12 miles to the north-east of Kasia) respectively. Besides Kusīnārā, the Mallas had other important cities namely, Bhoganagara, Anupiya and Uruvelakappa in the neighbourhood of which there existed a wide forest called Mahāvana. [4][5]

V. S. Agrawala[6] writes that The free clan called the Glaukanikoi (identical with the Glauchukāyanakas of Kashika on Panini IV.3.99) whose country lay in the fertile and populous regions lying in the south of Kashmir (the Bhimber and Rajauri districts) between the upper courses of the Jhelum and Chenab and the Ravi River, had as many as 37 cities, the smallest of which contained not less than 5000 inhabitants and up to 10000. Strabo affirms that in the territories of nine nations situated between Jhelum and Beas, such as the Malloi, Oxydrakai and others, there were as many as 500 cities.

Sandhya Jain[7] writes about Malla (मल्ल) - Mentioned in 'geography' Mahabharata (VI.10.45) and in Bhima's conquest after northern Koshala (II.27.3). The Malla resided in district Deoria (UP) and had their metropolis at Kushinagar and Pava, sacred sites of the Bauddhas and the Jainas.

Jat History

They are Chandravanshi Jats. Malwa gets name after them. [8]They are mentioned in the Harivamsa and, as usual, a Mallāsura, (name of an Asura) is mentioned [9] Amarakosa defines Asura as Purvadeva i.e. a former god; obviously this must have been before the schism among the Aryans. [10] [11]

In Mahabharata

Malla (मल्ल) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.27.3), (II.27.11),(IV.1.9),(VI.10.45),

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 27 mentions the countries subjugated by Bhimasena. Mallas (मल्ल)are mentioned in Mahabharata (II.27.3) and (II.27.11).

Mahabharata (II.27.3) mentions Northern Mallas (Uttaramallas) (उत्तरमल्ल)[12]....Then the foremost of the sons of Pandu (Bhimasena), by performing feats excelling in fierceness, defeated the virtuous and mighty king Dirghayaghna of Ayodhya. And the exalted one then subjugated the country of Gopalakachchha and the Northern Mallas (Uttaramalla) (उत्तरमल्ल).
Mahabharata (II.27.11) mentions Southern Mallas (Dakshinamallas) (दक्षिणमल्ल)[13]....Then Bhima, with scarcely any degree of exertion and very soon, vanquished the Southern Mallas (Dakshinamallas) (दक्षिणमल्ल) and the Bhogavanta mountains.

Virata Parva, Mahabharata/ Book IV Chapter 1 mentions that Pandavas pass their days undiscovered in Viratanagara and its surrounding kingdoms. Malla (मल्ल) is mentioned in Mahabharata (IV.1.9). [14]....Still, for purposes of residence, I shall mention some spots that are both delightful and secluded. Do thou select some one of them. Surrounding the kingdom of the Kurus, are, many countries beautiful and abounding in corn, such as Panchala, Chedi, Matsya, Surasena, Pattachchara, Dasarna, Navarashtra, Malla, Shalva, Yugandhara, Saurashtra, Avanti, and the spacious Kuntirashtra

Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. Malla (मल्ल) is mentioned in Mahabharata (VI.10.45).[15]....the Mallas, the Sudeshnas, the Prahutas, the Mahishas, the Karshikas; the Vahikas, the Vatadhanas, the Abhiras, the Kalatoyakas;

In Ramayana

Mallabhumi (मल्लभूमि) Kingdom is mentioned in Uttara Kanda in Ramayana (7.102.9). [16]. Chandraketu, son of Lakshmana, founded city called Chandrakanta and became the king of Malla territory.[17]

In Rajatarangini

Rajatarangini[18] tells us....And when the stout Vijjaraja, hot with pride, struck Mallaka, he returned the blow, but both instantly fell on him. When the king appeared in view at the door of the four cornered room, Mallaka left his three antagonists and ran towards the king. At the time when the king was thus singled out, Kularaja ran swiftly in alarm and cut off the speed of Mallaka by cutting him in the bone of the buttocks. (p.208) (MallakaMalla)

Rajatarangini[19] tells us....Mallaraja had by queen Shveta three sons, Sahlana, &c, of whom the second had died before. Shamkharaja (Radda) had sought to kill the surviving Sahlana and Lothana and they fled in fear to the Navamatha. (p.32)

Rajatarangini[20] tells us....King Sussala shouted as he rode on his horse. When he was in the court-yard and had not yet seated himself on the throne, the voice of "Victory to Sussala," and the sound of drums were heard. In the family of Mallaraja, the, honor that was lost by Salhana and Lothana was won back again. Sussala embraced Salhana and Lothana who were on their horses, and clad in mail and addressed them both calling them as "boy" and "youth" and cunningly caused them to be disarmed. He then secured them and ordered them to be removed to another house. Thus he got the kingdom and entered the court. Salhana was captured after a reign of four months! minus three days, on the third day of bright moon in the month of Vaishakha of the year 88. (p.41)

Rajatarangini[21] tells...When the king Sussala learnt that Madava which had been to some extent pacified, had once more become disaffected, he again went to Vijayeshvara. The sons of Mallaraja (Sussala's father) created dangers for themselves by their evil tongue. ...Yashoraja who was from his boyhood used to flattering language became offended with the king for his harsh and insulting words. The vile Yashoraja was at Avantipura with a large army, and he thence marched and joined the enemy's party. On his going over to the enemies with the best part of the army, the king fled in distraction from Vijayakshetra. (VIII,p.97)

मल्ल (AS, p.717) = मल्लराष्ट्र.
