Ram Ram to all

I'm currently doing Masters in Electrical Engineering at University of Texas at Arlington, where Kalpana Chawla did her Aeronautical Engineering from, majoring in Wireless Communication. I'm in my final semester now and would be graduating soon.
The reason I'm starting this thread is to help others who decide to further their studies here in the US. I know the dilemna prospective students face when they decide to come to the US. There's hardly anybody who they can look at for advice. I think being here in the US I can be of immense help to my Jat Bhai Behens.
So please feel free to ask me for anything if u have any queries.

Being thousands of miles away from my land, i feel an extra responsibilty to do something for my people and my land. I always used to wonder why these NRIs try to do so much when even the people in the land are not bothered but the mystery has begun to unravel. Its because of the pain of being so far away from Matrubhumi that drives the urge to do wotever one can.
I've been doing and will always do wotever I can for my people and my land and hope that one day ours will be the most prosperous and most profcient land.

Sangwan bhai, Its really nice thread. Having a conseller or guide in the process of applying abroad can be really helpful for aspiring students... People on this website has done a lot e.g. Dr. Birbal Singh. There no dearth of people willing to help but there lack of network between potential helpers and applicants... there was some enthu to make a yahoo group to connect mentors and aspirants, but it became as dormant as Mauna Kea volcano:-))...

If anybody thinks he can wake up people, he is challenged to join
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jat_grads/
(BTW we also had http://www.orkut.com/Community.aspx?cmm=3231248 )

I guess a lot cud be done on Jatland... but it needs proper distribution of task of guidance becuz one person can't guide ten at a time...

2-3 people have already showed desire to contact, so lets start with that... Guidance in these matters can be handled thru personal correspondences only, becuz its time consuming process and is very specific to the applicant...

So should we make list of people who are willing to help and each of these can talk to 1-2 student thru mails...

Lets' start with 2 sangwans, Pardeep and Vinod.. please add your name to the list... More ideas are welcome regarding how to help more and more needy students...

Veenu, if you are serious then this can't be done in forums... there are details involved that are specific to your interest, resume blah blah blah... if you are seriously looking for guidance and are in process of applying contact either Pardeep or me...

Thats good... one more Jat physicist... The procedure is almost similar to engr application excpet that physics guys have to take subjective GRE too... Ranks of univs are available in usnews.com... but don't go by that... depends a lot on specific field... basically ask him to contact me.. vinodks@gmail.com

Dear Jatlanders
I think a post describing all the aspects of studying abroad is long overdue since a lot of us are aspiring to study abroad. I can give a fineprint of how to go about getting to the US for higher studies.

1. Planning
Planning early helps a lot in terms of saving time and efforts. The best time for a student to start planning if he/she wants to study abroad for MS program is the 3rd Year of your undergraduate studies. Start planning as soon as you're in your 3rd year and then work your way up as I'll describe in the following section so that you're ready to join a university abroad as soon as you finish your undergraduation.

1. Choosing your Field of Interest
This is the most important aspect to think of while planning to study abroad. This has to be done before you start working toward securing admission in any university. Given the vast technological areas to choose from, it can be a daunting task. But in 3 years of undergraduation, I think one can very definitely make out his interest and inclination towards the field.

2. GRE/GMAT
The first step on the ladder to higher education abroad is taking the GRE/GMAT. It's also the most important and crucial part of it. The best time according to me for students to take this test is during the summer break after the 3rd year. There's ample time in summer vacations and also it gives u enough time window (whole year) to apply and go through the admission procedure.Preparing for this test requires time and devotion. Although there're many books and reading material available, yet I'd suggest all the aspirants should join a coaching institute which gives specialised coaching for these tests. The reason I'm advocationg this is due to the personal experience I've had at one such institute. They help you focus on the areas where you lag and help you in the finer nuances of the test along with certain tips and tricks which might be hard to figure out ourselves. Those who can't afford to get specialised coaching (as its quite expensive), I'd suggest you start preparing even earlier. These tests can be taken more than once but there're some universities which take an average of the no. of test results, so its important to score well in the first go.

3. Choosing the Universities
This is perhaps the most daunting task of all in the process. There're certain criteria which should be kept in mind while finalising universities to apply to.
--- Ranking of the university
--- Financial consideration (the state and the tuition)
--- Recommendation of a Faculty
Ranking of a university is the most important criterion to be looked for, it helps your employment prospects after you graduate and also builds your credibility as a good student. Then comes the financial consideration. It is also a very important thing to be considered as higher studies in the US is an expensive affair. The cost of living in the US varies greatly in different states e.g Texas is far cheaper than California. So these things should be kept in mind before making a final decision. Also if you somehow get the recommendation of a faculty in some university that boosts your acceptance chances manifold as faculty in the US have a concrete say in the affair of the school.

