History

Ram Swarup Joon[9] writes In the Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 48, while describing various Kings who attended a ceremony in the Durbar (court) of Maharaja Yudhisthira, seventeen names are mentioned which are today found as Jat gotras. These are Malhia, Mylaw, Sindhar, Gandhar, Mahity, Mahe, Savi, Bath, Dharan, Virk, Dard, Shaly, Matash, Kukar (Khokar) Kak, Takshak, Sand, Bahik (Bathi) Bije (Bijenia), Andhra, Sorashtra (Rathi) Mann, Ar, Sohat, Kukat, Othiwal (Othval).

B S Dahiya[10] writes: The Vayu Purana mentions them as Maunika or Maun (Man) Vishnu Purana mentions them as Maunas, a tribe of Gandharvas, who annihilated the Nagas (Wilson's Edn.). They are the same as the English/German, Maan. Their coins have been found in Goa/ Konkan areas. Perhaps, they are the Mannai on the west of Caspian Sea, who in the eighth century B.C. had their kingdom, called Mannai, now Armenia (Ari-Man). They were under the overlordship of Tiglath Pileser IV and it was on their seat that Deioces Manda founded his empire.

Bhim Singh Dahiya identifies this clan with the Rigvedic Tribe - Mana: (RV 1/169/8, 171/5. 1/86/5, 117/11, Vlll/18/20). The last hymn mentions a king, named Manya Mana. They are to be identified with the Mana, Mannai of West Asian history. They were on the river Purusni (Ravi) at the time of Rigveda. That it is a warrior clan, is proved by the fact that it is not found in the Brahmanic Gotra list of Purshottam. [11]

Mann and Kahlon are mentioned in the Markandeya Purana together as Mana, Kalaha, Kohalakas (Kohlis) and Mandavyas (Mandas) [12] The original name is Kahl, the German Kohl. [13]

Mana (मान) and Hala (हाल) - Varahamihira mentions Mana and Hala together in his Brihat Samhita the name of a people [14] But these are two different clan names the Mana and the Hala / Hala . The Mana are separately mentioned as a people in Markandeya Purana and so are the Hala and their country in the North. [15] Mana was also supposed to be the name of Agastya’s father; and consequently his family is called Mana. [16] But it is doubtful, to say the least. Rig Veda mentions a Mana and also sons of Mana. (252-See SED, p. 793) [17] The Rig Veda/Mandala 1/Hymn 169 [18]shloka 8 mentions Mana as under:

"Give to the Manas, Indra with Maruts, gifts universal, gifts of cattle foremost.
Thou, God, art praised with Gods who must be lauded. May we find strengthening food in full abundance."

According to Thakur Deshraj [19]about 1500 years ago a group of these people came from Ghazni and settled at place called 'Balavansa' near Delhi. Maan clan descended from Maas Singh. His son Bijal Singh came to 'Dhosi' village and settled here. The village Dhosi is surrounded by hills and situated near Narnaul in Haryana. Large number of people come to this place from far off places every year. Many temples and kunds have been constructed here. A fair is also organized at this place.

Prior to the Maan people came, Gandas gotra Jats were the rulers here. Bijal Singh was married to Gaurandevi, daughter of Nagal. He founded a village called 'Gorir' in the name of Gaurandevi at a distance of 3 km from Dhosi.[20]

Roopram Singh was the chieftain of this clan after 20 generations of Bijal Singh. At the time of Roopram Singh, Shekhawats had occupied this province. Roopram Singh struggled for about 10 to 12 years in mid nineteenth century against Shekhawats of Khetri, but Maan people did not accept the rule of Shekhawats.[21]

In Alipur village in Delhi there is a shaheed park, managed and administered by MCD, there are 70 names written in the park. They were crushed to death by road roller by Britishers for revolting in 1857, they were all Jats and there clan name was Mann. There were only 70 family of Jats in this village that time and all who were above 18 years of Age were crushed to death by road roller in 1857. After this incidence, the Britishers made a permanent stay in the village and set up a choki/thana to curb the Jats.

The Govindpur inscription of 1137 refers to a rule of Maan and Rudar Kings in Gaya Bihar.[22][23]

Ram Swarup Joon[24] writes that Chhillar and Chhikhara Both these gotras are related to each other and to Dalal and Deshwal gotras too. The Chhillar gotra is found in the Punjab. It appears that Chhail and Chhilar are one and the same gotra. Near Bahadurgarh in district Rohtak (Haryana) they have a few villages in a compact area. They are considered to be the descendants of Mann.

Ram Swarup Joon[25] writes about Sihag, Mann: People belonging to these gotras in Haryana claim common descent with Deshwals and Dalals. For about 30 generations they have looked upon Dhana Rao Rathor as their forefather. But Sihags and Manns of Western Punjab are not aware of their association with Deshwals and Dalals. They consider themselves to be the brethren of the Heir and Bhuller gotras.

The Sihags are mentioned in the Puranas and the Mahabharat. A Sihag king offered a gift to Yudhisthira on his coronation. Thousands of years ago Heir, Bhuller and Sihag lived in Iran and Turkistan.

Kot Khokhar in Mewar has been the capital of the Sihag rulers. Pahulkot has also been their capital. Some names of these Sihag rulers were Vir Rana, Dhir Rana etc. They are mentioned in the manuscript of genealogical tables in the possession of Gorakh Singh.

Sihags are found in a large number in Bikaner, Bahawalpur and in Haryana 25 villages are inhabited by them in one compact group in district Rohtak.

The Mann gotra is found more among the Sikhs than the Hindu Jats. According to the Census report of 1911 their number was 42 000 in number of among the in district

Hoshiarpur and Jullundur districts. The Mann chiefs had secured a high position and respect in the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (Punjab).

Bhaga and Mugul Chik were two prominent Mann chiefs.

Ram Sarup Joon[26] writes about The Mann Chiefs Of Bhaga: Chaudhary Amar Singh Mann, resident of Bhaga joined the Kanhaiya Misal and annexed the Pargana, of Sokalgarh, Sujanpur, Dharmakot and Behrampur.

Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) vol. XXIII, Pt. 1, PP 47-55)।

(Epigraphica Indica (एपिग्राफिका इंडिका) Vol. II P. 333 Sl. No. 1105)।
