Mandleshwar (मंडलेश्वर) is a town in Khargone district in Madhya Pradesh.

Location

It is situated on the banks of Narmada River, 8 km east of Maheshwar, and 99 km south of Indore. Mandleshwar is located at 22.18°N 75.67°E. Mandleshwar can be reached by road from Indore, Dhamnod, Omkareshwar, Barwah, and Khargone and direct bus services are also available from Ujjain and Indore.

History

There are old temples, including Gupteshwar Mahadev mandir Chhappan-Dev, Shree Ram Temple, Shree Datta Temple, Ganga-Zira, and Kashi Vishweshwar Temple. Vasudevanand Sarswati (a saint) lived here for a long period. Dhawal-kunda (island in river), Hathani (Island in river), Sahastradhra, Ramkund are some other places of historical importance. It is said that Swami Vivekanand lived here for some days when he was going to Raipur.

Marks of British time are present such as SDM, DSP Office, fort, and the ghat. It was also the headquarters of the Nimar Agency and cantonment under the British from 1819 to 1864. It fell to the Marathas in the 18th century and in 1740 was granted by Malhar Rao Holkar to a Brahman, Vyankatram Shastri. In 1823 it became the headquarters of the District of Nimar, which until 1864 was managed by the agent to the governor general at Indore.

Mandleshwar is 8 km from Maheshwar, which was the capital of Holkar states. Mandleshwar in Central India is on the bank of the Narmada River at a narrow point where, during the monsoon, the stream often rises 60 feet above its normal level.

The Narmada is one of the most holy rivers of India and at Mandleshwar there are tanks temples and ghats. 'Mandleshwar' has a flight of 123 steps leading down to the river and expanding below into a wide ghat. This ghat is called as Ram Ghat, where temples including Ram Temple, Hanuman Temple and Dattatraya Temple and Ratneshwar Temple are located. The Ram Temple was built 75 years ago at Hanuman Gadhi in Mandleshwar. There is Maheshwar Dam to produce 400 MW electricity promoted by S. Kumars under the company Shree Maheshwar Hydel Power Corporation Limited, there is approx. 1 km long bridge across Narmada river. Vinoba Bhave, the advocate of nonviolence and human rights, also came here during his Bhudan Yatra. Indira Gandhi visited here in 1971 to inaugurate the water supply system plant run by the Public Health Engineering Department and the government of Madhya Pradesh. The scholar and vidvana Mandan Mishra lived in the town and had a debate with Adi Shankarsacharya; the Gupteshwar mahadev Temple where this debate took place remains. Chhappan-Dev, Ganga-Zira, Dhawal-kunda, Hathani, Shstradhra, Ramkund are some other historical places of town. There is a Datta Temple in the town where every year on the 28 April the Abhishek Pooja is done in the name of Albert Einstein, and once a year in the name of Lenin. The town also has a Ram Mandir established in the name of Brahmachaitanya Maharaj Gondwalekar.

मंडलेश्वर

मण्डलेश्वर (AS, p.684): प्राचीन माहिष्मती (=महेश्वर, मध्य प्रदेश) के निकट एक कस्बा है जो किवदंती में मंडन मिश्र का निवास स्थान माना जाता है. मंडन मिश्र और उनकी पत्नी भारती ने जगद्गुरु शंकराचार्य से शास्त्रार्थ किया था. शंकर दिग्विजय में उन्हें माहिष्मती का निवासी कहा गया है. (देखें महिष्मति). [1]

माहिष्मती

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[2] ने लेख किया है ...माहिष्मती (AS, p.742): महेश्वर को प्राचीन समय में 'माहिष्मती' (पाली 'माहिस्सती') कहा जाता था। तब माहिष्मति चेदि जनपद की राजधानी हुआ करती थी, जो नर्मदा नदी के तट पर स्थित थी। महाभारत के समय यहाँ राजा नील का राज्य था, जिसे सहदेव ने युद्ध में परास्त किया था- 'ततो रत्नान्युपादाय पुरीं माहिष्मतीं ययौ। तत्र नीलेन राज्ञा स चक्रे युद्धं नरर्षभ:।' (महाभारत, सभापर्व 32,21) (II.28.11)

