Bhim Singh Dahiya[12] writes with reference to Heornle and Cunningham that Harshavardhana belonged to this clan. He is connected with Shrimalpur which is a village on the border of Hoshiarpur and Jullundhar districts in Punjab and is nowadays called Māhalpur. Even today it is inhabited by Bains clan of Jats. [13] They are mentioned in Mahabharata along with Khatkal, Karaskar, Mahishaka, Karkana and Viraka, by their Sanskrit name Mahisha which becomes or Bhains or Bains in Indian languages of english word buffalo. [14] Bains is one of 36 royal clans in India along with Salar, Dahima etc.

Identical or Similar South Asian Jat and Western Clan Names

Prof. B.S. Dhillon [15] writes ....There are numerous identical or similar South Asian Jat and Western clan names. This selection presents only a sample of them. The Western clan names were mostly selected from the Ottawa Telephone Directory. A sample of the south Asian Jat and the Western equivalent clan names is as follows (the equivalent western clan name is given in the parentheses):

Bains (Bain, Baines or Vance)

Baines is a surname of English, Scottish or Welsh origin. It shares many of the same roots with the British surname Bains.[16][17] It shares some roots with the British surname Bain.[18]

Derivation and variants: Baines has a number of different sources, several of them nicknames and another based on an occupation. In Scotland and the north of England the Old English word bān ('bone') became Middle English bān and bain. It may have become a nickname in the plural, meaning 'bones' or '[long-]legs' (cf. modern German Bein, also meaning both "bone" and "leg").[19] The Middle English bayn, beyn and the Old Norse beinn meant 'straight' or 'direct', which may have become a nickname.[20] The Middle English bayne (and French bain) meant 'bath'. This may have become an occupational surname for an attendant at a public bath.[21]

Baines may also have Welsh roots, from the patronymic ab Einws ('son of Einws'). Einws is a shortened version of the Welsh name Ennion, meaning 'Anvil'.[22]

Variants of the surname Baines include Bains, Banes, Baynes and Bayns.[23][24]