4. Application Procedure
After the above mentioned steps have been completed then comes the most complicated part. I say complicated because a lot of paperwork needs to be sent to the university. The first thing to do here is to make a file and make a copy every document that you send and put it in your file. This helps in organising everything as it can be very confusing when you're applying to a no. of universities.
There are very coherent instructions of every universities regarding the documents that they need, which usually are:
-- Copy of your Xth and XIIth marksheets
-- Copy of your Bachelor's degree marksheets
-- Official GRE/GMAT/TOEFL scores
-- Financial Documents
-- Statement of Purpose
-- Recommendations
So get your documents ready and organised and be ready to send them via registered post or courier. Give the post office ample time as sometimes it takes more than 10 days for your mail to get through. Almost every university lets you create an account as soon as your application is approved for submission. You can use your account to track the progress of your application and also get to know if there's any lacking document that needs to be send.

5. Wait :D

6. Post Admission
After you've secured admission in some university, its time to try to get some form of funding if you've not already managed to get some. Go to
the universities website and get to know the faculty. Almost every university has the information of its faculty online and each individual has his/her own webpage where there's information about the project/research he/she is undertaking. Find someone from your area of interest and write to him/her asking to take you under his guidance. Pretty much everybody needs student to carry their research further. If he/she doesnt seem enthusiastic about giving some kind of funding, volunteer to work for free for some time. Usually after a semester of volunteering u stand a good chance of getting funding.

I think this is practically all you need to do to get into a university in the US. Please let me know if I missed something. If I remember anything that I missed, I'll edit it. I hope this is helpful information.

Last year, he quailified for his admission in Shiefield University, but in the absence of scholarship, got his admission deferred. THis time also he could not manage for the scholarship. He has spent 2.5 yrs in PHD.

Could you please advise as to how he should initiate for a bright career and how can he compensate for this scholarship

Hi Anjana
I think its rather unfortnatethat he couldn't get any funding though his credentials look excellent. My advice is to get in touch with some faculty there and talk to them about it. With his experience I'm sure anybody would want him as a student. Talk to them and tell them your incapability to pursure education in US without funding, I'm sure they'd definitely help you out. Its rather easy to get funding at the doctoral level.
Wish you all the best....

Hi Deepti
Sorry for the delayed reply. I'm glad to know about your determination to do "something", but I think its more important for you to figure out what that something is. A good idea would be to ask yourself, "where do I wanna be 5-10 years down the line (professionally)?", and then start working towards it.
As far as doing MS is concerned, US is the ultimate destination for a no. or reasons. It offers education which is at par with any best institute in the world ad its not that difficult to secure admission. See my earlier post regarding what you need to do to secure admission in any of the schools here.
let me know if I can be of any further help.
Cheers

I'm sorry I have no idea about that but let me suggest u a solution. There're some schools which accept 10+2+3 but their crdebility is an issue.
Work experience depends on wot kinda school u r applying to. There's no set parameter on that. Your overall acceptance rate depends on a no. of parameters like ur education, GMAT score, work experience, academics etc. etc.
So its really difficult to comment on either of ur questions. Wot I'll suggest to u is to go to a consultant like Jamboree. These ppl have a huge databases of wot schools look for wot're ur chances in a particular school. they might also suggest u a school depending on ur credentials.
Let me know if u need some further info.

Hi Sushil
I don't know what your job profile is but if you're a RF Engineer you can definitely get a job here but the problem is Visa. The best solution I can think of is contacting some consultant here in the US and see if they can arrange a Visa for you. What you can do is strike a deal with them and work for minimum wages for a couple of months because all they care about is making money. I'm also in the wireless industry and can tell you that there's a lot of work here in this field but the only poblem you're gonna face is Visa. Alternatively, you ca enroll in some program here and after that it'll not be a problem at all.
Let me know if you need to know something else.

I really don't have much idea about Hotel Management but I think the safest bet for you would be to go to a consultant there in India and go about it from there. I know for sure that some consultants like Jamboree have a huge database of schools in the US and can help in you in choosing one based on your preference in terms of tuition, place, ranking et al.
Do let me know if you need the address for Jamboree in delhi.