राजा नील महाभारत के युद्ध में कौरवों की ओर से लड़ता हुआ मारा गया था। बौद्ध साहित्य में माहिष्मति को दक्षिण अवंति जनपद का मुख्य नगर बताया गया है। बुद्ध काल में यह नगरी समृद्धिशाली थी तथा व्यापारिक केंद्र के रूप में विख्यात थी। तत्पश्चात् उज्जयिनी की प्रतिष्ठा बढ़ने के साथ-साथ इस नगरी का गौरव कम होता गया। फिर भी गुप्त काल में 5वीं शती तक माहिष्मति का बराबर उल्लेख मिलता है। कालिदास ने 'रघुवंश' (6,43) में इंदुमती के स्वयंवर के प्रसंग में नर्मदा तट पर स्थित माहिष्मति का वर्णन किया है और यहाँ के राजा का नाम 'प्रतीप' [पृ.743]: बताया है- 'अस्यांकलक्ष्मीभवदीर्घबाहो माहिष्मतीवप्रनितंबकांचीम् प्रासाद-जालैर्जलवेणि रम्यां रेवा यदि प्रेक्षितुमस्तिकाम:।'

इस उल्लेख में माहिष्मति नगरी के परकोटे के नीचे कांची या मेकला की भांति सुशोभित नर्मदा का सुंदर वर्णन है. माहिष्मती नरेश को कालिदास ने अनूपराज भी कहा है (रघुवंश 6,37) जिससे ज्ञात होता है कि कालिदास के समय में माहिष्मती का प्रदेश नर्मदा के तट के निकट होने के कारण अनूप (जल के निकट स्थित) कहलाता था. पौराणिक कथाओं में माहिष्मती को हैहयवंशीय कार्तवीर्यार्जुन अथवा सहस्त्रबाहु की राजधानी बताया गया है. किंवदंती है कि इसने अपनी सहस्त्र भुजाओं से नर्मदा का प्रवाह रोक दिया था.

चीनी यात्री युवानच्वाङ्ग, 640 ई. के लगभग इस स्थान पर आया था. उसके लेख के अनुसार उस समय महिष्मति में एक ब्राह्मण राजा राज्य करता था. अनुश्रुति है कि शंकराचार्य से शास्त्रार्थ करने के वाले मंडन मिश्र तथा उनकी पत्नी भारती महिष्मति के ही निवासी थे. कहा जाता है कि महेश्वर के निकट मंडलेश्वर नामक बस्ती मंडन मिश्र के नाम पर ही विख्यात है. महिष्मति में मंडन मिश्र के समय संस्कृत विद्या का अभूतपूर्व केंद्र था.

महेश्वर में इंदौर की महारानी अहिल्याबाई ने नर्मदा के तट पर अनेक घाट बनवाए थे जो आज भी वर्तमान हैं. यह धर्मप्राण रानी 1767 के पश्चात इंदौर छोड़कर इसी पवित्र स्थल पर रहने लगी थी. नर्मदा के तट पर अहिल्याबाई होलकर नरेशों की छतरियां बनी हैं. ये वास्तुकला की दृष्टि से प्राचीन हिंदू मंदिरों के स्थापत्य की अनुकृति हैं. भूतपूर्व इंदौर रियासत की आद्य राजधानी यहीं थी.

एक पौराणिक अनुश्रुति में कहा गया है कि माहिष्मती का बसाने वाला महिष्मान् नामक चंद्रवंशी नरेश था. सहस्त्रबाहु इन्ही के वंश में हुआ था. महेश्वरी नामक नदी जो माहिष्मती अथवा महिष्मान् के नाम पर प्रसिद्ध है, महेश्वर से कुछ ही दूर पर नर्मदा में मिलती है. हरिवंश पुराण (7,19) की टीका में नीलकंठ ने माहिष्मती की स्थिति विंध्य और रिक्ष-पर्वतों के बीच में विंध्य के उत्तर में, रिक्ष के दक्षिण में बताई है.
